In recent railway projects where the railway connects between cities, newly planned tunnels are often located close to, or beneath an existing tunnel. Many claims and petitions have voiced public concern about the vibration and noise resulting from the situation. Vibrations and noises are engineering issues as well as environmental problems, and have become more important as people have become more concerned with their the quality of life. However, it is unlikely that the effects of vibration in situations where trains simultaneously pass a multileveled tunnel crossing have been appropriately considered in the phase of planning and design. This study investigates the superposition characteristic of ground-born vibrations from a multileveled tunnel crossing. The results from model tests and numerical analysis show that the ground-born vibration can be amplified by a maximum of about 30% compared to that resulting from the existing single tunnel. Numerical parametric study has also shown that the vibration amplification effect increases as the ground stiffness, the tunnel depth, and the distance between tunnels decrease.

The fishing boat propulsion system employing the modified stern shape and the tunnel to protect a propeller is developed to increase the cruise speed and reduce he problem resulting from the open propeller accidentally catching the waste net and able on the sea. Using 3 different tunnel types, the model test was performed in the circular water channel and the panel method based on the potential theory is applied to analyze the open water performance of the propeller. In the numerical analysis using he potential-based panel method, it calculates the hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and the tunnel and evaluates the effect of the tunnel geometry. From the numerical and experimental results differing tunnel geometries, the propulsion efficiency is increased by the larger diameter of the inlet than the outlet of the tunnel and the smaller gap between the propeller tip and the tunnel internal surface. These results provide the information of the propeller system with the tunnel and the hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and the tunnel.

The Korean Tilting Train eXpress may produced a strong micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit because of large train/tunnel area ration of conventional railways. This micro-pressure wave causes an impulsive noise which is a serious environmental noise pollution near tunnel exit. Tunnel hood can be the method of reducing the micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit. Therefore, parametric studies for tunnel hood are performed with respect to the hood length and size to investigate the effects of the tunnel hood. Also, axi-symmetric unsteady compressible flow solver was used to analyze train-tunnel relative motion. According to the result of numerical analysis, the maximum micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit is reduced by 56% throughout the hood establishment on conventional railways.
The jet fan is generally used to add thrust in the longitudinal ventilation system of road tunnel and the geometric conditions of jet fan such as the distance from tunnel wall have an effect on the performance of ventilation system. Numerical analyses on the flow in tunnel caused by operation of jet fan are presented to study the ventilation characteristics in tunnel. While the distance between jet fans in parallel installed in tunnel is changed 0.5 L/D to 3.0 L/D, the flowrate and mean velocity through tunnel are calculated for each cases. As the distance between jet fans increases, the flowrate through tunnel increases asymptotically and the momentum of tunnel flow is alike.
In present study, the effect of tunnel excavation on groundwater was investigated by a case study and numerical analysis. The case study revealed that groundwater can be one of environmental impacts resulting from tunnel excavation. To examine variations in groundwater level due to tunnel excavation, numerical analysis was performed. The analysis result indicated that tunnel excavation could affect the groundwater behavior as the groundwater adjacent to tunnel flows in it. Also, it was found that, for the case where groundwater flowing though fractured zone passes tunnel exacvation area, a special care with the excavation would be needed to avoid any tunnel instability due to a large qunatity of goundwater flowing in it.

Seismic assessment of underground structures is one of the challenging problems in engineering design. This is because there are usually many sources of uncertainties in rocks and probable earthquake characteristics. Therefore, for decreasing of the uncertainties, seismic response of underground structures should be evaluated by sufficient number of earthquake records which is scarcely possible in common seismic assessment of underground structures. In the present study, a practical risk-based approach was performed for seismic risk assessment of an unsupported tunnel. For this purpose, Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) was used to evaluate the seismic response of a tunnel in south-west railway of Iran and different analyses were conducted using 15 real records of earthquakes which were chosen from the PEER ground motion database. All of the selected records were scaled to different intensity levels (PGA=0.1-1.7 g) and applied to the numerical models. Based on the numerical modeling results, seismic fragility curves of the tunnel under study were derived from the IDA curves. In the next, seismic risk curve of the tunnel were determined by convolving the hazard and fragility curves. On the basis of the tunnel fragility curves, an earthquake with PGA equal to 0.35 g may lead to severe damage or collapse of the tunnel with only 3% probability and the probability of moderate damage to the tunnel is 12%.

A 2-dimensional $k-{\varepsilon}$ numerical model was developed to explore the effects of vehicle movement, jet fan and wind speed for the ventilation of road tunnels. To consider the temperature distribution in the tunnel, the energy equation was solved with a source term of the energy exhausted from vehicles. Although the tunnel ventilation can be made by the piston effect of vehicle movement, an additional ventilation is necessary when a head wind is existing. Jet fans may assist the air flow in the tunnel. However, more efficient ventilation system should be necessary, because the exhaust gas from vehicles flow along the road surface and it cannot be diffused in the longitudinal tunnel.
This paper aims to estimate the range of the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) formation caused by the tunnel boring machine (TBM) advancement through dynamic three-dimensional large deformation finite element analysis. Large deformation analysis based on Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) analysis is used to accurately simulate the behavior during TBM excavation. The analysis model is verified based on numerous test results reported in the literature. The range of the formed EDZ will be suggested as a boundary under various conditions - different tunnel diameter, tunnel depth, and rock type. Moreover, evaluation of the integrity of the tunnel structure during excavation has been carried out. Based on the numerical results, the apparent boundary of the EDZ is shown to within the range of 0.7D (D: tunnel diameter) around the excavation surface. Through series of numerical computation, it is clear that for the rock of with higher rock mass rating (RMR) grade (close to 1st grade), the EDZ around the tunnel tends to increase. The size of the EDZ is found to be direct proportional to the tunnel diameter, whereas the depth of the tunnel is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the EDZ. However, the relationship between the formation of the EDZ and the stability of the tunnel was not found to be consistent. In case where the TBM excavation is carried out in hard rock or rock under high confinement (excavation under greater depth), large range of the EDZ may be formed, but less strain occurs along the excavation surface during excavation and is found to be more stable.

A case study deals with Squeezing behavior under tunneling. Squeezing stands for large time-dependent convergence during tunnel excavation. Squeezing can occur in both rock and soil as long as the particular combination of induced stresses and material properties pushes some zone around the tunnel beyond the limiting shear stress at which creep starts. Under squeezing rock conditions, If the support installation is delayed the rock mass moves into the tunnel and a stress redistribution takes place around it. On the contrary, if deformation is restrained, squeezing will lead to long-term load build-up of rock support. This paper shows analysis case mutually with monitoring and numerical analysis result of squeezing behavior of Pinglin tunnel in Taiwan.

In case of an urban tunnel, the displacement of ground base controls the tunnel design because it is built on shallow and unconsolidated ground many times. There are more insufficiency to describe the ground movement which coincides in the measured result of the situ because the design of an urban tunnel is dependent on the method of numerical analysis used to the existing elastic and elasto-plastic models. We studied about the prediction for the ground movement of a shallow tunnel in unconsolidated ground, mechanism of collapse, and settlement. Also this paper shows comparison with the existing elastic and elasto-plastic model using the unlinear analysis of the strain-softening model. We can model the real ground movement as the increasement of ground surface inclination or occurrence of shear band by using strain-softening model for the result of ground movement of an urban NATM tunnel.
