  • The object of this study was to evaluate the effect of gibberellins (GA) pasting on the bourse shoot, and not just on the fruit characteristics but also on the quality, of Niitaka pear (Pyrus pyryfolia L). The fruit stalk was treated with GA (control, 25mg/fruit stalk) 35 days after reaching full bloom. In the GA-treated tree, the occurrence of abnormal bourse shoot (52.5%) increased, and the spur bud and flower number decreased. The diameter of the GA-paste-treated fruit increased during the pear growth period with GA treatment. The diameter, length, and weight of the GA-paste-treated fruit increased at harvest time, but the hardness was lower than that of the control. The differences in soluble solid, acidity, and fruit color between the control and the GA-paste-treated fruit were not significant. Post-harvest, during the storage period, the hardness of the GA-paste-treated fruit was lower than that of the control, and its weight loss ratio was higher than that of the control on the $60^{th}$ days of storage.

  • This study was conducted for 3 years in an apple orchard to investigate the efficacy of the glufosinate-ammonium (GFA) SL for weed control in comparison to non-woven fabric mulch, sod culture and machinery cutting treatments. Glufosinate-ammonium SL 18% was applied with 2 to 3 times, and the extents of injury caused by the different weed control methods were also investigated during the 3 years. The highest level of weed control was obtained by glufosinate-ammonium 3 times spray (98.7%), followed by machinery cutting (95.1%), glufosinate-ammonium 2 times spray (81.5%) and natural sod culture (5.8%). Amounts of fruit production in three times application of glufosinate-ammonium 540 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, twice application of GFA, machinery cutting, non-woven fabric processing, sod culture and untreated control were 27.2, 26.2, 25.3, 24.1, 20.4 and 13.3 kg, respectively. There was no toxicity symptom of glufosinate-ammonium on the whole tree such as fruit, bud, trunk, branch and flower during the 3 years.

  • Trellising is an important cultural practice that affects grape quality and yield. Some grape cultivars require different trellising under different climate and soil conditions. To find suitable trellis conditions for grape cultivar 'Cheongsoo', we measured growth and fruit characteristics with three different trellis systems: curtain, Geneva double curtain (GDC), and modified T. The maximum light exposure of clusters in the curtain, GDC, modified T trellis systems was 670, 1,654, and $1,649{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively. However, there was no difference in air temperature among the three trellis systems. Net $CO_2$ assimilation rate at $1,500{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ light intensity was 13.4, 13.7, and $8.7{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ in curtain, GDC, and modified T trellis systems, respectively. Trunk cross section area (TCSA) and bud burst rate were not significantly different among the three systems. Shoot number was 31.3, 47.0, and 37.0 in curtain, GDC, and modified T trellis systems, respectively. The shoot length was higher (243.9 cm) in the modified T trellis system than in the single curtain (171.1 cm) and GDC (151.5 cm) systems. Interior leaf number and leaf layer number were higher in the GDC system, in which there are two primary branches, in comparison to the modified T and curtain systems, which utilize one primary branch. Primary leaf area and lateral leaf area were significantly higher in the modified T trellis system in comparison to the GDC system. Berry weight, length and diameter, and total soluble solids were not significantly different among the three trellis systems. However, cluster weight and cluster number per tree were significantly higher in GDC. Titratable acidity was significantly lower in GDC. Collectively, our data suggest that the GDC trellis system is preferable for grape 'Cheongsoo' to maintain fruit quality and quantity in Korea.

  • Adventitious buds were produced from the cultures of mature zygotic embryos of Larix kaempferi with the highest frequency in Quoirin & Lepoivre (LP) medium containing 1.0 mg/L zeatin (76.1%). The effective treatments for inducing adventitious shoots growth above 2 mm were shown in Litvay (LM) medium with 0.5 mg/L zeatin (75.2%) or LP medium with 2.0 mg/L zeatin (70.2%), respectively. In experiment with half strength salts medium for induction of the adventitious buds, the effective treatments were obtained from 1/2LP medium with 1.0 (83.3%) or 2.0 mg/L (81.7%) zeatin, respectively. However, the best adventitious shoot growth more than 2 mm appeared in 1/2LM medium with 1.0 mg/L zeatin (66.7%). In experiment of subsequent treatment with various cytokinins for induction of the adventitious buds, the best one (52.9%) was obtained from 1.0 mg/L zeatin for 2weeks, and then subcultured to the medium with 1.0 mg/L thidiazuron (TDZ). The effect of ethylene synergist or inhibitor on adventitious buds induction was examined. The highest rate (34.6%) of adventitious buds marked from the treatments of 1.0 mg/L zeatin+2.0 mg/L MGBG (methylglyoxal bis-[guanylhydrazone]). And the highest no. of adventitious buds(1.5/explant) was shown in the medium with 1.0 mg/L zeatin+2.0 mg/L $CoCl_2$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of elevated temperatures on the growth and physiological responses of peach 'Mihong' (Prunus persica). We simulated three different temperature conditions in the sunlight phytotron rooms from April 25 to July 5, 2019; Control (average temperature in normal years in Jeonju city), +3.4℃ treatment (expecting temperature in mid-21st century), +5.7℃ treatment (expecting temperature in late 21st century). The shoot numbers and lengths were increased while the temperature was increased, but the leaf areas were not statistically different. The harvest dates were July 1, June 24 and 21 at the control, +3.4℃, and +5.7℃, respectively. The fruit weights were increased at +3.4℃ but decreased at +5.7℃ compared to the control. The tree yield was the highest in the +3.4℃ (2,898g), followed by the control (2,746g) and the +5.7℃ (2,404g). These are related to the result that the average of maximum photosynthesis rate at 3.4℃ (14.93μmol·CO2·m-2·s-1) was higher than those at the control (13.79μmol·CO2·m-2·s-1) and +5.7℃ (13.20μmol·CO2·m-2·s-1) from mid-May to early June, the fruit growing season. Also, the stomatal densities were higher at the +3.4℃ (229ea/㎟), compared to the control (181ea/㎟). The rate of floral bud differentiation affecting the yield in the following year was the lowest at the +5.7℃. These results suggest that a temperature elevated to 3.4℃ in the future may give a positive effect on the yield and quality of peach 'Mihong' while a temperature elevated above 5.7℃ may affect negatively.

