Effect of Environment on the Tribological Behavior of Si-incorporated Diamond-like Carbon Films (실리콘이 첨가된 다이아몬드상 카본 필름의 트라이볼로지적 특성에 미치는 환경변화의 영향)

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of environment on the tribological behavior of Si-incorporated diamond-like carbon(Si-DLC) film slid on a steel ball. The films were deposited on Si(100) wafers by a radio-frequency glow discharge of mixtures of benzene and dilute silane gases. Experiments using a ball-on-disk test-rig was performed in vacuum, dry air and ambient air conditions. It was observed that coefficient of friction decreased as the environment changed from vacuum, to dry air. Chemical analyses of debris suggested that low and stable friction is closely related to the formation of silicon-rich oxide debris and the rolling action.

  • Nano-wear behavior of amorphous carbon films was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy. The a-C films are deposited on Si(100) substrate by DC magnetron sputtering method. The influences of different surface roughness on the nano-wear are investigated. Nano-wear tests were carried out using a very sharp diamond coated tip. Its spring constant was 1.6 N/m and radius of curvature was 110 nm. Normal force used in the wear tests ranged 0 to 400 nN. It was found that surface depression occurred during scratching because of plastic deformation and abrasive wear (cutting St ploughing). Wear depth increased linearly with normal force. Changing the surface roughness variables according to the bias pulse control, the less surface roughness decreased the wear depth. The thickness did not affect the wear resistance.

  • Disc brakes and brake linings are part of the braking system in automobiles; this system works due to the braking power between the disc and pad. Vehicle braking systems have complex environments due to the geometry of the disk and pad, the material properties, the braking conditions, etc. Braking energy is converted into thermal energy during the braking process, due to the frictional heat between the disc brake and pad. This heat is changed to a heat flux, which affects the thermal stress of the disc. The purpose of this study was to use the fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX to investigate the inner flow characteristics of the air and the heat transfer of the disc, and to analyze the effects on the thermal stress of the disc brake.

  • An internal friction model was developed to model the frictional behavior of automotive Constant Velocity (CV) joints by using the test data from an instrumented CV joint friction apparatus with actual driveshaft assemblies. Experiments were conduced under different realistic operating conditions of oscillatory speeds, CV joint articulation angles, lubrication, and torque. The experimental data were used to develop a physics-based semi-empirical CV joint internal friction coefficient model as a function of different CV Joint operating parameters. It was found that the proposed friction model captures the experimental results well not only the static behavior of friction coefficient, but also the dynamic friction terms, which is the main source of force that causes vehicle vibration problems.

Reciprocating Wear Test of AISI 52100 Bearing Steel in h-BN-based Aqueous Lubricants

  • In this study, reciprocating wear tests are performed on AISI 52100 bearing steel to investigate its tribological behavior in a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) water solution. The h-BN-based aqueous lubricant is prepared using an atoxic procedure called ultrasonic sonication in pure water. Ball-on-flat reciprocating sliding experiments are conducted, where the ball is slewed on a fixed flat at 50-㎛ displacement. The lubricating behavior of h-BN is compared with that of deionized (DI) water. Results show that the friction coefficient is higher in h-BN testing than that in DI tests, but the results are equalized as the friction coefficient reaches a stable level. Scanning electron microscopic images reveal significant material loss in the center and mild abrasion on the edge of the wear scar in h-BN tests. However, these effects are minor in DI water situations. The results of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy show that considerable oxidation occurs in the central zone of the wear scar in h-BN cases with strong adhesion and material removal. These findings reveal the importance of determining ideal circumstances that can tolerate material friction and wear.

  • Langmuir-Blodgett mono- and multilayer films from 2,4-heneicosanedione have been examined as lubrication coatings In the process of wear. Tribological properties of the films have been studied by atomic force microscopy and microtribometer. It has been observed that the wear resistance of silicon surface coated with OTS/LB multilayer system increased by several orders of magnitude compared to uncoated surfaces at low normal load. The results obtained suggest that the system constructed on silicon surface reduces surface energy, friction coefficient and increases life of substrate due to a possibility of LB film self-repairing during frictional contact.

  • The stress and displacement behavior analysis of an aluminum tube for an organic photo conductor drum has been presented using a finite element analysis technique by non-linear FEM program. The maximum displacement in the radial direction of OPC drum may directly affect to the quality of printed matter. Thus, the deformed profile of the aluminum tubes should be limited depending on the toner powder size and the contact rolling forces between an OPC drum and a paper. This paper recommends the critical loading of 400 Pa for the provided toner size, $8{\mu}m$ for excellent printed matters and long life of the toner cartridge.

  • Using a coupled thermal-mechanical analysis, the dynamic distortion of the ventilated disk brakes has been presented for a high-speed train. The offset ratio between the maximum and minimum values of the thermal distortions has been analyzed as a function of a braking number. The computed FEM results show that the offset rations in radial direction are much greater than those of circumferentially distorted components. This means that the axial distortions in radial direction may dominantly produce thermally caused wears and cracks at the rubbing surfaces.

  • Thermal distortion of non-contacting mechanical seals with inclined rubbing surfaces is affected by friction heat between seal ring and seal seat. The circulation fluid along the inclined rubbing surfaces maintains cooling friction heat and lubrication between the sealing surfaces of mechanical seal with an inclined surface. Mechanical seals with inclined sealing surfaces may be useful for reducing the frictional heating and power loss because of the introduction of cooling fluids to the sealing gap between seal ring and seal seat. From the FEM computed result shows that the thermal behavior and von Mises stress of sealing faces with an inclined angle 60 are much reduced in comparison of the conventional mechanical face seal with rectangular sealing surfaces.
