2010년 태풍 특징 (Characteristics of Tropical Cyclones in 2010)

  • In 2010, only 14 tropical cyclones (TCs) were generated over the western North Pacific (WNP), which was the smallest since 1951. This study summarizes characteristics of TCs generated in 2010 over the WNP and investigates the causes of the record-breaking TC genesis. A long-term variation of TC activity in the WNP and verification of official track forecast in 2010 are also examined. Monthly tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly data reveal that El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event in 2010 was shifted from El Ni$\tilde{n}$o to La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in June and the La Ni$\tilde{n}$a event was strong and continued to the end of the year. We found that these tropical environments leaded to unfavorable conditions for TC formation at main TC development area prior to May and at tropics east of $140^{\circ}E$ during summer mostly due to low SST, weak convection, and strong vertical wind shear in those areas. The similar ENSO event (in shifting time and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a intensity) also occurred in 1998, which was the second smallest TC genesis year (16 TCs) since 1951. The common point of the two years suggests that the ENSO episode shifting from El Ni$\tilde{n}$o to strong La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in summer leads to extremely low TC genesis during La Ni$\tilde{n}$a although more samples are needed for confidence. In 2010, three TCs, DIANMU (1004), KOMPASU (1007) and MALOU (1009), influenced the Korean Peninsula (KP) in spite of low total TC genesis. These TCs were all generated at high latitude above $20^{\circ}N$ and arrived over the KP in short time. Among them, KOMPASU (1007) brought the most serious damage to the KP due to strong wind. For 14 TCs in 2010, mean official track forecast error of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for 48 hours was 215 km, which was the highest among other foreign agencies although the errors are generally decreasing for last 10 years, suggesting that more efforts are needed to improve the forecast skill.

우리 나라 일부 지역에 있어서 개회충증의 혈청역학적 조사 (Seroprevalence Rate of Toxocariasis in Keoje-Island and Inchon City of Korea)

  • 개회충증에 대한 IgG 항체반응을 ELISA를 이용하여 거제도 및 인천 지역 주민의 혈청 역학적 조사를 시행하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 개회충증에 대한 혈청 항체 양성률은 거제도 지역 주민은 15.7%를 나타내었다. 성별 양성률을 보면 남자는 7.4%인데 비하여 여자는 23.8%의 높은 양성률을 나타내었으며 통계학적으로 남 녀 성별간에 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<0.05). 연령별 양성률을 비교하면 남 녀 모두 20대에서 각각 14.3%, 39.3%로 가장 높았다. 인천 지역 주민은 13.1%의 양성률을 보였다. 남자는 14.4%, 여자는 12.1%의 양성률을 나타내었으며 성별간의 유의한 차이는 볼 수 없었다. 연령별로는 남자는 전 연령층에서 비슷한 양성률을 나타내었으나 30대에서 17.8%로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 여자는 6.3%-20.0%의 양성률을 나타내었으며 10대에서 가장 높은 양성률을 보였다. 지역간의 통계학적 유의성차이는 전체 및 남자에서는 없었으나 여자에서는 차이가 있었다(p<0.05). ELISA 방법으로 혈청 항체가가 양성으로 나타난 혈청을 immunoblotting한 결과 거제도 지역 15 예 중 9예가 양성으로 나타났으며 인천 지역은 27예 중 22예가 양성반응을 보였다.

국외 도입 열대·아열대 작물의 국내 재배실태 및 과제 (Current Situations and Prospects on the Cultivation Program of Tropical and Subtropical Crops in Korea)

  • 기후변화 적응과정에서 도입 작물의 국내 재배실태를 조사하고 대응과제를 도출코져본 연구를 수행하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 도입 열대 아열대 채소 재배현황(2015년 기준)은 18작목으로 재배농가수는 920농가, 재배면적은 321 ha로 조사 추정되었고, 재배면적이 많았던 작물은 울금, 여주, 아스파라거스, 삼채, 허브류 순이었다. 도입 열대 아열대 과수류 재배 현황은 2015년 국내재배 농가수와 재배면적은 264농가 106.5 ha로 추정되며, 전년대비 각각 51.7%와 83.7% 증가하였다. 도입 특약용작물 재배현황(2015년 기준)은 10작물로 753농가에서 재배면적 276.3 ha로 조사 되었으며 재배면적이 많았던 작물은 강황, 감초, 마카, 모링가, 포포나무 순이었다. 도입 열대 아열대 작물의 국내 재배가 안정적으로 정착되기 위해서는 국내 재배적응성 검정에 의거 재배환경면에서의 안전성과 경제성이 있어야 하며, 생산물의 이용과 유통 및 판로의 확보 문제, 외국현지 수입산과의 경쟁력 등을 고려할 필요가 있고, 국가 간 이동에 따른 생물다양성협약 등 국제협약 및 국내 종자산업법에 의하여 도입되어야 할 것이다.

