다양한 조건에 따른 주철 소재의 마찰/마모 특성에 관한 연구 (Investigation of Friction and Wear Characteristics of Cast Iron Material Under Various Conditions)

  • 주철은 산업현장에서 중장비나 철도차량 등과 같은 다양한 기계장치의 주재료로 널리 사용된다. 이러한 기계장치의 운전 성능은 접촉 특성에 따라 크게 좌우되며 이를 개선시키기 위한 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 모래와 알루미나 입자가 주철의 마찰/마모 특성에 미치는 영향에 대해 다양한 조건에서의 미끄럼 실험을 통해 규명하였다. 입자의 크기 및 시편 온도 등을 변수로 하여 스틸 볼이 pin 으로 장착된 pin-on-reciprocator 방식의 트라이보테스터를 사용하여 실험을 진행하였다. 주사전자현미경(Scanning Electron Microscope), confocal microscope 와 3d profiler 를 이용해서 주철 시편과 스틸 볼의 마모 표면을 관찰하고 마모량을 정량적으로 측정하여 마모 특성을 파악하였다. 실험 결과 주철의 마찰/마모 특성은 입자 주입에 의해 크게 달라짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 주철 시편에 가해준 온도에 따라 마찰/마모 특성이 크게 달라지는 것을 확인하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 산업에서 주철 재료의 트라이볼로지 특성을 이해하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

DLC박막을 코팅한 초경공구의 Al합금에 대한 절삭성능 향상 (Improvement of Cutting Performance of DLC Coated WC against Al Alloy)

  • Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings could be good candidates as solid lubricants for cutting tools in dry machining of aluminum alloy. In this work, DLC thin films were produced as a friction reduction coating for WC-Co insert tip using the plasma immersion ion beam deposition (PIIED) technique. DLC coatings were also coated on $Al_2O_3$ specimens and high temperature wear tested up to $400^{\circ}C$ in dry air to observe the survivability of the DLC coating in simulated severe cutting conditions using a pin-on-disc tribotester with Hertzian contact stress of 1.3GPa. It showed reduced friction coefficients of minimum 0.02 up to $400^{\circ}C$. And cutting performance of DLC coated WC-Co insert tips to Al 6061 alloy were conducted in a high speed machining center. The main problems of built-up edge formation in aluminum machining are drastically reduced with improved surface roughness. The improvements were mainly related to the low friction coefficient of DLC to Al alloy and the anti-adhesion of Al alloy to WE due to the inertness of DLC.

혼합 자기 조립 단분자막의 마이크로/나노 응착 및 마찰 특성 (Micro/Nano Adhesion and Friction Properties of Mixed Self-assembled Monolayer)

  • Micro/nano adhesion and friction properties of mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with different chain length for MEMS application were experimentally studied. Many kinds of SAM having different spacer chains(C6, C10 and C18) and their mixtures (1:1) were deposited onto Si-wafer, where the deposited SAM resulted in the hydrophobic nature. The adhesion and friction properties between tip and SAM surfaces under nano scale applied load were measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and under micro scale applied load were measured using ball-on-flat type micro-tribotester. Surface roughness and water contact angles were measured with SPM (scanning probe microscope) and contact anglemeter. Results showed that water contact angles of mixed SAMs were similar to those of pure SAMs. The morphology of coating surface was roughened as mixing of SAM. Nano adhesion and nano friction decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length and mixing of SAM. Micro friction was decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length, but micro friction of mixed SAM showed the value between pure SAMs. Nano adhesion and friction mechanism of mixed SAM was proposed in a view of stiffness of spacer chain modified chemically and topographically.

나노 윤활유를 이용한 압축기 습동부 재질의 경도에 따른 윤활특성 평가 (Lubrication Characteristics of Nano-oil with Different Surface Hardness of Sliding Members)

  • In this study, lubrication characteristics of sliding members were compared with the change of the hardness of friction surfaces and the application of nano-oil. The materials of the specimens were gray cast iron (AISI 35, AISI 60) and nickel chromium molybdenum steel (AISI 4320). The Friction coefficients and the temperature variations of on the frictional surfaces were measured by disk-on-disk tribotester under the condition of fixed rotating speed. The friction surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the results, the friction coefficients of the disk surface were increased as hardness difference was increased. The friction coefficient lubricated in nano-oil was less than mineral oil. This is because a spherical nano particle plays a tiny ball bearing between the frictional surfaces, improved the lubrication characteristics.

