Primary water stress corrosion cracking of steam generator tubings occur on many tubes in pressurized water reactors(PWRs), and they are repaired using sleeves or plugs. In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to know the leak behavior of the tubes, which have stress corrosion cracks. Crack development tests were carried out on the tubes at room temperature, and leak rate and burst pressure were measured on the degraded tubes at room temperature and a high temperature. No leakage was detected on the tubes where 100 % through wall crack developed, at 1560 psi, which is an operating pressure difference of pressurized water reactors(PWRs). In some tests, leak rates of the tubes increased with time at a constant internal water pressure. A test tube showed a very small amount of leakage at 2700 psi in a high temperature pressure test at $282^{\circ}C$, but it disappeared after the pressure increased slightly. Even cracks are 100 % through wall, they need to open in order to reach a certain amount of leak rate at the operating pressure difference.

An experimental study on evaporative heat transfer characteristics in micro-fin tubes before and after expansion process has been performed with R-22. Single-grooved micro-fin tubes with outer diameter of 9.52 mm were used as test sections, and it was uniformly heated by applying direct current to the test tubes. Experiments were conducted at mass flow rates of 20 and 30 kg/hr. For each mass flow rate condition, evaporation temperature was set at 5 and $15^{\circ}C$and heat flux was changed from 6 to 11 kW/$m^2$ The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of micro-fin tubes after expansion is decreased because of the crush of fins and enlargement of inner diameter compared to that before expansion. Convective boiling effect decreased remarkably at higher quality range in the micro-fin tube after expansion, and the difference of the heat transfer coefficient in micro-fin tubes before and after expansion was greater for higher quality region. The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of the micro-fin tube after expansion was 19.9% smaller on the average than that before expansion.
The cross sections of hollow cylindrical tubes ovalise under a pure bending condition, and this reduces their flexural stiffness as their curvatures increase. It is important to accurately evaluate this phenomenon, known as the 'Brazier effect', to understand the bending behaviour of the systems considered. However, if the tubes are supported by an elastic medium or foundation, the ovalisation displacements of their cross sections may decrease. From this point of view, the purpose of this research is to analytically investigate the bending characteristics of single- and double-walled elastic tubes contacted by an elastic material by considering the Brazier effect. The Brazier moment, which is the maximum moment-carrying capacity of the ovalised cross section, can be calculated by introducing the strain energy per unit length of the tube in terms of the degree of ovalisation for the tube and the curvature. The total strain energy of the double-walled system is the sum of the strain energies of the outer and inner tubes and that of the compliant core. Results are comparatively presented to show the variation in the degree of ovalisation and the Brazier moment for single- and double-walled tubes.
Pressure tubes made of Zr-2.5 wt% Nb alloy are important components consisting reactor coolant pressure boundary of a pressurized heavy water reactor, in which unanticipated through-wall cracks and rupture may occur due to a delayed hydride cracking (DHC). The Canadian Standards Association has provided deterministic and probabilistic structural integrity evaluation procedures to protect pressure tubes against DHC. However, intuitive understanding and subsequent assessment of flaw behaviors are still insufficient due to complex degradation mechanisms and diverse influential parameters of DHC compared with those of stress corrosion cracking and fatigue crack growth phenomena. In the present study, a deterministic flaw assessment program was developed and applied for systematic integrity assessment of the pressure tubes. Based on the examination results dealing with effects of flaw shapes, pressure tube dimensional changes, hydrogen concentrations of pressure tubes and plant operation scenarios, a simple and rough method for effective cooldown operation was proposed to minimize DHC risks. The developed deterministic assessment program for pressure tubes can be used to derive further technical bases for probabilistic damage frequency assessment.
This study deals with the collection of solar energy and its storage in evacuated tubular collector systems for different types of header design, flow passage and heat transfer devices. In order to elicit the most efficient combination of header design, flow passage, heat transfer hardware and operating conditions, a series of tests were done for the four different types of solar collectors utilizing vacuum tubes. The systems studied here either has the evacuated collector tubes with a metal cap on one end or the all-glass evacuated solar collector tubes These evacuated tubular collectors are known to be more efficient than the flat-plate ones in both direct and diffuse solar radiation. Test results show that the system comprised of the all-glass evacuated tubes with U-shaped copper pipes inside outperforms the other configurations. Especially, a rolled copper sheet tightly placed along the inner surface of each inner tube enhances heat transfer between the heated collector surface and the water contained in the U-shaped copper pipe.
In a nuclear power plant, steam generator tubes cover a major portion of the primary pressure-retaining boundary. Thus very conservative approaches have been taken in the light of steam generator tube integrity According to the present criteria, tubes wall-thinned in excess of 40% should be plugged whatever causes are. However, many analytical and experimental results have shown that no safety problems exist even with thickness reductions greater than 40%. The present criterion was developed about twenty years ago when wear and pitting were dominant causes for steam generator tube degradation. And it is based on tubes with single cracks regardless of the fact that the appearance of multiple cracks is more common in general. The objective of this study is to review the conservatism of the present plugging criteria of steam generator tubes and to propose a new coalescence model for two adjacent through-wall cracks existing in steam generator tubes. Using the existing failure models and experimental results, we reviewed the conservatism of the present plugging criteria. In order to verify the usefulness of the proposed new coalescence model, we performed finite element analysis and some parametric studies. Then, we developed a coalescence evaluation diagram.
As an alternative to the conventional fixed appliance that uses orthodontic brackets, a simple round tube without a bonding base can be bonded to the tooth surface by covering the tube with flowable resin. In this technique, bent wires cannot be inserted into the simple tubes; therefore, repositioning of the simple tubes is often required for adjustments. To reduce repositioning of simple tubes, a dome-shaped resin covering of the simple tube can be designed with a customized in-and-out compensation, using three-dimensional computer-aided design software based on digital simulation of orthodontic tooth movement. In the present case, the use of simple tubes bonded with customized resin coverings in a Class I nonextraction case is described in a 17-year-old male, in whom moderate crowding of the anterior teeth was treated over an 8-month period. This case shows that simple tubes can be used as an alternative to brackets in some Class I nonextraction cases, with the potential benefit of reducing decalcification.
Plastic buckling of tubular columns has been attributed to rotational instability of plastic hinges. The present study aimed to characterize the plastic hinges for two different grades of strain-hardening, examined in mild-steel (MS) and stainless-teel (SS) tubes with un-strengthened and strengthened conditions. At the primary stage, the formerly tested experimental specimens were simulated using full-scale FE models considering nonlinear response of the materials, then to estimate the characteristics of the plastic hinges, a meso model was developed from the critical region of the tubes and the moment-rotation diagrams were depicted under pure bending conditions. By comparison of the relative rotation diagram obtained by the full-scale models with the critical rotation under pure bending, the length and critical rotation of the plastic hinges under eccentric axial load were estimated. The stress and displacement diagrams indicated the mechanism of higher energy absorption in the strengthened tubes, compared to unstrengthened specimens, due to establishment of stable wrinkles along the tubes. The meso model showed that by increasing the critical rotation in the strengthened MS tube equal to 1450%, the energy absorption of the tube has been enhanced to 2100%, prior to collapse.

