The removal efficiencies of nutrients (N and P) and heavy metals (Cu and Ni) by Rhodobacter blasticus and R. blasticus attached to polysulfone carriers, alginate carriers, PVA carriers, and PVA + zeolite carriers in synthetic wastewater were compared. In the comparison of the nutrient removal efficiency based on varying concentrations (100, 200, 500, and 1000 mg/L), R. blasticus + polysulfone carrier treatment showed removal efficiencies of 98.9~99.84% for N and 96.92~99.21% for P. The R. blasticus + alginate carrier treatment showed removal efficiencies of 88.04~97.1% for N and 90.33~97.13% for P. The R. blasticus + PVA carrier treatment showed removal efficiencies of 18.53~44.25% for N and 14.93~43.63% for P. The R. blasticus + PVA + zeolite carrier treatment showed removal efficiencies of 26.65~64.33% for N and 23.44~64.05% for P. In addition, at the minimum inhibitory concentration of heavy metals, R. blasticus (dead cells) + polysulfone carrier treatment showed removal efficiencies of 7.77% for Cu and 12.19% for Ni. Rhodobacter blasticus (dead cells) + alginate carrier treatment showed removal efficiencies of 25.83% for Cu and 31.12% for Ni.
This study analyzes the relative efficiencies of three types of non-landfill treatment of food wastes; recycling to fertilizers or animal feeds, reducing the size of food wastes, and fermentation of food wastes. Unlike previous studies our study incorporates not only usual inputs and outputs but also emissions of pollutants such as odor and noise generated by the treatment facilities into the analysis. A nonparametric method suggested by Fare et al. (1989) has been used to estimate the relative efficiencies of facilities incorporating emission of pollutants. The results show that recycling is more efficient than the other two treatment methods. It is also shown that the usual models that do not incorporate the environmental aspects of the treatment facilities derive a biased conclusion on the relative efficiencies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate removal efficiencies of contaminants in night soil treatment plant using the B3 system. The samples were collected from retaining tank and settlement tank in Yechon night soil plant. We experimented concentrations of BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP. Concentration data were processed using removal efficiencies by season and correlation analysis with pilot running parameters. Removal efficiencies of total organic carbon was over 96%, TN was 98% during summer, 80.9% during winter. In the case of TP, the highest removal efficiencies was 94.1% during fall and the lowest removal efficiencies was 82% during spring. Results of correlation analysis showed two positive correlation groups and one negative group. Positive correlations were among temperature, BOD and TN. The others were pH, BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP. Negative correlation were among MLSS, BOD, COD, SS, TN, TP.
This study was conducted to use oyster shell as media for biological wastewater treatment. The comparison between the removal efficiencies of the activated sludge and the submerged biofilm process with oyster shell media (5% of reactor volume) for domestic sewage treatment was made. The contaminant removal efficiencies of the submerged process were higher than that of the activated sludge process. And the removal efficiencies of the submerged biofilm process with oyster shell media of 10% and 18% were Investigated at various loading rate. The removal efficiencies of 10% were higher than that of the 18% during the experimental period. The effluent concentration from the sub- merged bloom process using oyster shell media was prediceted by the Stover-Kincannon model.
This study mainly concentrated on the treatment of nightsoil by an anaerobic filter media process. Nightsoil has been one of the major water pollutants in this couotry. It represents high ROD and SS concentrations. A comprehensive laboratory study conducted at Kangwoon National University indicate: (1) In the case of anaerobic filter system, COD and BOD removal efficiencies were greatly influenced by hydraulic retention time(HRT), but SS removal efficiencies dropped slowly when HRT were 2~13 days. (2) COD removal efficiencies were 19% when HRT were 15 days, 14% when HRT were 8 days, 10% when HRT were 6 days, 9% when HRT were 4 days, 2% when HRT were 2 days. (3) BOD removal efficiencies were 23% when HRT were 15 days, 14% when HRT were 8 days, 18% when HRT were 6 days, 7% when HRT were 4 days, 5.8% when HRT were 2days. (4) SS removal efficiencies were 21%~25%(2~15 days HRT).
In Bok-Jeong water treatment plant, chlorination is the only technique used for disinfection of drinking water. This disinfecting treatment leads to the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs). This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of improving removal efficiency of THM precursor in the conventional water treatment processes by $TiO_2$ photocatalytic oxidation. Removal efficiencies of DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were low in the conventional water treatment processes. With application of $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were reduced more effectively. As the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic reaction time increased, the removal efficiencies of DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were increased. The $TiO_2$ photocatalytic removal efficiencies of DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were increased with increasing $TiO_2$ dosage. However, over 0.6g/l of $TiO_2$ dosage, the efficiency reached a plateau.