고온하에서의 스프링의 피로특성에 관한 연구 (A study on fatigue characteristics of spring under high-temperature)

  • The fatigue characteristic study of a Pony Coil spring is performed by considering the tropical service conditions in the range of 50.deg. C through 150.deg. C. The experiment results of the static and dynamic characteristics of the test pieces agreed with the result of the strain analysis by wittricke's method. The strain energy value is increased as temperature rises. An increase is 1.58% at 100.deg. C and 2.26% at 150.deg. C after fatigue tests. The elastic strain is also decreased as temperature rises.

황산을 이용한 열대작물 오일의 전처리 반응 최적화 및 바이오디젤 생산 (Optimization of Pre-treatment of Tropical Crop Oil by Sulfuric Acid and Bio-diesel Production)

  • 해외 열대작물 씨앗에서 추출한 식물성 오일을 이용하여 바이오디젤을 생산하고 물성분석을 통해 차량연료로서의 사용가능성을 검토하는 연구를 수행하였다. 유리지방산 함량이 높은 열대작물 오일의 효율적인 바이오디젤 생산을 위해서는 유리지방산을 산촉매로 에스테르화한 후 전이에스테르화 반응하는 2단계 반응공정의 적용이 필요하였다. 전처리(에스테르화) 반응에 적합한 촉매를 선정하기 위해 3가지 산 촉매의 비교실험 수행 결과 황산이 최적 촉매임을 확인하였고, 반응표면분석법(response surface method, RSM)에 의해 도출한 최적 반응조건은 황산 촉매 0.982%와 메탄올 26.7%로 나타났다. 전이에스테르화 반응에 대한 최적화 실험을 반응표면분석법에 근거하여 수행하고, 결과로 KOH 촉매 1.24%, 메탄올 22.76%로 확인되었지만 본 연구팀의 선행 실험의 반응조건(KOH 0.8%)보다 과량의 촉매가 투입된 것으로 나타났다. 이에 대한 확인실험으로 메탄올과 촉매 투입량에 대한 추가 실험을 수행하였으며, 그 결과로서 최적 반응조건으로 KOH 촉매 0.8%와 메탄올:오일 몰비 6.2:1로 도출하였으며 반응생성물의 분석결과 지방산 메틸에스테르(fatty acid methyl ester, FAME) 100.8%, 산가 0.45 mgKOH/g, 수분 0.00%, 산화안정성 0.70 h, 총 글리세롤 함량 0.04%, Mono-glyceride 함량 0.04%, Di-glyceride 함량 0.01%, Tri-glyceride 함량 0.00%, 동점도($40^{\circ}C$에서) $4.041mm^2/s$, 저온필터막힘점 $1.0^{\circ}C$로 주요 바이오디젤 품질규격을 만족하는 것으로 나타났다.

REPRODUCTION AND CALF GROWTH IN BRAHMAN CROSSBRED AND SOUTH EAST ASIAN CATTLE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

  • Reproduction and growth to weaning were compared for Brahman crossbred (BX) and a local strain of South-East Asian cattle, "Javanese Zebu" (JZ) and their reciprocal crosses at "Erap" in the humid equatorial lowlands of Papua New Guinea. Forty heifers of each breed were mated continuously, half to bulls of each breed, for five years. BX calved first at 35 months while JZ calved at 31 months. Subsequent calving intervals were very short, at 370 and 341 days. JZ cows weighed about two thirds of the BX cattle at each stage of reproduction. Birth weights and growth to weaning were : BX 35 kg and 0.68 kg/d ; BX male $\times$ JZ female 29.3 kg and 0.53 kg/d ; JZ male $\times$ BX female 30.8 kg and 0.61 kg/d ; JZ 25 kg and 0.50 kg/d. The combination of small cow size, short calving interval and rapid calf growth resulted in the BX male $\times$ JZ female being the most efficient producer, in kg of calf weaned per cow mated per year while the reciprocal cross was the least efficient ; both straight-breds were equal and intermediate. These data show that indigenous equatorial cattle may not be inferior under good grazing conditions. For all traits, breed interactions (heterosis) was small and non-significant.

Determination of the Nutritive Value of Tropical Biomass Products for Monogastrics Using Rats: 2. Effects of Drying Temperature, Ensiling and Level of Inclusion of Cassava Leaves and Sweet Potato Vines

