  • As the building is becomes bigger and larger, it can lead to big damage in case of fire. Also, tunnel, machine room and underground joint are spaces that can cause high temperature fire above 1,350℃ in case of fire. Therefore, a refractory material is need that can be withstand in high temperatures for long time. One side, the composition of oyster shell is CaCO3 of 90% or more. It is expected that it will be possible to use it as a high calcium natural material which is the material of the refractory board.   • In this study, experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of ventilation equipment in underground fires. Two type of Ventilators were used in experiments. Experiments were carried out using ethanol square pool fire. Maximum heat release rate was about 460kW. Visibility and temperature distribution were evaluated according to mechanical ventilation. In blower type ventilation, visibility was increased and temperature was lowered.

  • 도로터널에서의 미분무수 소화시스템의 적용 가능성을 검토하기 위해 실물 화재 실험을 수행하였다. 적용된 화원은 실물 승용차 화재와 유류화재를 모사한 화원면적 $1.4m^2$의 heptane pool 화재이며, 기존 도로터널에 설치된 저압 물분무 시스템과 고압 미분부수 소화시스템과의 냉각효과 비교실험을 수행하였다. 도로터널 내의 환기조건을 구현하기 위해 실물모형 터널의 한 편에 터널 유속(0.9~3.8 m/sec 범위) 발생장치를 설치하였으며, 화원에서 하류 방향으로 터널 내 온도분포를 측정하였다. 실험 결과 1/5의 유량을 사용하는 고압 미분무수 소화시스템은 저압 물분무 시스템과 동등한 수준의 냉각효과를 보였다.

  • In a bid to avoid the economic loss resulting from traffic jam in urban area, a deep underground road at 40 m depth has been considered and the first class disaster prevention facilities shall be applied according to domestic guideline. Automatic-monitoring fire extinguishing system designed to use for fire fighting has been widely applied at home and abroad. Recently development and commercialization through theoretical and experimental research to apply to road/railroad sector have been underway. Based on such performance of automatic fire extinguishing system, technical/economic analysis of existing water spray systems was conducted and as a result, it has demonstrated the superiority in terms of fire suppression as well as in cost efficiency. Then to commercialize this system, more diverse studies that will incorporate the characteristics of domestic tunnels are needed and should the system be promoted through institutional improvement, it's expected to become one of the advanced nations with own original technology in a life safety system industry throughout the world.

A study on evacuation characteristic by cross-sectional areas and smoke control velocity at railway tunnel fire (철도터널 화재시 단면적별 제연풍속에 따른 대피특성 연구)

  • In this study, with variables the cross section area ($97m^2$, $58m^2$, $38m^2$) and the wind velocity(0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 m/s), the time of getting off train dependent on the way of itself and the width of the evacuation route was analyzed, and also fire and evacuation characteristics is reviewed by cross section area of each wind velocity. As the result, if cross section become smaller, the density of harmful gases in the tunnel increased more than the ratio of decreasing cross section area. In the case of small cross sectional area, the surrounding environment from initial fire is indicated to exceed the limit criteria suggested in performance based design. In the analysis of effective evacuation time for evacuation characteristics, the effective evacuation time was the shortest in the case of evaluating effective evacuation time by the visibility. Also, there was significant difference between the effective evacuation time on the basis of performance based evaluation and the effective evacuation time obtained by analyzing FED (Fractional effective dose), one of the analysis method obtaining the point that deaths occur, against harmful gases.

  • The reduced scale fire test provides basic data but it is not enough to analysis real fire problem directly because there is no exact analogy theory between a real fire and the reduced scale model. Therefore we have developed the large scale calorimeter in order to the real scale fire test. This advanced large scale calorimeter used for physical properties such as a heat release rate, based upon consumption of $O_2$ method. Using this large scale calorimeter, we cameo out the real scale vehicle fire test in order to evaluation for heat release rate. We obtained the calculated result for HRR $2.3{\sim}3.4\;MW$ and this result is very similar to the PIARC candidate HRR. It is approve that this facility has the reliability and it is capable of applying to the advance fire research in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the effects of the number of users and their spatial distribution on the evacuation time in a road tunnel in the event of a fire. An agent-based evacuation model was implemented using Netlogo following the ODD protocol. The proposed model illustrates how the evacuation behavior of one can hinder others across different evacuation environments. Simulations show that evacuation time increases with the number of users when they are randomly located in a road tunnel.

  • This paper presents the applicability of NATM Composite Lining method in domestic tunnel construction sites. Firstly, in order to produce high quality PC Panel, optimal steam curing condition is reviewed. And in preparation for fire inside the tunnel, the fire-resistance test of PC Panel is carried out. The constructability of NATM Composite Lining method and the drainage ability of light-weight foamed mortar is also evaluated through field construction test. And PC Panel combination program is developed to calculate the quantity of PC Panel efficiently. Besides, economic evaluation for NATM Composite Lining method is conducted. From this research, it is clearly found that NATM Composite Lining method is applicable to domestic tunnel construction site.

  • Force induced by the natural ventilation in tunnel is likely to generate adverse influences on the airflow during the normal operation and create even more unfavorable circumstances during the tunnel fire. The influence of the natural ventilation is required to take into account in designing and operating the ventilation as well as safety systems. The magnitude of natural ventilation force depends on a variety of factors associated with the topographical, meteorological and physical features of tunnel. Unfortunately, at this moment those are difficult to quantify and none of the countries has suggested its estimation method in the design guideline. This study aims at quantifying the natural ventilation force at a local highway tunnel by three different methods. The first method employes direct measurement of the pressure at portals, while the second applies a stepwise approach to eliminate the piston effect ahead of deriving the natural ventilation force and the third method uses the concept of barometric barrier.
