  • An microorganism able to degrade ethylene glycol(EG) was developed. Using this microorganism, biological treatment of ethylene glycol was studied in Erlenmeyer flasks and a laboratory scale stirred loop bioreactor. The removal efficiencies of ethylene glycol from synthetic wastewater were 91.6% ${\sim}$ 97.7% at $30^{\circ}C$ ${\sim}$ $40^{\circ}C$, and 96.3% ${\sim}$ 97.9% at initial pH 9 ${\sim}$ 11 respectively. Also the removal efficiencies of ethylene glycol were found to be more then 92% at initial ethylene glycol concentration of 300mg/L ${\sim}$ I400mg/L. In treatment of weight loss treatment wastewater using Erlenmeyer flasks, the removal efficiencies of ethylene glycol were 79.6%. 82.5%. 77.6%. and 71.3% at initial pH 9. 10. 11. and 12.4 after 11 days of reaction. Moreover in treatment of complex dyeing process wastewater. the residual ethylene glycol was not detected at the initial pH 10.0 and pH 11.3 after 4 days of reaction. When stirred loop bioreactor was used for removing ethylene glycol, the residual ethylene glycol was not detected after 108 hrs and 60 hrs of reaction in batch treatment of weight loss treatment wastewater and complex dyeing process wastewater.

  • With a belief of high water quality production and less chemical usage, membrane technology including Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Nanofiltration(NF) is being employed more and more in drinking water treatment process. However, due to higher energy consumption of UF and NF, MF is normally used for drinking water treatment especially in a plant of large scale. In this investigation, performance ofsand filtration and membrane filtration was compared regarding removal of various water quality parameters, such as TOC, DOC, KMnO4 consumption, THMFP, and HAAFP. Two lines of pilot plant have been operated, one of which line is a traditional advanced water treatment process which includes sedimentation, sand filtration, ozonation, and activated carbon, and the other line is an alternative treatment process which includes sedimentation with inclined plate, MF membrane, ozonation, and activated carbon. For the first about 4months of period, MF filtration showed similar or little bit higher performance than sand filtration. However, after about 4month later, sand filtration showed much higher performance in removing all parameters monitored in the investigation. It was found that sand filtration is a better option than MF filtration as far as microbial community is fully activated in sand filter bed.

  • This study conducted a result analysis on operation of 26 Rural Community Sewage Treatment Plant (RCSTP) newly constructed in Yeong-yang, Bong-hwa and An-dong areas which are located at the upper region of An-dong Dam and Im-ha Dam. Based on operation result, an analysis on characteristics of sewage in each area and the treatment efficiency of the installed treatment process was conducted. The result of analysis on characteristics of sewage has shown the difference in concentration of the sewage according to area characteristics. Sewage in areas with frequent occurrence of agricultural water and livestock wastewater had high concentration. It is important to select the most suitable treatment process when selecting a treatment process for RCSTP according to properties of sewage in each area. As a result of operation, the disposal efficiency for organic matter and suspended solids was stable with less fluctuation, but the disposal efficiency for nitrogen and phosphorus showed high fluctuation. This signifies that it is necessary to pay attention to operation condition management of nitrogen and phosphorus when operating RCSTP.

  • The sintering process of BSCCO 2223 tapes is a complex process that is very sensitive to parameters, such as temperature, oxygen partial pressure, heating and cooling rate and holding time. During the first heat treatment, 2212 phase of precursor powder is partially transformed into 2223 phase and some residual secondary phases, such as $(Bi,Pb)_2$$Sr_2$CuO/sub y/(2201), $(Ca,Sr)_2$CuO/sub y/(2/1AEC), (Ca,Sr)/sub 14/Cu/sub 24/O/sub 41/(14/24 AEC) etc. The secondary phases are difficult to be removed from the BSCCO 2223 matrix on the heat treatment. These secondary phases degrade the critical current density. In order to minimize the amount and size of alkaline earth cuprate(AEC) particles step heat treatment is applied during the first heat treatment under the varying atmosphere. Experimental results showed that by adapting the step heat treatment process, the amount and particle size of the secondary phases in the final tapes are decreased. Consequently, the BSCCO 2223grain texture and Jc properties are improved.

