  • Special Protection Scheme(SPS) for generator tripping action is an emergency control tool that secures the power system stability by instantly tripping the pre-determined number of generators to avoid the acceleration of the remaining generators in a large-scaled power plants when a fault occurs on the drawing transmission lines. However, since the existing operating conditions of SPS are set based on a peak demand, SPS could trip more generators than required if it is activated during the off-peak demand period. For this, this paper proposes the algorithm for setting the operating conditions of SPS through the online stability evaluation with the periodically updated operating conditions of power systems. The proposed algorithm adopts COA for the accuracy and speed of the stability evaluation, and can reduce the number of tripping generators by SPS during the off-peak demand period. This results in reducing the loss of profit caused by a fault on power systems.

  • In this paper, a method to calculate the ultimate compressive strength of welded one-sided stiffened plates simply supported along all edges is proposed. At first initial imperfections such as distortions and residual stresses due to welding are predicted by using simplified methods. Then, the collapse modes of the stiffened plate are assumed and collapse loads for each mode are calculated. Among these loads, the lowest value is selected as the ultimate strength of the plate. Collapse modes are assumed as follows ; (1) Overall buckling of the stiffened plate$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener bending (2) Local buckling of the plate part$\rightarrow$Local collapse of the plate part$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener yielding (3) Local buckling of the plate part$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener berthing (4) Local buckling of the plate part$\rightarrow$Local collapse of the plate part$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener tripping. The elastic large deflection analysis based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method is carried out, and plastic analysis assuming hinge lines is also carried out. Collapse load is defined as the cross point of the two analysis curves. This method enables the utimate strength to be calculated with small computing time and a good accuracy. Using the present method, characteristics of the stiffener including torsional rigidity, bending and tripping can also be clarified.

  • This study analyzed the causes of flood accidents, such as isolation and lost footing accidents in Dorimcheon, to provide legal and institutional improvements. For cause analysis, Field Investigation, Stakeholder Interview, Report, manual, Law et al. Review, Analysis of water level change characteristics, automatic alarm issuance standard level analysis, and evacuation time according to river control were evaluated. Dorimcheon has the characteristics of a typical urban river, which is disadvantageous in terms of water control. In addition, the risk of flood accidents is high because the section where fatal accidents occur forms sharply curved channels. Tripping and isolation accidents occur in the floodplain watch and evacuation stage, which is the stage before the flood watch and warning is issued. Because floodplain evacuation is issued only when the water level rises to the floodplain, an immediate response according to the rainfall forecast is essential. Furthermore, considering that the rate of water level rise is up to 2.62 cm/min in Sillimgyo 3 and Gwanakdorimgyo, sufficient evacuation time is not secured after the floodplain watch is issued. Considering that fatal accidents occurred 0.46 m below the standard water level for the flood watch, complete control is very important, such as blocking the entry of rivers to prevent accidents. Based on these results, four improvement measures were suggested, and it is expected to contribute to the prevention of Tripping and Isolation Accidents occurring in rivers.

  • Nearly a half of the accidents the old people had take place in home. Home safety will be more important than ever in rapidly increasing old aged in Korea. The purpose of this paper is to search the general characteristics of domestic accidents related to living environment of the old people experienced. The number of 248 respondents who had experienced of housing related accidents since recent 10 years were selected from 500 interviews with 65 years old and over during April 4th-26th, 2008. About a half of respondents had experienced home accidents. The entrance is the most common places the home accidents occurred, followed by bathrooms and stairs. flooring materials and raised floors are the most dangerous spots. Both places and dangerous objects are related each other. The place is also related to the type of dwelling. Slipping and tripping over most frequently happen in home accidents. It is related to the place like slipping in a bathroom or stairs, and tripping over in entrances. Mostly, legs and arms are injured by the home accidents. A safe home facilitates the old to live healthy and independent in their own places. A safe home for the old is a kind of new issues in Korea. Related policies and researches are about to sprout.

