Extracts of adult worker bodies of Vespa simillima in 2 % NaCl or acidified methanol were administered orally to mice for 70 days. Following this period, memory at one-day and one-month periods, and the effects on scopolamine-induced amnesia were examined using a step-through passive avoidance task. Changes in MK-801-induced disability after 8 days of training, and in memory one month after the trial were also assessed. Mice treated with the 2% NaCl extract showed significant improvement in memory in the behavioral tests one month after the trial, whereas mice receiving the extract in acidified methanol, did not differ from the controls in any trial. The results inidicate that Vespa simillima contains substances acting favorably on the cerebral functions of mammals.
Korean High-Speed Train (350km/h), composed of 2 power cars, 2 motorized car and 3 trailer cars, has been developed and is under trial test. To verify the design requirements for the functions and traction performances of the train, KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) decided to evaluate traction performances of the train during trial test. For this purpose, torque, velocity, voltage and current must be measured. KRRI has developed a measurement system that can measure vast and various signals effectively. In this paper, we introduce traction performances of Korean High-Speed Train. The traction measurement items are focused on the verification of motor block performances. Motor block consists of 2 motors. By this test, we verified traction performances of Korean High-Speed Train.
Neural network models, also known as connectionist models or PDP models, simulate some functions of the brain and may promise to give insight in understanding the cognitive brain functions. The models composed of neuron-like elements that are linked into circuits can learn and adapt to its environment in a trial and error fashion. In this article, the history and principles of the neural network modeling are briefly reviewed, and its applications to psychiatry are discussed.
In this paper the second order semi-discrete and full dis-crete generalized difference schemes for one dimensional parabolic equa-tions are constructed and the optimal order $H^1$ , $L^2$ error estimates and superconvergence results in TEX>$H^1$ are obtained. The results in this paper perfect the theory of generalized difference methods.
The unsymmetric finite element formulation has been proposed recently to improve predictions from distorted finite elements. Studies have also shown that this special formulation using parametric functions for the test functions and metric functions for the trial functions works surprisingly well because the former satisfy the continuity conditions while the latter ensure that the stress representation during finite element computation can retrieve in a best-fit manner, the actual variation of stress in the metric space. However, a question that remained was whether the unsymmetric formulation was variationally correct. Here we determine that it is not, using the simplest possible element to amplify the principles.

In this paper, an unifying design algorithm is presented for efficient digital implementation of continuous PID controller using general discrete orthogonal functions. The proposed algorithm is an algebraic method to determine controller parameters, which can unify controller design procedures divided into three ways. A set of linear equations for the controller design are derived from simple algebraic transformation based on general discrete orthogonal functions. By solving these equations, all of the controller parameters can be determined directly and simultaneously, which thus makes the design procedure systematic and straightforward. It does not involve any trial and error procedure, hence the difficulty of conventional approach can be avoided. The simulation results and discussions are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
A local radial point interpolation method (LRPIM) based on local residual formulation is presented and applied to solid mechanics in this paper. In LRPIM, the trial function is constructed by the radial point interpolation method (PIM) and establishes discrete equations through a local residual formulation, which can be carried out nodes by nodes. Therefore, element connectivity for trial function and background mesh for integration is not necessary. Radial PIM is used for interpolation so that singularity in polynomial PIM may be avoided. Essential boundary conditions can be imposed by a straightforward and effective manner due to its Delta properties. Moreover, the approximation quality of the radial PIM is evaluated by the surface fitting of given functions. Numerical performance for this LRPIM method is further studied through several numerical examples of solid mechanics.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux(LPR) is one firm of the gastroesophageal reflux diseases(GERD). It is known to cause various kinds of otolaryngologic symptoms such as hoarseness, foreign body sensation in throat, chronic throat clearing, chronic cough, etc. Disease entities diagnosed by otolaryngologists as posterior laryngitis, globus pharyngeus should be suspected as LPR-related diseases. In this multi-center trial, we tried to evaluate the effect of cisapride(10mg tid) on LPR-related symptoms as the part I study(CIS-KOR-051) in 19 centers, and as the part II study(CIS-KOR-052) comparative evaluation of effect between cisapride(10mg tid) and ranitidine(150mg bid) on LPR-related symptoms in 4 centers. In part I study, efficacy of cisapride on LPR-related symptoms after 4 weeks was 53.5% and that of after 8weeks was 77.9% in per protocol(PPA) analysis group. In part II study, efficacy of the cisapride was much better than that of ranitidine not only from 8 weeks trial(p<0.001) but also from 4 weeks trial(p<0.021) in PPA group. In the multiple logistic regression analysis among the parameters which affect the efficacy of the treatment, cisapride prescribed group showed 10 times greater than that of ranitidine prescribed group(p<0.0001, Odds ratio : 10) in PPA group. LPR was proved by 24Hr double probe pHmetry in 13 patients out of 19 patients tested(68.4%). Thus these results indicated that inducing the improvement of motility functions could affect the amelioration of the LPR-related symptoms much better than reducing acid secretion from the stomach. And maybe it suggests that LPR-related symptoms mainly developed by the reduced motility functions of the esophagus and/or delayed gastric emptying.

The storage function model (SFM) has been used for the flood forecasting in Korea. The SFM has a simple calculation process and it is known that the model is more reasonable than linear model because it considers non-linearity of flood runoff. However, the determination of parameters is very difficult. In general, the trial and error method which is an manual calibration by the decision of a model manager. This study calibrated the parameters by the trial and error method and optimization technique. The calibrated parameters were compared with the representative parameters which are used in the Flood Control Centers in Korea. Also, the evaluation indexes on objective functions and calibration methods for the comparative analysis of simulation efficiency. As a result, the Genetic Algorithm showed the smallest variation in objective functions and, in this study, it is known that the objective function of SSR (Sum of Squared of Residual) is the best one for the flood forecasting.