  • In a balance experiment with rats either 0, 25 or 50% of the crude protein (CP) provided as casein in the control diet was replaced with cassava leaves (CL) (Manihot esculenta Crantz) or sweet potato vines (SPV) (Ipomoea balala). CL were either sun-dried or oven-dried at $60^{\circ}C$ or $105^{\circ}C$ or ensiled, while the SPY were either sun-dried or ensiled. The experiment included 3 blocks with 30 rats in each and six individuals per treatment group. Drying at $105^{\circ}C$ resulted in a reduction of the lysine (Lys) content, suggestive of the occurrence of Maillard reactions. Ensiling CL and SPV slightly decreased the CP. content as well as the sum of essential amino acids. The apparent fecal CP digestibility (dCP) and nitrogen retention were negatively affected by increasing the level of replacement (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). The impaired amino acid profile observed when drying CL at $105^{\circ}C$ was found to be related to a slight decrease in dCP (p<0.001) as well as N retention (p<0.005). The effects of sun-drying and oven-drying in reducing the HCN content in CL were more potent than when ensiling. By increasing the total dietary HCN supply serum thiocyanide level, as well as urinary thiocyanate and linamarin output, were increased, with a weak relationship between them. Sun-drying and ensiling with cane molasses as additive successfully preserved the nitrogenous constituents and could be a means of preserving fresh green feed under tropical conditions.

Grazing Behaviour of Saanen and Toggenburg Goats in Sub-Humid Tropical Conditions of Kenya

  • The behaviour of 6 Toggenburg and 6 Saanen female goats, grazing on natural vegatation in a modified sub-humid tropical environment of Kenya, was studied during the dry (January and February) and wet (April and May) seasons in 1997. The two exotic breeds grazed for 12 h daily. Observation on feeding, standing, lying and ruminating was done chronometrically at five minute intervals between 0600 and 1800 h. These grazing times were based on the current practice of small holder farmers. During the dry period, the average feeding, standing, lying and ruminating time per 12 h period for Saanens was 5.63, 4.57, 1.80 and 1.50 h respectively while that for Toggenburgs was 7.26, 3.21, 1.53 and 1.96 h, respectively. In the wet(Green) season, the mean feeding, standing, lying and ruminating time for Saanens was found to be 5.08, 4.63, 2.29 and 0.72, respectively.Toggenburgs spent more time feeding (p<0.05) than Saanens in both seasons. It was also observed that standing occured more often in Saanens than the Toggenburgs in the dry season. During the wet period, Saanens ruminated significantly longer than the Toggenburgs. The health status of the animals was determined by analyzing the respiratory frequency, heart rate, rectal temperature, hemoglobin, erythrocytes and leucocytes of the experimental animals. All the clinical and physiological parameters were within the normal physiological range of healthy goats. It was concluded that differences in the grazing behaviour of Saanens and Toggenburgs in the modified tropical environment of Kenya, do exist.

Isolation and Characterization of a Feather Degrading Alkalophilic Streptomyces sp. TBG-S13A5 and its Keratinolytic Properties

  • Keratinases are of particular interest because of their action on insoluble keratins and generally on a broad range of protein substrates. Alkalophilic and neutrophilic actinomycete strains isolated from different soil samples, rich in keratinaceous substances were screened for keratinolytic activity. An alkalophilic isolate, TBG-S13A5, was found to possess good keratinolytic activity and was able to utilize feather as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. TBG-S13A5 exhibited an off-white aerial mass color with a rectus-flexibilis type of spore chain. The morphological, microscopical and biochemical characters were comparable with that of Streptomyces albidoflavus. Fatty acid methyl ester profiling (FAME) and 16S rDNA sequence analysis confirmed its identity as a strain of S. albidoflavus. Under submerged fermentation conditions, maximum protease production was recorded on the $5^{th}$ day of incubation at $30^{\circ}C$, using basal broth of pH 9.0 with 0.25% (w/v) white chicken feather. This strain could affect feather degradation when the initial pH was 8 and above and maximum protease production was recorded when the initial pH was around 10.5. The effectiveness of the crude enzyme in destaining and leather dehairing were also demonstrated.

열대 홍수림 주변 해역 환경 전이대의 식물플랑크톤 및 박테리아의 분포 (Distribution of Phytoplankton and Bacteria in the Environmental Transitional Zone of Tropical Mangrove Area)

  • In order to understand phytoplankton and bacterial distribution in tropical coral reef ecosystems in relation to the mangrove community, their biomass and activities were measured in the sea waters of the Chuuk and the Kosrae lagoons located in Micronesia. Chlorophyll a and bacterial abundance showed maximal values in the seawater near the mangrove forests, and then steeply decreased as the distance increased from the mangrove forests, indicating that environmental conditions for these microorganisms changed greatly in lagoon waters. Together with chlorophyll a, abundance of Synechococcus and phototrophic picoeukaryotes and a variety of indicator pigments for dinoflagellates, diatoms, green algae and cryptophytes also showed similar spatial distribution patterns, suggesting that phytoplankton assemblages respond to the environmental gradient by changing community compositions. In addition, primary production and bacterial production were also highest in the bay surrounded by mangrove forest and lowest outside of the lagoon. These results suggest that mangrove waters play an important role in energy production and nutrient cycling in tropical coasts, undoubtedly receiving large inputs of organic matter from shore vegetation such as mangroves. However, the steep decrease of biomass and production of phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria within a short distance from the bay to the level of oligotrophic waters indicates that the effect of mangrove waters does not extend far away.
