Hydrogen Production Using Membrane Reactors

  • Methane steam reforming (MSR) reaction for hydrogen production was studied in a membrane reactor (MR) using two tubular membranes, one Pd-based and one of porous alumina. A higher methane conversion than the thermodynamic equilibrium for a traditional reactor (TR) was achieved using MRs. The experimental temperature range was 350-500$^{\circ}C$; no sweep-gas was employed during reaction tests to avoid its back-permeation through the membrane and the steam/methane molar feed ratio (m) varied in the range 3.5-5.9. The best results (the difference between the MR conversion and the thermodynamic equilibrium was of about 7%) were achieved with the alumina membrane, working with the highest steam/methane ratio and at 450$^{\circ}C$. Silica membranes prepared at KRICT laboratories were characterized with permeation tests on single gases (N$_2$, H$_2$ and CH$_4$). These membranes are suited for H$_2$ separation at high temperature.

  • 본 연구는 $TiO_2$ 광촉매 및 응집-여과-중화공정을 거친 아크릴폐수를 UF(tubular)/RO(spiral wound)공정에 적용하여 적용압력과 온도변화에 따른 성능변화를 고찰하였다. 한외여과 관형모듈에서 광촉매 전처리수와 응집-여과-중화 전처리수의 COD, T-N은 온도 및 압력변화에 크게 영향을 받지 않고, 제거효율도 낮은 것으로 확인할 수 있었다. TDS 및 turbidity의 경우 한외여과 관형 모듈에서 광촉매 전처리수가 응집-여과-중화공정의 처리수에 비해 처리효율이 우수함을 확인하였다. T-N, TDS는 역삼투막 공정에서 우수한 제거효율을 나타내었다.

  • 본 연구에서는 Si 미립자를 함유한 반도체 세정폐수의 관형막을 이용한 한외여과특성을 검토하였다. 관형막의 시간변화에 따른 투과유속의 감소현상은 막표면에 형성된 케익층의 증가 및 기공막힘에 기인하며, cross flow는 케익여과에 의한 막오염 형태를 보였으나 dead-end flow는 기공막힘과 케익여과에 의한 혼합형태를 보였다. Cross Flow의 케익저항의 크기는 3.16$\times$$10^{12}$ ~4.34$\times$$10^{12}$ $m^{-1}$ 였고, dead-end flow 는 6.6 $\times$$10^{12}$ ~12.19$\times$$10^{12}$ $m^{-1}$였다. 운전초기의 흐름형태에 따른 투과유속은 cross flow 가 dead-end flow 의 약 7 배였다. Cross flow 투과유속은 약 42 $\ell$/$m^2$ hr, 용질배제율은 약 96 % 였으며, 분리막공정을 거친 투과수 중의 Si 입자의 평균크기는 20nm였다.

  • This paper will begin by describing osmosis and how reverse osmosis works. It will show how osmotic pressure affects reverse osmosis operations. It uill explain salt rejection, membrane flux, and recovery rates and the affect that salt built up has on membrane performance. It wil 1 explain the limitations of RO performance and why pretreatment is important. It will describe the two basic types of membrane, asymmetric and thin-film composite and explain the difference between these types plus compare cellulose acetate types to aromatic polyamide type membranes. It will discuss operating efficiences as it compares to feedwater pressure, concentration, temperature and pH. Finally, it will discuss the differences between tubular, plate and frame, hollow fiber and spiral wound element design. It will be a paper that talks about the basics of RO systems and should give a person who is unfamiliar with RO a basic introduction to this type of separation technology.

  • 막 모듈의 종류에는 평판형(Plate and Frarne), 나권형(Spiral Wound), 중공사형(Hollow Fiber), 관형(Tubular) 등이 있다. 이 중에서 관형 모듈은 공업적 스케일의 한외여과 장치로써 그 특징은 공급액 유로가 일반적으로 커서 전처리를 행하지 않고도 막히는 것이 적으며, 또한 막 표면의 세정이 약품에 의한 것 이외에 스폰지 볼 등에 의한 물리적 세정이 가능한 것이 있으므로 공업용이나 폐액처리 등에 적용할 수 있다는 것이다.

Organotemplate-free synthesis of ZSM-5 membrane for pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol

  • ZSM-5 membrane was prepared on tubular macroporous ${\alpha}$-alumina support using a different synthesis route. The effects of organic template agent and Si/Al ratio of the synthesis gel on morphology, structure, and separation performance of the ZSM-5 membrane used for dehydration of isopropanol were investigated. High water perm-selectivity ZSM-5 membrane with a thickness of about $3.0{\mu}m$ and a low Si/Al ratio of 10.1 was successfully prepared from organotemplate-free synthesis gel with a molar composition of $SiO_2$ : $0.050Al_2O_3$ : $0.21Na_2O$ : NaF : $51.6H_2O$ at $175^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The ZSM-5 membrane exhibited high pervaporation performance with a flux of $3.92kg/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ and corresponding separation factor of higher than 10,000 for dehydration of 90 wt.% isopropanol/water mixture at $75^{\circ}C$.

