  • Flow characteristics of differential pressure flow meters which have a shape of triangular separate bar (TSB) was investigated according to the machining conditions in pressure tapping holes. Diameter of the pressure taping holes is either 1.0 mm or 1.5 mm. Also, number of the pressure tapping holes are drilled either 9 or 17. The mass flow rate of the TSB flow meters are calibrated with a laminar flow meter by connecting them in line. The mass flow rate in the TSB flow meters are plotted with a non-dimensional parameter H which includes the gas temperature, exhaust gas pressure and differential pressure at the flow meters. An empirical correlation between the mass flow rate at the TSB flow meter and the non-dimensional parameter H was obtained. The empirical correlation showed highly linear relationship between the mass flow rate and the non-dimensional parameter H. The hole size of the pressure tapping holes has a bigger effect on the flow rate than the number of the tapping holes.

  • A fluid in an enclosure can be heated by electric heating, chemical reaction, or fission heat. In order to remove the volumetric heat of the fluid, the walls surrounding the enclosure must be cooled. In this case, a natural convection occurs in the pool of the fluid, and it has a dominant role in heat transfer to the surrounding walls. It can augment the heat transfer rates tens to hundreds times larger than conductive heat transfer. The heat transfer by a natural convection in a regular shape such as a square cavity or semi-circular pool has been studied experimentally and numerically for many years. A pool of an inverted triangular shape with 10 degree inclined bottom walls has a good cooling performance because of enhanced boiling critical heat flux (CHF) compared to horizontal downward surface. The coolability of the pool is determined by comparing the thermal load from the pool and the maximum heat flux removable by cooling mechanism such as radiative or boiling heat transfer on the pool boundaries. In order to evaluate the pool coolability, it is important to correctly expect the thermal load by a natural convection heat transfer of the pool. In this study, turbulence models with modifications for buoyancy effect were validated for unsteady natural convections by volumetric heating. And natural convection in the triangular pool was evaluated by using the models.

  • The three dimensional(3D) shape reconstruction from two dimensional(2D) cross-sections can be completed through three main phases : the input compilation, the triangular grid formation, and the smooth surface construction. In the input compilation phase, the cross-sections are analyzed to exctract the input data required for the shape reconstruction. This data includes the number of polygonized contours per cross-section and the vertices defining each polygonized contour. In the triangular grid formation phase, a triangular grid, leading to a polyhedral approximations, is constructed by extracting all the information concerning contour links between two adjacent cross- sections and then performing the appropriate triangulation procedure for each contour link. In the smooth surface construction phase, a smooth composite surface interpolating all vertices on the triangular grid is constructed. Both the smooth surface and the polyhedral approximation can be used as reconstructed models of the object. This paper proposes a new method for reconstructing the geometric model of a 3D objdect from a sequence of planar contours representing 2D cross-sections of the objdect. The method includes the triangular grid formation algorithms for contour closing, one-to-one branching, and one-to-many braanching, and many-to-many branching. The shape reconstruction method has been implemented on a SUN workstation in C.

  • Computing the rotation-invariant distance between image time-series is a time-consuming process that incurs a lot of Euclidean distances for all possible rotations. In this paper we propose an innovative solution that significantly reduces the number of Euclidean distances using the triangular inequality. To this end, we first present the notion of self rotation distance and show that, by using the self rotation distance with the triangular inequality, we can prune many unnecessary distance computations. We next present that only one self-rotation is enough for all self-rotation distances required. Experimental results show that our self rotation distance-based methods outperform the existing methods by up to an order of magnitude.

  • Two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted at a low Reynolds number Re = 100 to investigate the near wake of three identical circular cylinders that are arranged in an equilateral triangular configuration. The incident angle of the three-cylinder configuration with respect to incoming flow is varied from θ = 0° to 60°, while the spacing between adjacent cylinders (L) covers a wide range of L/D = 1.25-7.0, where D is diameter of the cylinder. Typical flow structures in the near wake of the three-cylinder configuration are identified, including a single Karman vortex street, bistable flip-flopping near wake, anti-phase and/or in-phase vortex shedding, shear layer reattachment, and vortex impingement, depending on the configuration (L/D, θ). The behavior of Strouhal number (St) is discussed in detail, echoing the distinct structures of near wake. Furthermore, fluid forces on the individual cylinders are examined, which, though highly depending on (L/D, θ), exhibit a close correlation to the near wake behavior.

  • In the analysis of the 3 dimensional plate structures by the finite element method, the triangular elements are generally used for the global stiffness matrix of the analyzed system. But the triangular elements of the plates have some problems in the process of formulation and in the precision of analysis. The formulation of the finite element method to analyze 3 dimensional plate structures using quadrilateral elements is presented in this paper. The degree of freedom off nodal point is 6, that is, the displacements in the direction off-y-z is and the rotations about x-y-z axis and then the degree of freedom off element is 24. For the comparison of the analysis using triangular elements and quadrilateral elements, the rectangular plates subjected to the uniform load and a concentrated load on the centroid of the plate, for which the theoretical solutions have been obtained, are analyzed. The calculated deflections of the rectangular plates using the finite element method by the triangular elements and the quadrilateral elements are also compared with the deflections of the plates calculated by theoretical solutions. The defections of the rectangular plates calculated by the finite element method using the quadrilateral elements are closer to the theoretical solutions than the defections calculated by the finite element method using the triangular elements. The deflection of the centroid of plate, calculated by the finite element method, converges to that of theoretical solution as the number of elements is increased. This convergence is much more rapid for the case of using the quakrilateral elements than fir the case of using triangular elements.

  • STL which is used in Rapid Prototyping is composed of a lot of triangular facets. The number of triangles and the shapes of these triangles determine the quality of STL. Therefore, proper algorithm is necessary to enhance the quality of triangular patch. In this paper we used the Delaunay triangulation method to apply to following processes. 1) On processing for reducing sharp triangles which cause errors on intersection. 2) On processing for connecting two or more collinear edges. 3) On processing for deleting unnecessarily inserted points in coplanar polygon.

  • The results of fuzzy linear regression are very sensitive to irregular data. When this points exist in a set of data, a fuzzy linear regression model can be incorrectly interpreted. The purpose of this paper is to detect irregular data and to propose robust fuzzy linear regression based on M-estimators with triangular fuzzy regression coefficients for crisp input-output data. Numerical example shows that irregular data can be detected by using the residuals based on M-estimators, and the proposed robust fuzzy linear regression is very resistant to this points.

  • For fast capacitance computation, a simple mesh refinement technique on MLFMA(Multi-Level Fast Multipole Algorithm) is proposed The triangular meshes are refined mainly in the area which has heavy charge density. The technique is applied to the capacitance extraction of three dimensional conductors. The results show good convergence with comparable accuracy. An adaptive technique concerned with MLFMA is useful to reduce computation time and the number of elements without additional computational efforts in large three dimensional problems.
