Changes of Feed Quality at Different Cutting Dates among Five Winter Cereals for Whole-Crop Cereal Silage in Middle Region (중부지역에서 총체맥류의 예취시기별 사료가치 변화)

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the different cutting dates on the changes of feed quality among five cereals (barley, wheat, rye, triticale and oat) for whole crop silage. Field trials were conducted at paddy field in Yesan, Chungnam Province and the aerial parts were clipped 10 days from 15 March to 15 June. Changes of acid detergent fiber (ADF) content in relation to different cutting dates was described by a quadratic curve for 5 winter cereals crops. ADF content reached a maximum at 5 days after heading in barley cultivar 'Youngyang', 7 days in wheat 'Keumkang', 18 days in rye 'Gogu', 1 days in triticale 'Shinyoung' and 10 days in oat 'Samhan'. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content were linearly increased as growing after overwintering and stagnated or slightly decreased after heading. The crude protein were linearly decreased throughout the growth period of 5 whole crop cereals. Digestible dry matter (DDM) content were decreased from early stages to heading and subsequently increased as grain filling. Relative feed value (RFV) for 5 crops were decreased as growing and subsequently increased as grain filling after heading. Barley cultivar for only forage use 'Youngyang' were lower at ADF and NDF content and higher at DDM and RFV after heading than those of other cereals for forage use. So, barley for whole crop silage was a good crop with high feed quality and high proportion of spikes compared with other winter cereal crops. Wheat cultivar for grain 'Keumkang' were higher at crude protein than those of other four cereals from overwintering to maturing and were higher at DDM and RFV after heading than those of rye, triticale and oat. Rye cultivar with cold tolerant and high fresh yielding 'Gogu' were highest at ADF and NDF content and lowest at DDM content and RFV. So, rye was a crop with low quality for forage use compared to other winter cereal crops. Triticale cultivar with flourishing and high yielding 'Shinyoung' was intermediated between barley and rye, and were linearly increased at DDM yield by different cutting dates. Oat cultivar with cold tolerant and high tillering 'Samhan' were lower at ADF and NDF content and higher at crude protein before heading, but after heading, there are not especially advantages compared to barley, wheat or triticale.

Effect of Triticale Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles on Ruminal Bacterial Populations as Revealed by Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction

  • Real time PCR was used in this study to determine the effect of triticale dried distillers grains with solubles (TDDGS) as a replacement for grain or barley silage in finishing diets on the presence of six classical ruminal bacterial species (Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens, Selenomonas ruminantium, Streptococcus bovis, Megasphaera elsdenii, Prevotella ruminicola and Fibrobacter succinogenes) within the rumen contents of feedlot cattle. This study was divided into a step-wise adaptation experiment (112 days) that examined the effects of adaptation to diets containing increasing levels of TDDGS up to 30% (n = 4), a short-term experiment comparing animals (n = 16) fed control, 20%, 25% or 30% TDDGS diets over 28 days, and a rapid transition experiment (56 days) where animals (n = 4) were rapidly switched from a diet containing 30% TDDGS to a barley-based diet with no TDDGS. It was found that feeding TDDGS as replacement for barley grain (control vs. 20% TDDGS) decreased 16S rRNA copy numbers of starch-fermenting S. ruminantium and S. bovis (p<0.001 and p = 0.04, respectively), but did not alter 16S rRNA copy numbers of the other rumen bacteria. Furthermore, feeding TDDGS as a replacement barley silage (20% vs. 25% and 30% TDDGS) increased 16S rRNA copy numbers of S. ruminantium, M. elsdenii and F. succinogenes (p<0.001; p = 0.03 and p<0.001, respectively), but decreased (p<0.001) the 16S rRNA copy number of P. ruminicola. Upon removal of 30% TDDGS and return to the control diet, 16S rRNA copy numbers of S. ruminantium, M. elsdenii and F. succinogenes decreased (p = 0.01; p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively), but S. dextrinosolvens and S. bovis increased (p = 0.04 and p = 0.009, respectively). The results suggest that replacement of TDDGS for grain reduces 16S rRNA copy numbers of starch-fermenting bacteria, whereas substitution for barley silage increases 16S rRNA copy numbers of bacteria involved in fibre digestion and the metabolism of lactic acid. This outcome supports the contention that the fibre in TDDGS is highly fermentable.

Growth of Seedling from Immature Kernel Harvested at Different Days after Flowering in Rye, Triticale, Wheat and Oat Cultivars (맥류미성숙 종자와 초기생육과의 관계)

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether seedling growth be affected by immature kernels from different stages after flowering in rye, triticale, wheat and oats cultivars, for two years in Suwon. Kernels reached a near-maximum test weight at 35 days after flowering in Paldanghomil and Dooroohomil (Rye), and 30 days in Sinkihomil (Triticale), Geurumil (Wheat), and Megwiri (Oats). Test weight of immature kernels from different days after flowering were not significantly correlated with germination percentage, but highly positively correlated with their seedling height, fresh and dry weight. However, seedling height is not different among seedlings from kernels harvested at 20, 25 and 30 days (maturing time) after flowering of Sinkihomil and Megwiri, and between 25 and 30 days (maturing time) of Geurumil. Also between seedlings from 25 day and 30 day-kernel after flowering are little difference of fresh and dry weight of Sinkihomil and Megwiri. In Suwon, located at the middle part of Korea, it was suggested that Paldanghomi1 and Dooroohomil could be harvested at 35 days (June 19, and June 24, respectively) after flowering, and Sinkihomil, Geurumil, and Megwiri, at 25days (June 24, June 14 and July 4, respectively) after flowering for seed of for2:ge production.