  • The production of CO-free hydrogen streams for feeding PEM-Fuel Cells using catalytic zeolite membrane reactors was analysed by means of selective oxidation. Tubular FAU (Na-Y) zeolite membranes, prepared by a secondary growth method and Pt-loaded, were used in a flow-through MR configuration. The catalytic tests were carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ and at different pressures with a simulated dry reformate shifted gas mixture ($H_2$ ca. 60%, CO 1 %, plus $O_2,\;N_2,\;CO_2$). The operative $O_2/CO$ stoichiometric equivalent feed ratio was ${\lambda}= 2$. These catalytic tests, reducing the CO concentration down to $10{\sim}50$ ppm, verified the possibility of MR integration after using a low temperature water-gas shift unit of a fuel processor to convert hydrocarbons into hydrogen-rich gas.

Changes in Phosphate Transporter Activity Evaluated by Phosphonoformic Acid Binding in Cadmium-Exposed Renal Brush-Border Membranes

  • Direct exposure of renal tubular brush-border membranes (BBM) to free cadmium (Cd) causes a reduction in phosphate (Pi) transport capacity. Biochemical mechanism of this reduction was investigated in the present study. Renal proximal tubular brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) were isolated from rabbit kidney outer cortex by Mg precipitation method. Vesicles were exposed to $50{\sim}200\;{\mu}M\;CdCl_2$ for 30 min, then the phosphate transporter activity was determined. The range of Cd concentration employed in this study was comparable to that of the unbound Cd documented in renal cortical tissues of Cd-exposed animals at the time of onset of renal dysfunction. The rate of sodium-dependent phosphate transport $(Na^+-Pi\;cotransport)$ by BBMV was determined by $^{32}P-Iabeled$ inorganic phosphate uptake, and the number of $Na^+-Pi$ cotransporters in the BBM was assessed by Pi-protectable $^{14}C-labeled$ phosphonoformic acid $([^{14}C]PFA)$ binding. The exposure of BBMV to Cd decreased the $Na^+-Pi$ cotransport activity in proportion to the Cd concentration in the preincubation medium, but it showed no apparent effect on the Pi-protectable PFA binding. These results indicate that an interaction of renal BBM with free Cd induces a reduction in $Na^+-Pi$ cotransport activity without altering the carrier density in the membrane. This, in turn, suggest that the suppression of phosphate transport capacity $(V_{max})$ observed in Cd-treated renal BBM is due to a reduction in $Na^+-Pi$ translocation by existing carriers, possibly by Cd-induced fall in membrane fluidity.

  • 새로운 管形 PVC膜 질산이온 選擇性 電極을 제작하여 그 性能을 조사하였다. 電極膜의 組成을 5${\%}$ aliquat-NO$_3$ 용액+ 32${\%}$ poly(vinyl chloride) + 63${\%}$ dibutyl sebecate로 하였을 때 전극의 感應特性이 최적이었으며, 이 때의 감응기울기는 58.5 ${\pm}$ 0.1 mV/decade, 檢出限界는 0.02mM, 感應時間 (t$_{99}$)은 25초이었다. 이 전극을 써서 아질산이온을 連續${\cdot}$自動化法으로 정량하였다. Recipient 용액은 pH 7.6의 10$^{-2}$ M 燐酸鹽 緩衝溶液을 쓰고, 여기에 酸化劑로서 過酸化水素를 0.3${\%}$가 되도록 포함시켰다. 전극계의 最適條件에서 아질산이온 標集溶液 8.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-5}$ M ∼ 5.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-2}$ M의 범위에서 직선적인 감응을 나타내었으며, 이 때의 감응기울기는 56.8 ${\pm}$ 0.2 mV/decade이었다.

Membrane Bioreactor를 이용한 폭발성 물질의 가수분해 부산물의 탈질과정에의 적용 (Application of a Membrane Bioreactor in Denitrification of Explosives Hydrolysates)

  • A bench-scale anoxic membrane bioreactor (MBR) system, consisting of a bioreactor coupled to a ceramic crossflow ultrafiltration module, was evaluated to treat a synthetic wastewater containing alkaline hydrolysis byproducts (hydrolysates) of RDX, The wastewater was formulated the same as RDX hydrolysates, and consisted of acetate, formate, formaldehyde as carbon sources and nitrite, nitrate as electron accepters. The MBR system removed 80 to 90% of these carbon sources, and approximately 90% of the stoichiometric amount of nitrate, 60% of nitrite. The reactor was also operated over a range of transmembrane pressures, temperatures, suspended solids concentration, and organic loading rate in order to maximize treatment efficiency and permeate flux. Increasing transmembrane pressure and temperature did not improve membrane flux significantly. Increasing biomass concentration in the bioreactor decreased the permeate flux significantly. The maximum volumetric organic loading rate was $0.72kg\;COD/m^3/day$, and the maximum F/M ratio was 0.50 kg N/kg MLSS/day and 1.82 kg COD/kg MLSS/day. Membrane permeate was clear and essentially free of bacteria, as indicated by heterotrophic plate count. Permeate flux ranged between 0.15 and $2.0m^3/m^2/day$ and was maintained by routine backwashing every 3 to 4 day. Backwashing with 2% NaOCl solution every fourth or fifth backwashing cycle was able to restore membrane flux to its original value.