  • This study is focused on the residential spaces that the elderly wish to renovate and their willingness to improve residential environment as they grow old. The analysis shows, first, the most inconvenient places as they grow old are the stairs, following by the toilet and the bath. Second, the place that the elderly most wish to renovate is the floor, upgrading floors with non-slippery materials. And they wish to remove the height differences on the floor to protect them from tripping over, upgrade the floor plan for their convenience and renovate the storage and working spaces at the kitchen and dining areas. The more the government supports the costs of the residential renovation service, the more the elderly are willing to use the renovation service. The factors influencing their willingness to residential renovation are health, residential environment, experience to accidents and their allowances. The elderly who experienced accidents inside their residence are more willing to renovate their house. Even though the elderly wish to renovate their houses, it's not carried out due to the financial difficulties and the lack of information. Thus, the government should share the useful information about residential renovation for the safety of the elderly and find a way to raise money to cover the costs of the renovation.

  • Special Protection Scheme(SPS) that operates scenarios about faults beyond the normally protective action is wide system protection technology for the purpose of wide areas protection. Therefore, the SPS focuses on the improvement of the power supply capability by protecting the system rather than protecting the system equipments. Since the SPS requires emergency operation, the operation schedule is set up in advance by analyzing various scenarios. Since the SPS's action scheme uses generator tripping and is a classical method it is presently the most powerful one. However, as the setting of SPS is set to the most severe disturbance, the scheme tends to trip more generators than required to prevent fault propagation. It is highly likely that tripping generator units to prevent fault propagation would result in difficulty of system management and possibility of load shedding. Accordingly, it is desirable that generators are connected to the system within the range that ensures system stability and intelligent SPS is currently under development to solve the problem being stated. In this paper, as a part of developing the intelligent SPS, application of the fast-valving and braking resistor scheme to the generators is being proposed and analysed to reduce the number of tripped generators.

  • The conventional power system allowed only downstream power flow. Therefore, even if a fault occurs, only the forward current flow is considered. However, with the interest in distributed generation (DG), DGs such as Photovoltaic (PV), Wind Turbine (WT) are being connected to a power system. DGs have many advantages, but they also have disadvantage such as generation of reverse flow. Reverse flow can severely disrupt existing protection systems that only consider downstream power flow. The major problems that may arise from reverse power flow are blinding protection and sympathetic tripping. In order to solve such problems, the methods of installing a directional relay or a fault current limiter is proposed. However, this method is inconceivable because of the economics shortage. Therefore, in this paper, a distance relay installed in existing power system is used to solve the protection problem. Modeling of distance relay has been carried out using ElectroMagnetic Transients Program (EMTP), and it has been verified through simulations that the above problems can be solved by a distance relay.

  • An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer in the near-wake of a flat plate. The flow conditions in the vicinity of the trailing edge that is influenced by upstream condition history are an essential factor that determines the physical characteristics of a near-wake. Tripping wires attached at various positions were selected to change flow conditions of a boundary layer. The flows such as laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.98C from the leading edge are imposed in order to investigate the evolution of symmetric and asymmetric wake. An x-type hot-wire probe(55P61) is employed to measure at 8 stations in the near-wake. Test results show that the near-wake for the case of a turbulent boundary layer is relatively insensitive to instability after separating at the trailing edge, and Reynolds shear stress in the near-wake for the case of a turbulent boundary layer collapses due to turbulent kinetic energy.

  • Recently it is reported that many a malfunction of ELB which is represented by non-operated type ELB for an impulse wave, is caused by lightning impulse and transient ground potential rise due to nearby lightning strokes. In order to examine the cause of malfunction, 5 samples were investigated experimentally in this study. As each ELB has a different leakage current detecting circuit and wiring method, various characteristics were measured. As a result, all of them brought about malfunctions under the lightning impulse voltage less than 7 kV and the surge current less than 3 kA. Also the different aspects were measured with a polarity of injected surge and a position of MOV to protect the inner circuit of ELB. The Position and effects of protecting devices were suggested as a remedy.