Changes in Forage Quality of Plant Parts with Harvesting Time in Five Winter Cereal Crops (총체사료용 맥류의 생육시기 및 식물체 부위별 사료가치 변화)

  • This study aims to understand the growth and changes of nutritional composition in five winter forage crops including barley, wheat, oat, rye and triticale. In Korea, the winter-season cultivation of the crops could enhance land use efficiency and improve the global competitiveness of domestic livestock industry by providing high quality forage. Total content of crude protein in plants decreased after heading. Leaves and spikes had high crude protein while stem showed the lowest with less than 7%. Contents of Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) in plants decreased with time after heading. Stem showed much greater content of ADF than leaves and spikes. There was linear relationship between ADF contents and ratios of stem weight and total weight. Contents of Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) also decreased with time after heading. Stem contained much higher NDF than leaves and spikes. There was a linear relationship between NDF contents and ratios of stem weight and total weight. Relative Feed Value (RFV) increased with maturing of spikes after heading in barley, wheat, oat and triticale. There was a negative relationship between Relative feed value and ratios of stem weight and total weight.

Quality Characteristics of Muffins using Ethanol Fermentation By-product of Triticale (라이밀의 에탄올 생산 후 발효 부산물을 이용한 머핀의 품질 특성)

  • This study was aimed to examine the quality characteristics of the bread with the muffin added with the by-product of fermented ethanol from wheat rye that has high $\beta$-glucan contents. In the muffin added with TEFB (Triticale Ethanol Fermentation By-product), the height of the muffin decreased as the additive contents increased. There was no significant difference among the volumes of the muffins added with TEFB 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%. In the muffin added with TEFB, the height of the muffin decreased as the additive contents increased. In the moisture measurement of TEFB muffin, the moisture contents increased as the TEFB additive contents increased. Using SEM, showed that as TEFB additive contents increased, gluten contents was relatively lowered, which led to the reduced gas retention power and generation of rough tissues. In chromaticity, as the TEFB additive contents increased, the brightness decreased and the redness and yellowness decreased as well. The result of texture measurement showed that as the TEFB additive contents increased, hardness increased. springiness decreased gradually as the TEFB additive contents increased. There was no significant difference in cohesiveness (p<0.005). Although there as signigicant difference between the control group and the additive group in gumminess (p<0.005), there was no significant difference for a certain amount of additive contents (p<0.05). While there was significant difference in chewiness between the control group and the additive group (p<0.05). there was no significant difference for a certain amount of additive contents (p<0.05). The result of taste test of TEFB added muffin showed that the preference for the muffins added with 5% or more TEFB decreased. This study found that more than 5% of TEFB additives to muffin decreases the preference level.

'Choyoung', Triticale Cultivar for Forage of Early-Heading, Resistance to Lodging and High Seed Production (조숙 내도복 종실 다수성 조사료용 트리티케일 품종 '조영')

  • 'Choyoung', a winter forage triticale cultivar (X Triticosecale Wittmack), was developed at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2015. The cultivar 'Choyoung' has the leaves of medium width, long length and green color and a medium grain of brown color. The heading date of the cultivar 'Choyoung' was April 30 which was 2 days earlier than that of check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. Its tolerance or resistance to cold, wet injury, powdery mildew, and leaf rust was similar to those of the check cultivar. But the resistance to the lodging of cultivar 'Choyoung' was stronger than that of the check. The average forage fresh and dry matter yield of cultivar 'Choyoung' at milk-ripe stages were 40.5 and $15.7MT\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, which were similar to those (40.3 and $16.1MT\;ha^{-1}$) of the check cultivar. The silage quality of 'Choyoung' was higher than that of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' in crude protein content (5.9%), while was similar to the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' in acid detergent fiber (33.9%), neutral detergent fiber (57.3%), and total digestible nutrients (62.2%). It showed a grain yield of $5.59MT\;ha^{-1}$, which was 38% higher than that of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' ($4.05MT\;ha^{-1}$). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing forage crops in areas in which average daily minimum mean temperatures in January are higher than $-10^{\circ}C$.

'Gwangyoung', Forage Triticale Cultivar of Winter Hardiness, Resistance to Lodging and High-Yielding (내한 내도복 다수성 조사료용 트리티케일 품종 '광영' 개발)

  • 'Gwangyoung', a winter forage triticale cultivar (X Triticosecale Wittmack), was developed at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2018. The cultivar 'Gwangyoung' has leaves of wide width, medium length, and green color, and spikes of medium length and yellowish-brown color, and a large grain of yellowish-brown color. The heading date of the cultivar 'Gwangyoung' was April 22 which was similar to check cultivar 'Shinyoung'. Its tolerance or resistance to cold, lodging, wet injury powdery mildew, and leaf rust were also similar to those of the check cultivar. The leaf blade ratio of 'Gwangyoung' (27.5%) was higher than that of 'Shinyoung' (21.2%). The average forage fresh and dry matter yield of cultivar 'Gwangyoung' at milk-ripe stages were 50.0 and 17.6 MT ha-1, respectively, which were higher than those (47.7 and 17.1 MT ha-1) of the check cultivar. The silage quality of 'Gwangyoung' was lower than that of the check cultivar 'Shinyoung' in crude protein content (5.3%) and total digestible nutrients (61.3%), while was higher than the check cultivar in neutral detergent fiber (58.2%) and acid detergent fiber (34.9%). 'Gwangyoung' showed the silage of 1 grade and a grain yield of 6.03 MT ha-1.
