  • In flows with deformation rates larger than the inverse Rouse time of the polymer chain, chains are stretched and their confining tubes become increasingly anisotropic. The pressures exerted by a polymer chain on the walls of an anisotropic confinement are anisotropic and limit chain stretch. In the Molecular Stress Function (MSF) model, chain stretch is balanced by an interchain pressure term, which is inverse proportional to the $3^{rd}$ power of the tube diameter and is characterized by a tube diameter relaxation time. We show that the tube diameter relaxation time is equal to 3 times the Rouse time in the limit of small chain stretch. At larger deformations, we argue that chain stretch is balanced by two restoring tensions with weights of 1/3 in the longitudinal direction of the tube (due to a linear spring force) and 2/3 in the lateral direction (due to the nonlinear interchain pressure), both of which are characterized by the Rouse time. This approach is shown to be in quantitative agreement with transient and steady-state elongational viscosity data of two monodisperse polystyrene melts without using any nonlinear parameter, i.e. solely based on the linear-viscoelastic characterization of the melts. The same approach is extended to model experimental data of four styrene-butadiene random copolymer melts in shear flow. Thus for monodisperse linear polymer melts, for the first time a constitutive equation is presented which allows quantitative modeling of nonlinear extension and shear rheology on the basis of linear-viscoelastic data alone.

  • Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R22, R4IO, Propane(R290) were measured inside a horizontal 9 hole aluminum multi-channel flat tube. The main test section in the refrigerant loop was made of a 0.53 m long multi-channel flat tube of hydraulic diameter of 1.4 mm. Refrigerant was cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Data were obtained in qualities of 0.1 ${\sim}$ 0.9 at mass flux of $200{\sim}400$ $kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of $7.3{\sim}7.7$ $kW/m^2$ at the saturation temperature of $4^{\circ}C$. All popular heat transfer correlations in single-phase subcooled liquid flow and flow condensation originally developed for large single tubes predicted the present data of the multi channel flat tube within 25% deviation when effective heat transfer area was used in determining experimental data. This suggests that there is little change in flow characteristics and patterns when the tube diameter is reduced down to 1.4 mm diameter range. Hence, a modified correlation based on the present data was proposed which could be applied to small diameter tubes with effective heat transfer area. The correlation showed a mean deviation of less than 20% for all data.

  • This study was carried out numerically to investigate the air flow and thermal performance around single and parallel fin-tube heat exchangers and the cooling performance of the fluid inside the heat exchangers. In this study, the air velocity(1~7m/s), the pitch of fin(4, 6.1, 8, 11.3, 18.3, 44mm) and the diameter of fin(31, 33, 35, 37, 39mm) were varied. The flow rate of the water at the fin-tube heat exchanger inlet is 89cc/min and the water temperature is 353K. The air temperature at the upstream region of the heat exchanger is 300K. flow rate of the water at the fin-tube heat exchanger inlet is 80cc/min and the water temperature is 353K. It was found that the air pressure drop around single and parallel fin-tube heat exchangers was highly dependent on the air velocity and the fin pitch, but was independent of the fin diameter. Also, it was shown that pressure drop increased more the parallel arrangements than in single heat exchanger. The temperature difference of water at the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger depended on the air velocity, the fin pitch and the fin diameter, and it was found that the parallel arrangement method further reduced the temperature of water. It was shown that the Nusselt number increased as the Reynolds number and the fin pitch increased, and decreased as the fin diameter increased.

  • Chracteristics on evaporating pressure drop of HCs refrigerants inside a horizontal tube were studied experimentally. Experimental results were presented for pressure drops of hydrocarbon refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 inside a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. Three tubes with a tube diameter of 12.70mm, 9.52mm and 6.35mm were used for this study. Hydrocarbon refrigerants showed higher evaporating pressure drop than that of R-22 in all tubes. The highest pressure drop was founded in R-600a. The highest evaporating perssure drop of all refrigerants was shown in a tube diameter of 6.35mm with same mass flux. The results can be used as the basic data for the design of heat exchanger using hydrocarbon refrigerants as an alternatives.

  • There are three types that geometrical arrangement of the pulse tube and regenerator - in line type, U type, and coaxial type. The most compact and convenient one practical applications is the coaxial type. It can replace Stirling cryocooler without any change to the Dewar or the connection to the cooled devices. To investigate effects of the inertance tube, we perform experiments with varying inertance tube inner diameter and length. The experimental results show that optimum inertance tube inner diameter and length are 1.3mm, 1900mm respectively.

  • A closed circuit cooling tower having high temperature of cooling water and small water flow rate is investigated. To study the characteristics of the heat transfer of heat exchanges in a cooling tower with multi paths a numerical method is used. The results show that the staggered tube arrangements in a bank show better performance than aligned ones for temperature variation with various outer diameters of tube bundles. In case of one pass, the 15.88 mm tube case shows about 9% better performance than the 25.4 mm tube case. In two paths, the tube outside diameter of 15.88 mm show about 14.4% better results than the 25.4 mm diameter case.

  • Effects of tube inclination on pool boiling heat transfer have been studied for the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. For the analysis, seven inclination angles varying from the horizontal to the vertical and two tube diameters(25.4 and 30.0 mm) are tested. According to the results, inclination angles result in much change on heat transfer. For the same wall superheat(about $5.3^{\circ}C$) the ratio between two heat fluxes for the $45^{\circ}$ inclined and the vertical has the value of more than five when the tube diameter is 25.4mm. As the inclination angle is increasing from the horizontal to the vertical direction heat transfer is gradually increasing because of the increase in liquid agitation. However the detailed tendency depends on the ratio between the tube length and the diameter.

  • To predict the service life of an organic vapor respirator cartridge, the breakthrough curve of respirator was simulated using a fixed-bed adsorption model and compared with that of sampling tube. And the effects of bed porosity, length to diameter ratio and flow rate of the sampling tube were studied. The life time of respirator cartridge was increased with the decrease of particle size and bed porosity. And the breakthrough time of sampling tube was affected by the flow rate, however not by the length to diameter ratio. The 10% breakthrough time of the sampling tube was corresponded with that of cartridge.

  • Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.

  • The present study investigated two-phase flow distribution and phase separation of R-22 refrigerant through various types of branch tubes. The key experimental parameters were the orientation of inlet and branch tubes (horizontal and vertical), diameter ratio of branch tube to inlet tube (1 and 0.61), mass flux (200-500 kg/㎡s), and inlet quality (0.1-0.4). The predicted local pressure profile in the tube with junction was compared and generally agreed with the measured data. The local pressure profile within the pressure recovery region after the junction has to be carefully investigated for modeling the pressure drop through the branch. The equal flow distribution case can be found by adjusting the orientation of the inlet and branch tubes and the diameter ratio of the branch tube to the inlet tube. The T-junction with horizontal inlet and branch tubes showed the nearly equal phase distribution ratio. The quality at the branch tube varied from 0 to 1 as the orientation of the branch tube changed, while it varied within${\pm}$50% as the orientation of the inlet tube changed.