The friction factors according to the flow regimes in helical coil tubes depend on the coil diameter, the tube diameter, and the coil pitch. In previous studies, correlations for the laminar flow regime in helical coil tubes have been proposed. However, studies on the transition flow regime and the turbulent flow regime are insufficient and further researches are necessary. In this study, characteristics of the friction factors for the laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes in helical coil tubes were experimentally investigated. The helical coil tubes used in the experiments were made of copper. The curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes, which means the ratio of helical coil diameter to inner diameter of the helical coil tube are 24.5 and 90.9. Experiments were carried out in the range of $529{\leq}Re{\leq}39,406$ to observe the flows from the laminar to the turbulent regime. The friction factors were obtained by measuring the differential pressures according to the flow rates in the helical coil tubes while varying the curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes. Experimental data show that the friction factors for the helical coil tube with 24.5 in the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube were larger than those in the straight tube in all flow regimes. As the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube increases, the friction factor in turbulent flow regime tends to be equal to that of the straight tube. In addition, it was confirmed that the transition flow regimes in the helical coil tubes were much wider than those in the straight tube, also the critical Reynolds numbers were larger than those in the straight tube. The results obtained in this experimental study can be used as basic data for studies on the water hammer phenomenon in helical coil tubes.

Through the early 1900's, the evolution of the surface condenser was closely tied to the development of steam engine and the turbine. As the chemical and petroleum industries evolved in the 1900's, the use of surface condensers in many different processes. Today, industry uses condensers in many shapes and sizes. The actual condensation process occurs on the outside surface of tubes. The nature of this surface geometry affects the condenser's heat transfer performance. The first condensers were built with plain tubes. As tube manufacturing techniques advanced, manufacturers started making tubes with integral fins. In the 1940's, fin densities were limited to about 600 to 700 fins per meter(fpm) because of manufacturing procedure. Today new manufacturing techniques allow production of tubes with fin densities ranging from 750 to 1600 fpm. The integral-fin tubes investigated in this paper are nominally 19 mm diameter. Eight tubes have been used with trapezodially shaped integral-fins having fin density from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 grooves. For comparison, tests are made using a plain tube having the same inside diameter and an outside diameter equal to that at the root of the fins for the finned tubes. Betty and Katz's theoretical modelis is used to predict the R-11 condensation coefficient on horizontal integral-fin tubes having 748, 1024 and 1299 fpm. Experiments are carried out using R-11 as working fluid. The refrigerant condensates at a saturation state of $30^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface cooled by coolant. The amount of noncondensable gases present in the test loop is reduced to a negligible value by repeated purging. For a given heat input to the boiler and given cooling water flow rate, all test data are taken at steady state. The observed heat transfer enhancement for the finned and grooved tubes significantly exceeded that to be expected on grounds of increased area. For the eight fin tubes and one plain tube tested, the best performance has been obtained with a tube having a fin density of 1299 fpm, and a fin bight of 1.2mm and 30 grooves.
