  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate preharvest drop control in 'Tsugaru' apple with combined treatments of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and several adhesive agents. AVG+Silwet L-77 at $75+1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was most effective among the tested combinations. Little or no significant difference was observed among the different application times of AVG+Silwet L-77. AVG+Silwet L-77 significantly reduced preharvest drop while increasing fruit weight, fruit length, diameter and fruit firmness. All the tested combinations were generally effective in reducing preharvest drop as compared to dichlorprop and in maintaining better fruit quality.

  • At harvest, the starch contents of apples, which were related to their maturity, were quantified by using image analysis. The stained area was measured by a computer vision system when an apple slice was stained with KI/I$_2$ solution. The stained area ratio of the stained area of the apple slice to its whole area, or the starch index, was defined as an indicator of starch content. When Tsugaru apples were manually sorted into immature, turning and mature groups, their starch indices were 0.374, 0.312 and 0.129, respectively. Meanwhile, the starch index had correlation to various physicochemical properties of Tsugaru apples. At the statistically significant level of 0.1 %, it was correlated with the pH value, bio-yield force, rupture force and color of intact and skin-removed apples. At the 1 % significant level, it had the correlation with the density and moisture content.

  • Studies were carried out to compare from the viewpoint of peroxidase isoenzyme patterns by ages, locations and organs. In addition, the relationships among six cultivars peroxidase isoenzyme patterns were compared and the relationships between cultivars and their hybrids were examined. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The zymogram was not affected by the ages of 'Fuji' cultivar. 2. There was no locational difference in zymogram among Suwon, Taejon and Yesan in 'Fuji' and 'Tsugaru' cultivars. 3. Significant difference in isozyme patterns was found between stems and leaves in 'Fuji' and 'Tsugaru' cultivars. 4. There were some differences in zymogram among 'Ralls Genet', 'Fuji', 'Jonathan', 'Starking', 'Golden Delicous' and 'Tsugaru' cultivars. 5. Classification was made by the peroxidase isozyme development between cultivars and their hybrids. 1) The type showed both parent's isozyme pattern. 2) The type showed a loss of a part of parent's isozyme bands. 3) The type developed new isozymes which were not detected in parent plants.

  • This study was carried out to investigate changes in cell wall components and solubilization and depolymerization of pectin and neutral sugar polymers during softening of 'Tsugaru' apples. Pectic polysaccharides were solubilized in different solvents, distilled-water, 0.05 M CDTA, 0.05 M $Na_2CO_3$, and 8 M KOH, from cell wall materials during fruit softening. The uronic acid contents in distilled-water fraction rapidly increased along with fruit softening at 4 weeks after ambient storage. In the change of non-cellulosic neutral sugars in the cell wall of ‘Tsugaru’ fruits, the major sugar was galactose and arabinose in distilled-water, 0.05 M CDTA and 0.05 M $Na_2CO_3$ soluble fractions, and it was glucose, galactose and xylose in 8 M KOH fraction. Especially the change of galactose contents in distilled-water fraction was increased greatly along with fruit softening. When uronic acid polymers (UAP) and carbohydrate polymers (CP) in distilled-water fraction were filtered and separated using Sepharose CL-2B column, the high molecular UAP and CP were degraded to the low molecular ones from at harvest to softening fruit. Thus, the amount of high molecular polymers were greatly decreased along with fruit softening.

