  • A thioamide, N-5-trifluoromethyl-6-methoxy-1-thionaphthoyl-N-m ethylglycine, undergoes trans${\rightleftharpoons}$cis photoisomerization around C-N bound in solution. Azulene quenching studies showed the photoisomerization to proceed via both singlet and triplet excited states. The total quantum yield of the trans${\rightarrow}$cis photoisomerization is about 0.26, 0.14 from the singlet excited state and 0.12 from the triplet excited state. Intersystem crossing and internal conversion quantum yields were calculated from sensitized photostationary state and a plausible mechanism is proposed.

  • Geometry relaxation effects on the formation of benzene excimer were investigated by means of ab initio calculation at SOS-CIS($D_0$)/aug-cc-pVDZ level. In the case of T-shaped dimer configuration, intermolecular interactions in the excited states are found to be nearly the same as those in the ground state and structural deformations are limited within a single molecule; the geometry relaxation effects are then negligible and singlet-triplet energy gap remains constant. As for face-to-face eclipsed dimer, on the other hand, both molecules undergo structural change. As a result, intermolecular interactions in the excited states are significantly different than those in the ground state. Although the intermolecular distances obtained from potential energy curve calculation with frozen molecular structures are in qualitative agreement, the excited-state binding energies are notably overestimated with respect to those at optimized structures. In particular, the effects are calculated to be larger in $T_1$ state and hence singlet-triplet energy gap, which reduces markedly in this configuration, is underestimated without relaxation.

  • The photohydration of 1-(m-nitrophenyl)-5, 5-dimethyl-1, 3-hexadiyne (m-NDHD) affords allenyl ketone compound (1) via triplet excited state which is converted into $\beta$-dicarbonyl compound (2) through thermal hydration. The allenyl ketone is formed by the synchronous addition of water with protonation at C$_1$ indicating that m-NDHD has the reverse polarization and greater electron withdrawing effect in the triplet excited state in comparison with p-NDHD.

  • The energy relaxation dynamics of the lowest excited singlet and triplet states of the Zn(II)porphyrin monomer and its directly linked arrays were comparatively investigated with increasing the number of porphyrin moieties. While the fluorescence decay rates and quantum yields of the porphyrin arrays increased with the increase of porphyrin units, their triplet-triplet (T-T) absorption spectra and decay times remained almost the same. The difference in the trends of energy relaxation dynamics between the excited singlet and triplet states has been discussed in view of the electronic orbital configurations.

  • The molecular geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies of biphenyl in the ground and the first excited triplet states have been calculated using the Hartree-Fock and Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) density functional methods with 6-31G* basis set. Structural change occurs from a twisted benzene-like to a planar quinone-like form upon the excitation to the first excited state. Scaled harmonic vibrational frequencies for the ground state obtained from the B3LYP calculation show good agreement with the available experimental data. A few vibrational fundamentals for both states are newly assigned based on the B3LYP results.

  • Bulk nanobubble is one of the nanoscopic gaseous state found in the solution. We measured transient absorption spectra of eosin Y in the excited triplet state ($^3EY^{2-*}$) to elucidate differences in the dissipation process of the bulk nanobubble of oxygen molecule at air pressure. The time dependence of the oxygen dissipation process was classified three time domains (P1, P2 and P3). The comparison of ordinary bubbling method gave different results at P3 in contrast to similar results at P1 and P2, indicating the existence of characteristic dissolving state in the case of nanobubble.

  • Two β-diketone derivatives bearing triphenylene (1-naphthalene-2-yl-3-triphenylen-2-yl-propane-1,3-dione (NTPD)) and naphthalene (1,3-di-naphthalene-2-yl-propane-1,3-dione (DNPD)) and their Ln(III) complexes (Ln = Er or Gd) were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated. The sensitized emission of Er3+ ion in Er3+-[NTPD]3(terpy) and Er3+-[DNPD]3(terpy) was observed upon excitation at absorption maximum of ligands. Their photophysical studies indicate the sensitization of Er3+ luminescence by energy transfer through the excited triplet state of β-diketone ligand. The energy transfer rate through the excited triplet state of β-diketone ligand to Er3+ ion occurs faster than that of the oxygen quenching rate.

  • The solvent coordination effect on the excited state processes of Mg(II)- and Zn(II)-phthalocyanines has been described. The triplet state of these compounds decays with mixed first and second order kinetics or mainly second order kinetics depending on the solvents used. The first order component of the rate constants decrease along with the series, dimethylsulfoxide (5-coordinated), 1-chloronaphthalene (4-coordinated) and piperidine (6-coordinated), while the second order rate constant is dependent on the diffusion rate constant of the solvents. The excited state quenching by methylviologen or p-benzoquinone is discussed. And ion recombination rate constant is given.

  • The low-lying electronic states of diazirine and 3,3'-dimethyldiazirine have been studied by high level ab initio quantum chemical methods. The equilibrium geometries of the ground state and the first excited singlet and triplet states have been optimized using the Hartree-Fock (HF) and complete active space SCF (CASSCF) methods, as well as using the Møller-Plesset second order perturbation (MP2) theory and the single configuration interaction (CIS) theory. It was found that the first excited singlet state is of 1 B1 symmetry resulting from the n- π* transition, while the first excited triplet state is of 3 B2 symmetry resulting from the π- π* transition. The harmonic vibrational frequencies have been calculated at the optimized geometry of each electronic state, and the scaled frequencies have been compared with the experimental frequencies available. The adiabatic and vertical transition energies from the ground electronic state to the low-lying electronic states have been estimated by means of multireference methods based on the CASSCF wavefunctions, i.e., the multiconfigurational quasidegenerate second order perturbation (MCQDPT2) theory and the CASSCF second-order configuration interaction (CASSCF-SOCI) theory. The vertical transition energies have also been calculated by the CIS method for comparison. The computed transition energies, particularly by MCQDPT2, agree well with the experimental observations, and the electronic structures of the molecules have been discussed, particularly in light of the controversy over the existence of the so-called second electronic state.
