  • The estimation of time-series data is fundamental process in many data analysis cases. However, the unwanted measurement error is usually added to true data, so that the exact estimation depends on efficient method to eliminate the error components. The wavelet transform method nowadays is expected to improve the accuracy of estimation, because it is able to decompose and analyze the data in various resolutions. Therefore, the wavelet based Kalman filter method for the estimation of time-series data is proposed in this paper. The wavelet transform separates the data in accordance with frequency bandwidth, and the detail wavelet coefficient reflects the stochastic process of error components. This property makes it possible to obtain the covariance of measurement error. We attempt the estimation of true data through recursive Kalman filtering algorithm with the obtained covariance value. The procedure is verified with the fundamental example of Brownian walk process.

  • It is not easy to select a linear mixed model since the main interest for model building could be different and the number of parameters in the model could not be clearly defined. In this paper, performance of conditional Akaike Information Criteria and its bias-corrected version are compared with marginal Bayesian and Akaike Information Criteria through a simulation study. The results from the simulation study indicate that bias-corrected conditional Akaike Information Criteria shows promising performance when candidate models exclude large models containing the true model, but bias-corrected one prefers over-parametrized models more intensively when a set of candidate models increases. Marginal Bayesian and Akaike Information Criteria also have some difficulty to select the true model when the design for random effects is nested.

  • Based on the fact that obesity is a complicated disease, we must treat obesity in a holistic way, but psychological factors are usually neglected in the clinical field. Oriental Medicine is basically holistic and psychosomatic, however, there are very few psychotherapy approaches in Oriental Medical treatment. In this review Oriental Medicine psychotherapy is outlined and a new model for oriental psychotherapy for the treatment of obesity is introduced. This program has a multi dimensional approach that includes behavioral, cognitive and spiritual components. The behavioral component relates to the discipline of diet and exercise. The cognitive aspect focuses on the mind. The third and possibly the most important component deals with one's spirit and awareness of their true self. This program is called "Yangsung" which means "Finding and raising one's true self."

  • Quality is distinguished from the other important management indicators, cost and profitability, by the features of its far longer history and of common concern to both manufacturer and customer. We may say from this that quality has a far more human aspect than either cost or profitability. We stress the importance of establishing “quality culture.” But we do not commonly use the terms of “cost culture” or “productivity culture.”In addition, we know from our experiences that improving quality by creative methods can lead to lower cost and higher productivity, although the converse is not necessarily true. In the Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, it is known that the character of human needs changes from extrinsic and material ones at lower levels to intrinsic and mental or spiritual ones at higher levels. We know from our experience that employee satisfaction is closely linked with quality, which is of more human nature and can further be deployed into the detailed elements of quality. The leaders and managers should positively display leadership and respond to the efforts of the subordinates. Without these managerial leadership and efforts, it is almost impossible to provide essential and true customer satisfaction. They are the indispensable elements for business excellence.

  • Variation of temperature field in a Hele-Shaw convection cell was measured by using a HSI true color image processing system and TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal) solution. The relationship between the hue value of TLC color image and real temperature was obtained and this calibration result was used to measure the true temperature. The temperature field in the Hele-Shaw convection cell shows periodic characteristics of 45 sec at Ra = 9.3 * 10$\^$6/. The temperature field measurement technique developed in this study was proved to be a useful and powerful tool for analyzing the unsteady thermal fluid flows.

  • The progressive in English is taken to be an operator which takes a non-stative predicate and returns a predicate which denotes a process with a temporal frame around some definite time or event. When, it is combined with a predicate which has a culmination in the event, the sentence means that the culmination has not come yet. So the event denoted by the base predicate is not true at the current time. On the other hand, when it is combined with a predicate which has no culmination in the event, the event denoted by the base predicate is taken to be true. In this paper, this is explained by the semantics of the progressive based on the notion of contributiveness. I propose that a progressive sentence is verified by some subevents which are contributive to the current situation and the progress of the event beyond the threshold level of the event denoted by the base predicate. A sub-situation is contributive if the addition of it to the previous situation is more likely to lead to the whole situation than the previous situation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to expand Stowell (1993), Stowell (1995), Stowell (1996)'s syntactic analysis of tense in English. Stowell treats Tense as a dyadic predicate of temporal ordering which takes those two time-denoting phrases as its arguments. He further argues that those two morphemes 'resent' and 'past' are polarity-sensitive elements encoding an LF-scope relation with respect to true PAST tense. This paper proposes that English future 'will' should be treated as a true tense and that its future morpheme is an anti-PAST polarity item. It also provides a syntactic interpretation of a peculiar morphological aspect of English that it has no future form of the verb. To this end, Stowell's analysis is incorporated into the Minimalist program of Chomsky(1995). It is proposed that, unlike in other languages like French and Spanish, FUTURE in English is of an affix. This provides an intuitively correct description of why English verbs do not have a future form like other languages. The last but not least point which this paper will discuss is that Ogihara (1995a)'s claim that the referential theory of tensed sentences is inadequate is untenable.

  • Let Hn be the n-th harmonic number and let νn be its denominator. Shiu proved that there are infinitely many positive integers n with νn = νn+1. Recently, Wu and Chen proved that the set of positive integers n with νn = νn+1 has density one. They also proved that the same result is true for the denominators of alternating harmonic numbers. In this paper, we prove that the result is true for the denominators of 𝜀-harmonic numbers, where 𝜀 = {𝜀i}i=1 is a pure recurring sequence with 𝜀i ∈ {-1, 1}.

  • The main objective of this study is to evaluate the true fracture energy and monitor the damage progression in steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) specimens using acoustic emission (AE) features. Four point bending test is carried out using pre-notched plain and fibre reinforced (0.5% and 1% volume fraction) - concrete under monotonic loading. AE sensors are affixed at different locations of the specimens and AE parameters such as rise time, AE energy, hits, counts, amplitude and duration etc. are obtained. Using the captured and processed AE event data, fracture process zone is identified and the true fracture energy is evaluated. The AE data is also employed for tracing the damage progression in plain and fibre reinforced concrete, using both parametric- and signal- based techniques. Hilbert - Huang transform (HHT) is used in signal based processing for evaluating instantaneous frequency of the acoustic events. It is found that the appropriately processed and carefully analyzed acoustic data is capable of providing vital information on progression of damage on different types of concrete.

  • High temperature compression tests for newly developed Al-Zn-Mg alloy were carried out to investigate its hot deformation behavior and obtain deformation processing maps. In the compression tests, cylindrical specimens were deformed at high temperatures ($300-500^{\circ}C$) and strain rates of 0.001-1/s. Using the true stress-true strain curves obtained from the compression tests, processing maps were constructed by evaluating the power dissipation efficiency map and flow instability map. The processing map can be divided into three areas according to the microstructures of the deformed specimens: instability area with flow localization, instability area with mixed grains, and stable area with homogeneous grains resulting from continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). The results suggest that the optimal processing conditions for the Al-Zn-Mg alloy are $450^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate of 0.001/s, having a stable area with homogeneous grains resulting from CDRX.