  • This study was conducted to find out the freezing hardness of apple tree as influenced by dwarfrootstocks, cultivars, and low temperature treatments. The dwarf-rootstocks used were M.9 and M.26, and three cultivars used were early-maturing 'Tsugaru', mid-maturing 'Hongro', and late-maturing 'Fuji'. Chilling temperatures were applied from $0^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$. Checking points of apple tree for freezing hardness were rootstock, trunk, feather, floral bud and foliar bud. Investigations were evaluated by the measure of water loss, electrolyte leaching, and sprouting. The results did not show the differences in water loss, electrolyte leaching, and sprouting by dwarf-rootstocks. Water loss of 'Fuji' was lower than that of 'Tsugaru' and 'Hongro', but sprouting ratio of 'Fuji' was higher than that of 'Tsugaru' and 'Hongro'. Water loss and electrolyte leaching increased as treated by lower temperature, while sprouting ratio decreased. In $-35^{\circ}C$ treatment, sprouting of rootstock and trunk part were higher than that of feather, while sprouting of floral bud was lower than that of foliar bud. Sprouting of bourse shoot at the accumulated low temperature in terms of $-10^{\circ}C$ per day was 100% in the 28 days, and sharply decreased about 50% in the 35 days. In conclusion, there were no differences in freezing hardness between M.9 and M.26, but freezing hardness of late-maturing cultivar was tended to stronger than that of early-maturing and mid-maturing cultivars. Freezing hardness of floral bud was extremely weak $-30^{\circ}C$.

  • Contents of free sugars and sorbitol and their distributional profiles in Tsugaru, Fuji, Jonathan (Hong-Ok), and New Jonagold (Sin-Heung) apple cultivars were evaluated. Average total sugar contents of Tsugaru, Fuji, Jonathan, and New Jonagold were 9.62, 11.79, 11.20, and 10.28%, respectively. HPLC results showed sucrose, glucose, fructose, and sorbitol contents of apples ranged 0.72-3.26, 1.81-3.16, 5.08-6.96, and 0.22-0.96%, respectively. Ratios of individual sugar and sorbitol to sum of fructose, glucose, sucrose, and sorbitol (TS+S) were estimated for all apples. Fructose/TS+S and glucose/TS+S ratios did not differ significantly among cultivars, whereas sucrose/TS+S and sorbitol/TS+S ratios varied. Fructose/glucose ratios were 2.295, 2.244, 2.161, and 2.393 for Tsugaru, Fuji, Jonathan, and New Jonagold, respectively.

  • Water masses and circulations around Korean peninsula are briefly described based on recent studies. The results of theses studies are discussed from the physical point of view. Oceanic conditions in this region are largely due to the roles played by the Tsushima Warm Current, an onshore extension of the Kuroshio, and local conditions such as wind, surface heat flux and fresh water input etc. To the south and west of Korea, the northern/western border of the Tsushima Warm Current Water is roughly the line joining Taiwan and Cheju island. In summer, it is affected by large amount of fresh water discharged from the Changjiang and in winter, an intrusion of this water into the Yellow Sea is induced by the prevailing northwesterly monsoon wind. To the east of Korea, the Tsushima Warm Current Water presents roughly south of the line joining the wast coast of Korea near 37-38$^{\circ}$N and Tsugaru-Soya Straits in the northern Japan. But this situation, together with those in deeper layers, may greatly be changed by winter atmospheric conditions (wind and surface heat flux). The seas around Korea are not yet physically well understood and many problems wait physical explanations. Some problems, along with personal views of them, are mentioned.

  • The responses of 'Tsugaru' apple and 'Baekhyang' peach fruits treated with 1-MCP, the ethylene inhibitor, were compared. In Tsugaru apple fruits, the reduction of flesh firmness and titratable acidity were significantly retarded for 2 weeks by the treating fruits with 1 or 5 ppm of 1-MCP immediately after harvest The respiration decreased continually for 2 weeks and the onset of ethylene production were also retarded severely. However, in Baekhyang peach fruits, the effects of 1-MCP treatment on the respiration and ethylene production were only transient and the firmness reduction was retarded slightly by the repeated 1-MCP treatments. The responsiveness of the Baekhyang peach fruits on ethylene seems to be recovered rapidly after 1-MCP treatment. In case of Baekhyang fruits, the 1-MCP should be treated repeatedly for effective ethylene inhibition, and the ethylene accumulation should be avoided during the 1-MCP treatment.
