A resin bonded copper-graphite brush was investigated to evaluate the characteristics electrical signal transmission through a sliding contact as a function of the relative amount of graphite and copper in the brush. Particular attention was given to the correlation between electrical signal fluctuation and tribological properties in an electrical sliding contact system. A ring-on-block type tribotester was used for this experiment and the ring was made from pure copper. Results showed that a copper-graphite brush at a particular composition range exhibited the most stable frictional behavior with a minimum voltage drop. The amount of voltage drop at the friction interface was affected by the surface roughness, transfer film formation at the friction interface, and the real area of contact. Microscopic observations and the surface analysis showed a good agreement with the results from this experiment. The results also indicated that the electrical signal flunctuation was directly associated with the oscillation of the coefficient of friction during sliding by nanoscale variation of contacts at the friction interface.

Optimum tribological performance of the head/disk system is critical in maintaining reliable data processing in a hard disk drive. Particularly, as the flying height of the slider continues to decrease with increasing recording density, frictional interaction between the slider and the disk need to be better understood. In this work the effect of reduced ambient pressure on the tribological behavior of the head/disk interface is presented. It is found that surface damage of the components can be accelerated by reducing the ambient pressure. This method may be utilized to assess slider/disk compatibility of newly developed systems in short time.
In metal cutting at the tool-chip interface, friction generates considerable amount of heat. Thus, the knowledge of wear properties of cutting tool material in high temperature has been as one of important factors in need of clarification. The authors presented the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel, fabricated by powder metallurgy, in room temperature in previous articles. The objective of this paper is to clarify the effects of temperature on its wear properties. Wear tests in sliding conditions under various temperatures have been conducted using the pin-on-disc type wear test machine. The results indicate that the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel in high temperature as well as in room temperature are excellent. It may be deduced that the oxide layer formed on worn surface at high temperature is stable enough to prevent wear due to the high temperature strength of its matrix.
The damage of cam/tappet surface is one of the major reasons for energy loss in an I.C. engine. High friction causes the accelerated wear of the cam/tappet surfaces which in turn changes the valve opening/closing timing. During the accelerated test evidence of both rolling fatigue and sliding abrasive wear could be found. Based on the results of the accelerated test, a scheme was devised to decrease tappet wear. Wear reduction of the tappet was achieved by using undulated surface topography in the tappet center region. The wear reduction is achieved by trapping of the wear particles in the undulations as well as by increasing the supply of lubricant to the sliding interface.
Generally not only the radial load but also the moment may be applied to the ball bearings for a shaft system. However it has been difficult to determine the static equivalent load because there is the radial static equivalent equation only for the axial and radial force on the bearings. In this paper, the same static equivalent radial load which makes the maximum contact force at the interface between the ball and groove as the applied radial force and moment generate is calculated under the condition that the radial force and the moment are applied to the bearings simultaneously. The relation between the static equivalent load and applied force is studied. Therefore the simple and effective equation for the static equivalent radial load of the radial load and moment is proposed for the deep groove ball bearings.
The thermal characteristics of a disk such as temperature distribution, thermal behaviors and thermal stress during a braking operation has been analyzed for a high-speed brake using the finite element method. The maximum stress for a pad loaded against a disk was occurred at the trailing and leading edges of the disk pad at the underlayer-backplate interface. The FEM results indicate that the thermal characteristics of the spot type pad shows good performance compared with those of the flat type pad. Thus, the spot type pad in brake system may be recommended for the high-speed train system.
New method and device for the on-line measurement of soot concentration in a diesel engine oil are proposed, where the measurement principle is based mainly on attenuated internal total reflection. The detector were evaluated in various ranges of contaminated oils by carbon black particles. It was found that the proposed detector could be well used to monitor the oil deterioration due to soot contamination. Operational range of the detector was found from 0 to 5 mass percentage of soot content. Test results with water and fuel dilution showed that these effects were not remarkable. However, adsorption of carbon black particles onto the measurement surface was considered to be a critical problem of the detector. Effects of particle deposition on the interface was experimentally evaluated with the oil temperature and flow turbulence and discussed throughout this work.
Thin films and coating technologies are used for an enormous and diverse set of application including mechanical and automotive components. Many of these applications require the various properties which can be used for decreasing wear, friction and cost, and increasing the long life. The relationship between the load and the stress is usually nonlinear. The material is often apt to deform plastically under the low loads. Numerical method may be used for some simple problems of the coating. If the property of coating and base materials are inhomogeneous and the geometry is complex, the numerical method may be recommended. In this paper, the contact normal stress of the coating layer has been solved using finite element method.
Recently, the automotive industry is being developed rapidly. On this, a demand of high quality performancetestmachine is increased too. But it is progressive technology that must be combined hydraulic, mechanic and electronic technologies. To construct this system, the design of oil hydraulic circuit, interface skill between sensor and personal computer, data acquisition & display system and integrated control are very important skill. Moreover, reliable data is obtained with vacuum system and complex heat exchange system. Therefore, in this study, we designed a performancetestmachine by using above key technologies and we also made a integrated PC control system using personal computer which is more progressive and flexible method than PLC control.
The thermal behaviors of disk-pad braking models has been analyzed for a high-speed train brake system using the coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The temperature distribution, thermal distortion, and contact stress in the disk-pads contact model have been investigated as functions of the convective heat transfer rate. The FEM results indicate that multiple spot type pads show more stabilized thermal characteristics compared with those of the flat type pads for the increased convective heat transfer rate. The maximum contact stress for a friction pad loaded against a rubbing disk was occurred on the edge of the pad at the disk-pad interface.