  • For the purpose of detecting the capability of the trees to resist air pollution and of determining the tree species best suited for purification of polluted air, particularly with regard to $SO_2$ contamination, six following ornamental tree species were selected as experimental materials: i.e., Hibiscus syriacus L., Ginkgo biloba L., Forsythia koreana Nak., Syringa dilatata Nak., Larix leptolepis Gordon, and Pinus rigida Miller. The susceptiblities of the trees were observed and analyzed on the basis of area ratio of smoke injury spots to the total leaf area. The results of the experiments are as follows: I. The Susceptibilities to Sulfur Dioxide. (1) The decreasing order of tolerance to $SO_2$ by species was as follows: 1. Hibiscus syriacus 2. Ginkgo biloba, 3. Forsythia koreana, 4. Syringa dilatata, 5. Larix leptolepis, and 6. Pinus rigida. In general, Hibiscus syriacus and Ginkgo biloba can be grouped as the most resistant and Larix leptolepis and Pinus rigida as the least resistant and Forsythia koreana and Syringa dilatata as of intermediate resistance. (2) The sulfur content of the leaves treated by $SO_2$ increased in proportion to the increase of the concentration of the fumigation. The content in the coniferous species proved to be less than that of the broad-leaved species, but Ginkgo biloba proved to contain as much sulfur as broad-leaved species. (3) The earlier-stage leaves fumigated in June with the $SO_2$ concentration up-to-l-ppm showed that sulfur content increases in proportion to the increase of the concentration of the fumigation, but the difference between concentration was not so significant. (4) The later-stage leaves fumigated in October showed higher sulfur content than the earlier stage leaves, and a wider range of difference in sulfur content was detected among different concentrations. The limit of fumigation resulting in culmination of sulfur absoption in broad-leaved species, such as Syringa dilatata, Hibiscus syriacus, and Forsythia koreana proved to be around 0.6 ppm. (5) Due to the sprouting ability and the adventitious bud formation, the recovery from $SO_2$ fumigation was prominent in Hibiscus syriacus, Syringa dilatata, and Forsythia koreana. (6) The differences in the smoke spot color were recognized by species: namely, dirt-brown in Syringa dilatata, brilliant yellowish-brown in Pinus rigida and Ginkgo biloba, whitish-yellow in Hibiscus syriacus and reddish-brown in Forsythia koreana. (7) The leaf margins proved to be most susceptible, and the leaf bases of the mid-rib most tolerant. In both Ginkgo biloba and Larix leptolepis, the younger leaves were more resistant to $SO_2$ than the older ones. II. The ulfur Content of the Leaves of the Ornamental Trees Growing in the City of Seoul. (1) The sulfur contents in the leaves of the Seoul City ornamental trees showed a remarkably higher value than those of the leaves in the non-polluted areas. The sulfur content of the leaves in the non-polluted area proved to be in the following descending order: Salix pseudo-lasiogyne Leveille, Ginkgo biloba L., Alianthus altissima swingle, Platanus orientalis L., and Populus deltoides Marsh. (2) In respect to the sulfur contents in the leaves of the ornamental trees in the city of Seoul, the air pollution proved to be the worst in the areas of Seoul Railroad Station, the Ahyun Pass, and the Entrance to Ewha Womans University. The areas of Deogsu Palace, Gyeongbog Palace, Changdeog Palace, Changgyeong Park and the Hyehwa Intersection were least polluted, and the areas of the East Gate, the Ulchi Intersection and the Seodaemun Intersection are in the intermediate state.