Bacterial numbers, such as endospore-formers, and treatment efficiencies were investigated for Rotating Activated Bacillus Contactors (RABC) and other advanced wastewater treatment processes including anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O), sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and biological aerated filter (BAF). Endospore-forming bacterial numbers in the RABC showed 129-fold higher levels than those of the existing advanced systems. RABC process demonstrated the highest bacterial numbers in its bioreactors (paired t-test, p<0.01). RBC biofilms and aeration tanks of the RABC system showed 131- and 476-fold higher than other existing advanced processes, respectively. Mean treatment efficiencies of the existing systems were 83.5% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 59.1% for total nitrogen (TN) and 76.8% for total phosphorus (TP). However, RABC process removed 96.9% for COD, 96.9% for TN and 91.9% for TP for highly concentrated food wastewater (COD>1,500 mg/L, TN>150 mg/L, TP>50 mg/L). Treatment efficiency was significantly reduced when the numbers of Bacillus genus in the bioreactors decreased below $10^6CFU/mL$. The automated RABC (A-RABC), in which dissolved oxygen concentrations are automatically controlled, showed higher treatment efficiencies compared to the RABC process. The RABC system maintained sufficient bacterial numbers for the effective treatment of highly concentrated food wastewater. Moreover, final effluent was in agreement to water quality standards.
The extraction efficiencies of panaxynol and panaxydol were optimal at 80$^{\circ}C$ with soxhlet method. The extraction efficiencies increased up to 45$^{\circ}C$ with shaking method. Amounts of panaxynol and panaxydol were determined by gas chromatography. Extracted quantities of panaxynol and panaxydol using the shaking method increased over a period of 14 hours. The efficiencies of panaxynol and panaxydol extraction by soxhlet and shaking methods were higher for smaller particle sizes. Upon water swelling treatment, extraction efficiencies of panaxynol and panaxydol decreased gradually with time for both methods.
An microorganism able to degrade ethylene glycol(EG) was developed. Using this microorganism, biological treatment of ethylene glycol was studied in Erlenmeyer flasks and a laboratory scale stirred loop bioreactor. The removal efficiencies of ethylene glycol from synthetic wastewater were 91.6% ${\sim}$ 97.7% at $30^{\circ}C$${\sim}$$40^{\circ}C$, and 96.3% ${\sim}$ 97.9% at initial pH 9 ${\sim}$ 11 respectively. Also the removal efficiencies of ethylene glycol were found to be more then 92% at initial ethylene glycol concentration of 300mg/L ${\sim}$ I400mg/L. In treatment of weight loss treatment wastewater using Erlenmeyer flasks, the removal efficiencies of ethylene glycol were 79.6%. 82.5%. 77.6%. and 71.3% at initial pH 9. 10. 11. and 12.4 after 11 days of reaction. Moreover in treatment of complex dyeing process wastewater. the residual ethylene glycol was not detected at the initial pH 10.0 and pH 11.3 after 4 days of reaction. When stirred loop bioreactor was used for removing ethylene glycol, the residual ethylene glycol was not detected after 108 hrs and 60 hrs of reaction in batch treatment of weight loss treatment wastewater and complex dyeing process wastewater.
Biological treatment of wastewater was studied with a purpose to remove TOC by the reduction of water hardness. The optimal conditions of coagulant were determined by reaction time and amount of coagulant. Experimental results indicate that the biological treatment after physico-chemical treatment was found to provide very efficient removal efficiency in the process to treat the textile wastewater, including the carbon dioxide treatment. The combined process of carbonization in the physico-chemical treatment respectively was increased the removal efficiencies of $30.0\%$ in biological treatment in comparison with exclusive biological treatment. As a result, the treatment of hardness after carbonization had the best removal efficiency of approximately $60.0\%$. The removal efficiencies in the exclusive biological treatment using Bacillus subtilis and after carbonization were increased by $38.9\%\;and\;69.0\%$ respectively. The combined Bacillus subtilis-assisted biological treatment was determined to be the most effective method to treat the textile wastewater in an economic point of view, the water quality in the wastewater treatment plays an important role.
