  • A new test rig is presented to measure friction losses at journal bearings in a reciprocating compressor. This rig consists of a test bearing, torque sensor, driving motor and loading parts especially for vertical shaft. Friction losses are obtained by measuring torque between motor and test bearing. The experiments are carried out at several rotational speeds and temperatures. The test results are presented and discussed.

  • Recently, the automotive industry is being developed rapidly. On this, a demand of high quality performancetestmachine is increased too. But it is progressive technology that must be combined hydraulic, mechanic and electronic technologies. To construct this system, the design of oil hydraulic circuit, interface skill between sensor and personal computer, data acquisition & display system and integrated control are very important skill. Moreover, reliable data is obtained with vacuum system and complex heat exchange system. Therefore, in this study, we designed a performancetestmachine by using above key technologies and we also made a integrated PC control system using personal computer which is more progressive and flexible method than PLC control.

  • The friction characteristics of phenolic resin and model friction materials were investigated with the content of hexamethylenetetamine (HEXA). At 10 wt.% of HEXA, the phenolic resin and model friction materials showed the most stable friction coeffcient in constant temperature test at various test conditions because of its good thermal stability and proper curing reaction. It was found from constant interval test in mild condition that the friction coeffcients of friction materials cured with 10 wt.% of HEXA was the highest and stable values in the whole range of braking operations. However, at the severe condition in constant interval test, the friction coefficient of friction materials cured with 10 wt.% to of HEXA was lowered and as the number of braking operation increased, the values became stable. In order to obtain the thormal stable friction materials, the content of HEXA from 5 to 10 wt.% could be recommended.

  • The fretting wear behaviour of Zircaloy-4 tube used as the fuel rod cladding in PWR nuclear power plants has been investigated at the different test environment, in light water and in air as a function of slip amplitude, normal load, test duration and frequency. Zircaloy-4 tubes were used for both of oscillating and stationary specimens. A fretting wear tester was designed to be suitable for this fretting test. The wear volume and specific wear rate of Zircaloy-4 tube in water was greater than those in air under various slip amplitude. Delaminates and surface cracks were observed at low slip amplitude and high load of fretting test in water, but the traces of adhesion and plowing were observed at and above 200 Um. The water accelerates the wear of Zircaloy-4 tube at lower slip amplitude in fretting.

  • Frictional characteristics with the change of loading method and normal stiffness at dry sliding surfaces were experimentally and theoretically evaluated in this study. For the study, a ball-on-disk typed test rig was built and implemented, which allowed a proper selection of loading mechanism and normal stiffness of the test rig. Loading method were varied from dead weight to pneumatic cylinder and spring loading, and the normal stiffness was varied by a spring of different stiffness. Test results showed that frictional characteristics at various loading methods were different even though the operating variables were the same. Discrepancy in the frictional characteristics, such as coefficient of friction and fluctuation in the normal load, were explained by the change in dynamic parameters of the test rigs. Results also showed that coefficient of friction, which defines as a ratio of frictional force divided a normal load, could be differently evaluated in the calculation when fluctuation in the normal load was significant.

  • This paper presents the braking friction and wears on the rubbing surfaces of a friction pad-disk brake. In this study, four friction disk specimens are sampled from unused and used disks in which are taken from the disk brake system when the friction induced vibration and noise problems have been occurred during a braking period at a running period of 10,000 km, 20,000 km, and 30,000 km in random. The experimental results indicate that the tribological characteristics of an unused disk brake shows equal and stable as a friction coefficient and temperature distributions during a braking friction/wear test period including a total friction mode from the start to running periods. But the used disk brake shows unstable and uneven friction modes between an outside and inside rubbing surfaces of a disk brake in terms of a friction coefficient and wears. This may lead to a friction induced friction vibration and noise problems of a used disk brake.

  • New method and device for the on-line measurement of soot concentration in a diesel engine oil are proposed, where the measurement principle is based mainly on attenuated internal total reflection. Various laboratory tests of the detector were performed mainly with carbon black particles of different contamination levels. It was found that the proposed detector could be well used to monitor oil deterioration due to soot contamination. Operational range of the detector was found from 0 to 5 mass percentage of soot content. Test results with water and fuel dilution showed that these effects were not remarkable. However, adsorption of carbon black particles to a measurement surface was considered to be a critical problem in the new detector. Effects of particle deposition onto the interface was experimentally evaluated with the oil temperature and turbulence and discussed throughout this work.

  • Abstract : Nano/micro-scale friction properties were investigated on Si (100) and three self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) (PFOTC, DMDM, DPDM) coated on Si-wafer by chemical vapor deposition technique. Experiments were conducted at ambient temperature(24$pm$1$circ$C) and humidity(45$pm$5%). Friction at nano-scale was measured using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in the range of 0-40nN normal loads. In both Si-wafer and SAMs, friction increased linearly as a function of applied normal load. Results showed that friction was affected by the inherent adhesion in Ssi-wafer, and in the case of SAMs the physical/chemical structures had a major influence. Coefficient of friction of these test samples at the micro-scale was also energies. In order to study the effect of contact area on coefficient of friction at the micro-scale, friction was measured for Si-wafer and DPDM against Soda Lime balls (Duke Scientiffic Corporation) of different radii (0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1 mm) at different applied normal loads (1500, 3000 and 4800 mN). Results showed that Si-wafer had higher coefficient of friction than DPDM. Further, unlike that in the case of DPDM, friction in Si-wafer was severely influenced by its wear. SEM evidences showed that solid-solid adhesion was the wear mechanism in Si-wafer.

  • In this study, the performance of foil thrust bearings was investigated by performing bearing take-off and load capacity tests, using an in-house designed and manufactured vertical bearing test rig. The mean take-off rotational speed and maximum load capacity of the bearing specimen were ~18,000 rpm and ~80 kPa, respectively. The vertical bearing test rig was observed to yield higher coefficients of friction and frictional torques than a horizontal bearing test rig under identical test conditions. This was a result of its structural characteristics, in that the bearing specimen is placed atop the thrust runner, which keeps it from being separated from the runner after the bearing take-off. In addition, bearing take-off was observed at a higher runner rotational speed as this structure keeps air from flowing between the top foil and runner surfaces, which requires a higher runner speed. The parallel alignment between the bearing specimen and runner surfaces can be maintained within a certain range more easily in a vertical test rig than in a horizontal test rig. Because of these advantages, Korean Industrial Standard, KS B 2060, recommends a vertical bearing test rig as the standard test device for foil thrust bearings.

  • The damage of cam/tappet surface is one of the major reasons for energy loss in an I.C. engine. High friction causes the accelerated wear of the cam/tappet surfaces which in turn changes the valve opening/closing timing. During the accelerated test evidence of both rolling fatigue and sliding abrasive wear could be found. Based on the results of the accelerated test, a scheme was devised to decrease tappet wear. Wear reduction of the tappet was achieved by using undulated surface topography in the tappet center region. The wear reduction is achieved by trapping of the wear particles in the undulations as well as by increasing the supply of lubricant to the sliding interface.