  • Advanced oxidation of wastewater was studied with a purpose to remove TOC and color by the ozone-assisted Fenton reaction. The optimal conditions were determined by hydrogen peroxide and ozone concentrations. Experimental results indicate that the ozone treatment after Fentons process was found to provide very efficient removal efficiency in the process, avoiding the exclusive ozone treatment. The combined process of ozone in the Fenton oxidation respectively was increased removal efficiences of 10.7% in comparison with exclusive Fenton oxidation. Also, the treatments of ozone after Fenton's oxidation respectively had increased the removal efficiences of 16.%. As a result, the treatment of ozone after Fentons oxidation had the best removal efficiency of approximately 96%. Removal efficiency of color was significantly increased as mush as 26% by the advanced Fenton's oxidation in comparison with exclusive Fenton's oxidation. The removal efficiencies in the biological treatment using Bacillus subtilis after Fenton's oxidation and after Fenton's and ozone's oxidation were increased by 14% and 19% respectively. Although these combined Bacillus subtilis-assisted Fenton's oxidation was determined to be effective method to treat the dyeing wastewater in an economic point of view, the choice of wastewater treatment can be varied depending on water quality.

  • The roles of polypropylene (PP) beads and pH on membrane fouling and treatment efficiency were investigated in a hybrid advanced water treatment process of tubular carbon fiber membranes (ultrafiltration (UF) or microfiltration (MF)) and PP beads. The synthetic feed including humic acid and kaolin flowed inside the membrane, and the permeated contacted the PP beads fluidized in the space between the membrane and the module with UV irradiation and periodic water back-flushing. In the hybrid process of UF ($0.05{\mu}m$) and PP beads, final resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) after 180 min increased as PP beads increased. The turbidity treatment efficiency was the maximum at 30 g/L; however, that of dissolved organic matters (DOM) showed the highest at PP beads 50 g/L. The $R_f$ strengthened as pH of feed increased. It means that the membrane fouling could be inhibited at low alkali condition. The treatment efficiency of turbidity was almost constant independent of pH; however, that of DOM showed the maximum at pH 5. For MF ($0.1{\mu}m$), the final $R_f$ was the minimum at PP beads 40 g/L. The treatment efficiencies of turbidity and DOM were the maximum at PP beads 10 g/L.

  • At present water crisis is not an issue of scarcity, but of access. There is a growing recognition of the need for increased access to clean water (drinkable, agricultural, industrial use). An encouraging number of innovative technologies, systems, components, processes are emerging for water-treatment, including new filtration and disinfectant technologies, and removal of organics from water. In the past decade many methods have been developed. The most important membrane-based water technologies include reverse osmosis (RO), ultrafiltration (UF), microfiltration (MF), and nanofiltration. Beside membrane based water-treatment processes, other techniques such as advanced oxidation process (AOP) have also been developed. Some unconventional water treatment technology such as magnetic treatment is also being developed.

  • Micelle-Enhanced Ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a membrane separation processes that improving ultrafiltration process with the formation of micelles of the surface active agents. Surface active agents are widely used to improve membrane processes due to the ability to trap organic compounds and metals in the treatment of industrial waste water. In this study, surface active agents are used to improve micelle-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solid (TDS), turbidity and clogging the membrane in dairy wastewater treatment. Three important operational factors (anionic surface active agent concentration, pressure and pH) and these interactions were investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design. Results show that due to the concentration polarization layer and increase the number of Micelles; the anionic surface active agent concentration has a negative effect on the flux and has a positive effect on the elimination of contamination indices. pH, and the pressure have the greatest effect on flux. On the other hand, it could be stated that these percentages of separation are in the percentages range of Nano-filtration (NF). While MEUF process has higher flux than NF process. The results have been achieved at lower pressure while NF process needs high pressure, thus making MEUF is the replacement for the NF process.

  • Ferroelectric $ReMnO_3$(Re:Ho, Er) thin films were deposited on Si(100) substrate by Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). Crystallinity and electric properties of $ReMnO_3$(Re:Ho, Er) thin films were investigated as a function of thermal heat treatment process, CHP (Conventional Heat-treatment Process) and RTP (Rapid Thermal Process). $ReMnO_3$(Re:Ho, Er) thin films prepared by RTP showed higher c-axis preferred orientation and homogeneous surface roughness than those prepared by CHP. The remnant polarization of ferroelectric hysteresis loop of $ReMnO_3$(Re:Ho, Er) thin films was strongly dependent on the caxis preferred orientation of hexagonal single phase, and the leakage current characteristics of thin films were dependent on the homogeneity of grain size as well as surface roughness of thin films.

  • Lab scale experiment study was carried out for biological treatment process development in cruise. SBR(Sequence Batch Reactor) process with BM(Beneficial Microorganisms) was investigated for practical application on shipboard sewage treatment. From the results it was suggested that SBR process with BM might be a suitable process for cruise sewage treatment in terms of decrease in odorous compounds, maintenance of useful microorganisms and creating special environmental conditions. By adding BM to SBR system, odor unit of sulfur compounds was about 20 times reduced.
