  • Collapse characteristics of thin-walled hatted section tubes are investigated. The square section members with flanges are substituted by the equivalent rectangular tube. The stiffening effects of flanges are transformed to the restraining plate with the equivalency of buckling strength. The square tubes of single-hatted and double-hatted sections are investigated. The double-hatted section members show symmetric and antisymmetric crushing modes depending on the stiffness of flanges. The single-hatted section members show only symmetric modes. The bifurcation point of the compact crushing modes are investigated by experiments and shown almost same thickness-width ratio of the rectangular tubes. A large maximum crippling strength can be obtained by double-hatted section members with proper flange dimensions.

  • Fouling is "a major unsolved" area in heat transfer research. Currently, fouling researches are performed in every directions-fundamental aspects, modeling and cumulating experimental data. In this study, an attempt was made to extend the knowledge in enhanced tube fouling. The Kern-Seaton fouling model which was originally proposed for smooth tube fouling was extended to repeated rib tubes. Key parameters-mass transfer coefficient and wall shear stress-were modeled for repeated rib tubes. Some critical points related with the enhanced tube fouling-uncertainties in the mass transfer rate, wall shear stress modeling, deformation of roughness shape during fouling-were discussed, and some quantitative evaluations were made.

  • The purpose of this study is not only to evaluate thermal performance but also to find the stress behavior of heat transfer tubes under the part load operation in Heat Recovery Steam Generator. Flow analysis was performed to know the behavior of exhaust gas from gas turbine and thermal performance was calculated using distribution of hot exhaust velocity. In addition, tubes temperature during operation were gathered from actual plant to verify the uneven flow distribution under part load operation. Stress analysis was performed using tubes temperature data gathered from actual plant under both part and full load operations to know the stress behavior of tubes.

  • A new forming method for metal/ other metal two-layer tubes by multi-billet extrusion (MBE) is introduced. The forming possibilities of two-layer tubes CDA 365(inner)/Al 1100(outer) and Al 2014(inner)/Al 1100(outer) by MBE are investigated according to the given frictional condition and die profile. The results show that two-layer tube composed by two types tube as abovementioned can be manufactured by MBE. Some stated variables in the forming process such as effective stress and normalized pressure at welding surface are analyzed by FEM code ($DEFORM^{TM}$-3D)

  • In order to investigate the physical mechanism of the energy cascade in homogeneous isotropic turbulence, we introduce Galilean-invariant energy and its transfer rate in the real space as a function of position, time and scale. By using a database of direct numerical simulations (DNS) of homogeneous isotropic turbulence, it is shown that (i) fully developed turbulence consists of multi-scale coherent vortices of tubular shapes, (ii) the energy at each scale is mainly confined in vortex tubes with the radii of the same order of the length scale, and (iii) the energy transfer takes place around pairs (especially, anti-parallel pairs) of such vortex tubes. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the energy cascade can be caused, in the real space, by the process of the stretching and creation of smaller (i.e. thinner) vortex tubes by the straining field around pairs of larger (i.e. fatter) vortex tubes. Indeed, it is quite easy to find such events (in our DNS fields) which strongly support this scenario of the energy cascade.

  • Single-phase heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops of R-718 were measured in smooth, horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 3.36 ㎜, 5.35 ㎜. 6.54 ㎜ and 8.12 ㎜, respectively. The experiments were conducted in the closed loop, which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. Data are presented for the following range of variables : Reynolds from 1000 to 20000. Single-phase heat transfer coefficients increased by 10∼30 % as the inner diameter of tube was reduced and it was found that a well-known previous correlation, Gnielinski's correlation was not suitable for the small diameter tubes. But the pressure drop in the small diameter tubes have been shown slightly deviations with Blauius' correlation. Based on an analogy between heat and mass transfer. the new heat transfer correlation is proposed to predict the experimental data successfully.

  • In the dismantling process of nuclear spent fuels, the spent fuel rod cutting process, followed immediately by the decladding process, performs the cutting the spent fuel rods to a proper length for fast decladding operation. In this paper, we analyzed the chemical compositions, mechanical properties, and physical characteristics for SUS and zircaloy tubes in order to identify the feasibility of cutter-blade type in cutting SUS and zircaloy tubes. It is considered that material, shape and angle, and heat treatment for fabricating the highly durable cutter blade and also it is investigated that the round-shape sustenance of cross-section, amount of debris production, and fire occurrence for measuring the cutting performance on SUS and zircaloy tubes, spent fuel rod cutting device is designed to be operated automatically through the remote control system for use in Hot Cell(radioactive) area and the electro-driven mechanical parts are modularized for easy maintenance. Results from various experiments confirm the efficiency of this device.

  • This paper presents the theoretical simulation of the response of 1020 carbon steel tubes subjected to symmetric and unsymmetric cyclic bending with or without external pressure by using the endochronic theory. Experimental data of 1020 carbon steel tubes tested by Corona and Kyriakides (1991) were used for evaluating the theoretical simulation. Several cases were considered in this study, they were symmetric bending without external pressure, symmetric bending with external pressure, unsymmetric bending without external pressure, and unsymmetric bending with external pressure. The responses of the moment-curvature, ovalization-curvature and ovalization-number of cycles with or without external pressure were discussed. It has been shown that the theoretical simulations of the responses correlate well with the experimental data.

  • Steady flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in the stenotic tubes with various stenotic shapes are numerically simulated. Validity of the modified power-law model as a constitutive equation for the purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid is discussed and the results of the power-law model are compared with those of the Carreau model, the Powell-Eyring model and experimental data for blood. Flow characteristics and reattachment lengths for non-Newtonian fluids in the stenotic tubes are presented extensively. Also, the analysis is extended to predict the influences of diameter ratio, stenosis spacing, number of stenosis and Reynolds number on the flow characteristics in the multiple stenotic tubes.