Comparison of Tribological Characteristics of ZnO Coatings Prepared by Sputtering and Sol-gel Methods

  • In this work the tribological characteristics were compared between ZnO coatings on glass substrate prepared by sputtering and sol-gel methods. In order to assess the effects of processing method on the tribological characteristics, the friction and wear properties of the coatings were measured by using a reciprocating type of micro-tribotester. The sputtered ZnO coatings were prepared on a glass substrate at room temperature, $150^{\circ}$, and $300^{\circ}$. The ZnO coatings prepared by sol-gel method were heat-treated in air atmosphere at $550^{\circ}$ for one hour. The crystal structure and surface morphology of the coatings were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), respectively. The experimental results showed that overall the sputtered coatings exhibited better friction and wear properties than coatings prepared by sol-gel method. The sputtered coating grown at room temperature had a relatively low friction coefficient of 0.14 and superior wear resistance compared with the other coatings. Nevertheless, sol-gel method of coating ZnO on glass is beneficial for economical coating of a large surface area.

다상 금속간 화합물의 내마모 및 내산화 특성 (Wear and Oxidation Charateristics of Two Phase Intermetallic Compounds)

  • The wear and oxidation resistance of two phase nickel aluminides was investigated. Wear tests of various heat-treated specimens at room temperature and at $500^{\circ}C$ were performed under no lubricant condition in air by using a ball-on-disk type tribotester. Isothermal oxidation tests were made at $1100^{\circ}C$ in air flowing at the rate of 70cc/min and at $1000^{\circ}C$ in air by using TGA. Experimental results from wear tests showed that nickel aluminide with a higher content of Al had an improved wear resistance at both temperatures. Also the examination of the wear tracks after wear test at both room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$ indicated that regardless of the alloy compositions the wear tracks of the two phase nickel aluminides showed an abrasive type wear The improved oxidation resistance observed in the Ni-34at%Al alloy could to be attributed to the microstructural difference between the aluminides. An accelerated oxidation along the thin layer of $Ni_3AL$ along the grain boundary observed in the microstructure of the Ni-32at%Al aluminide could be attributed to the poor oxidation resistance.

  • $CrN_x$ films were deposited on SKD61 and S45C by cathodic arc ion plating process. In this study, the microstructure, microhardness, a hesion, wear and corrosion properties of the CrNx films were studied for various nitrogen partial pressures and the results were compared with those from the electroplated hard Cr. The crystal structure of the films was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Wear tests were performed under no lubricant condition at atmosphere by ball-on-disc type tribotester. Corrosion resistance of the films were studied by electrochemical corrosion test, measuring current demsity-potential curves. The results indicated that the $CrN_x$ films formed using ion plation method showed higer hardness and lower current density, friction coefficient than electroplated hard Cr. Consequently, the application of the CrNx coationgs by ion plating which is free of environmental pollution, is expected to improve lifetime of components in industrial practice.

  • An NAO friction material (low-steel type) containing 15 ingredients was investigated to study the role of transfer film on the friction characteristics. The friction material specimens with extra 100% of each ingredient were tested using a pad-on-disk type tribotester. A non-destructive method of measuring the transfer film was developed by considering the electric resistance of the transfer film. Results showed that solid lubricants and iron powder assisted transfer film formation on the rotor surface. Average friction coefficient was independent of transfer film thickness in this experiment. On the other hand, the thick transfer film on the rotor surface reduced the amplitude of friction oscillation under temperature conditions ( 250$^{\circ}C$) that transfer film forms.

상대재료의 표면거칠기에 따른 PTFE와 UHMWPE의 마찰 및 마멸 특성 (Effect of Surface Roughness of Counterface on Tribological Characteristics of PTFE and UHMWPE)

  • Understanding of the tribological characteristics of polytetrafluoroethylen (PTFE) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is crucial for their applications such as bearing and total joint replacement. In this work, the effect of the surface roughness of carbon steel on the tribological behaviors of PTFE and UHMWPE was experimentally investigated by using block-on-ring tribotester with friction force monitoring capability. It was found that that the amount of material transfer layers of PTFE formed on the carbon steel was significantly larger than those of UHMWPE, which was responsible the lower friction coefficient of PTFE. It was also concluded that the effect of surface roughness of carbon steel on the friction coefficient of UHMWPE was more significant than that of PTFE. For UHMWPE, it was found that the effect of surface roughness of counterface was varied with respect to applied normal force and sliding as well. Based on Archard's wear law, the wear coefficient of PTFE and UHMWPE was calculated to be $3{\times}10^{-5}$ ~ $8{\times}10^{-5}$ and $7{\times}10^{-6}$ ~ $2{\times}10^{-5}$, respectively.
