  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the self-rated peridontal health status of dental patients and the type of their treatment(implant, orthodontic treatment and general treatment) to the quality of life(happiness index), to investigate influential factors for oral health, and ultimately to provide some information on the development of oral health care programs geared toward boosting the happiness index. The subjects in this study were the patients who visited dental hospitals and clinics in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province. As for relationship between the field of treatment and the happiness index, the patients who received orthodontic treatment scored higher in both each itemand all the five items, and the patients who received implant treatment scored lower. Regarding links between self-rated periodontal health status and the happiness index, the patients who had no oral symptoms scored higher in both each item and all the five items, and the respondents whose self-rated health status and self-rated oral health status were both very good scored higher in the happiness index. The preparation of oral health programs that aim to improve the self-rated oral health of patients who visit dental hospitals or clinics is required.

  • In this study 240 geriatric patients, aged 60 year and over were evaluated using a questionnaire and oral examination for their oral status, demand and satisfaction of prosthodontic treatment. The followings are the findings : 1. The single main complaint was regarding from the existing removable prosthesis, When the complaints were categorized into larger groups, complaints regarding existing prosthesis were 32% and followed by 30% in caries and endodontic problems. 2. Approximately half of the geriatric patients had 21 or more remaining dentition. This number however diminished with increase in age of the surveyed patient. 3. According to the result from questionnaire, 48% of patients wearing removable prosthesis and 43% with fixed prosthesis were not satisfied with existing prosthesis. Thirty-seven percentages of patients were not satisfied with aesthetics and unable to chew food properly. 4. Seventy-seven percentages of patients requested for new prosthesis and the majority of these patients had complaints of difficulties in chewing and discomfort. 5. Thirty-nine percentages of patients were wearing removable prosthesis. More complete dentures were found on maxilla and partial dentures on mandible.

  • In the present study, we addressed the question of whether treatment with mannitol, an osmotic diuretic, affects astrogliovascular responses to status epilepticus (SE). In saline-treated animals, astrocytes exhibited reactive astrogliosis in the CA1-3 regions 2-4 days after SE. In the mannitol-treated animals, a large astroglial empty zone was observed in the CA1 region 2 days after SE. This astroglial loss was unrelated to vasogenic edema formation. There was no difference in SE-induced neuronal loss between saline- and mannitol-treated animals. Furthermore, mannitol treatment did not affect astroglial loss and vasogenic edema formation in the dentate gyrus and the piriform cortex. These findings suggest that mannitol treatment induces selective astroglial loss in the CA1 region independent of vasogenic edema formation following SE. These findings support the hypothesis that the susceptibility of astrocytes to SE is most likely due to the distinctive heterogeneity of astrocytes independent of hemodynamics. • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors influencing the ambulatory status in hemiplegia with intracerebral hemorrhage after rehabilitation. Thirty patients with stroke who was admitted in the Chosun University Hospital, between from January 1st' 1998 and December 31st' 1998, were included in this study. The following variables as a potential predictors for ambulation were evaluated at treatment of the stroke onset; 1) general characteristics including age and sex, and 2) clinical characteristics including frequency and onset time of the stroke, affected side, duration of the treatment, time interval between onset and rehabilitation, manual muscle test of paretic limb, sitting and standing balance, proprioception, perception, cognitive function. We compared and analyzed the these variables to the two type of ambulatory status at the time of the discharge by Modified Barthel Index, independent, dependent. The data were analyzed by student t-test, Fisher-exact test, Mann Whitney-U test, $X^{2}$-test, correlation analysis(spearman's). The results were as follows; 1. Were no significantly inflenced independent ambulatory status among general characteristics. 2. Frequency of the stroke and proprioception (p<0.05), muscle strength of the lower limb, cognitive function and standing balance (p<0.01), perception and sitting balance (p<0.001) were significantly inflenced independent ambulatory status among clinical characteristics. 3. Independent Variable correlated with the ambulatory status were muscle strength of the lower limb, proprioception and sitting balance (p<0.05), standing balance, frequency of the stroke, perception and cognitive function (p<0.01). Therefore the muscle strength of the lower limb, proprioception, sitting balance, standing balance, frequency of the stroke, perception, cognitive function were the most significant influencing factors of ambulatory status after rehabilitation.

  • To evaluate the oral health status and to assess the resultant dental treatment needs in adolescents, 2,062 adolescents aged 14-17 years attending middle and high schools in Yangsan were surveyed by clinical examination and questionnaires. The obtained results were as follows. In the dental caries examination based on WHO criteria, the treatment needs of 66.7% of the subjects were determined. Assessment of dental erosion by the VEDE system indicated the treatment needs in 27.8% of the subjects, while MIH examination based on EAPD criteria indicated the treatment needs in 14.7%. Assessment of malocclusion using the occlusal index showed good occlusion in 67.8%, no need for treatment in 19.7%, slight need for treatment in 6.8%, definite need for treatment in 4.5%, and worst occlusion in 1.1% of the subjects, showing 12.5% of average treatment need. The prevalence and treatment need for periodontal disease was found to be 71.2% by CPITN assessments. The assessment of temporomandibular disorders by Helkimo's anamnestic index showed no symptoms in 67.1%, mild symptoms in 13.4%, and severe symptoms in 19.5% of the examinees. The overall treatment need of TMD was 20.6%. Periodontal diseases were ranked the highest in treatment need, followed by dental caries, dental erosion, MIH, TMD, and malocclusion in order. The results of this study indicated the overall status of adolescents'oral health and dental treatment needs. These might hopefully provide fundamental data and contribute to establishing promotional projects for adolescent oral health in Korea.

  • A study on estrus synchronized dairy cows using progesterone intravaginal device was done to classify each cow's reproductive status from calving to synchronization and to evaluate the reproductive performance according to ovarian and uterine status, and calving season. From calving to estrus synchronization, silent heat or error of estrus detection among ovarian status and endometritis among uterine disorders were exposed in the most distribution (75.4% and 48.3%, respectively). The pregnancy rate of cows with inactive ovaries was lower than those in the follicular and luteal phase. And according to the uterine status before estrus synchronization, the pregnancy rate was similar in three groups; normal, endometritis, and pyometra (70.9, 69.1 and 100%, respectively). The interval from calving to conception was shorter (p<0.05) in cows calved during autumn than in cows calved during spring and winter.

  • A 57-year-old man was transferred to our emergency department with decreased mental status after organophosphate intoxication. He had a four year history of benzodiazepine and hypnotic medication use for chronic insomnia and a depressive mood disorder. He had no previous history of seizures, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. By hospital day 5, the patient was noted to be awake and to have repetitive jerking movements involving the left upper extremity, and appeared apathetic, depressed and less responsive to external stimuli. A benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome was subsequently apparent when he developed several generalized tonic clonic seizures and status epilepticus. Using a continuous midazolam intravenous infusion, we successfully controlled the refractory seizure without complications. We present a rare case of status epilepticus from a benzodiazepine withdrawal that developed during the treatment for organophosphate intoxication.
