This study was conducted to evaluate the attraction effects of Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum to light emitting diode (LED) trap in granary and compared with the black light bulb (BLB) trap, which is typical used in commercial trap. The red LED trap showed more attractive to S. zeamais and T. castaneum than that of the BLB. Moreover, the external condition of granary was about 1.5 times more attractive to S. zeamais and T. castaneum than the internal condition of granary. These results suggested that red LED trap could be useful to control S. zeamais and T. castaneum in granary.
Spatial activities of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were investigated weekly using yellow sticky trap which were placed at three different height and monitored during four time periods. Yellow sticky trap placed at plant height caught significantly more L. trifolii (Burgess) than did traps placed at 30 and 60cm above plant height. Diel activities of L. trifolii (Burgess) were monitored with yellow sticky traps at 1- and 2-h intervals during three time periods. Leafminer flight activity in May, July and October peaked from 1400 to 1800 hours, 0800 hours and from 1200 to 1400 hours, respectively. 2nd peak of flight activity only occurred in May. Attraction of L. trifolii (Burgess) for yellow sticky traps was affected by temperature as well as solar intensity. Male of L. trifolii (Burgess) appeared more responsive to yellow sticky traps than female regardless of trap height or time of day.

In rice, limited efforts have been made to identify genes by the use of insertional mutagens, especially heterologous transposons such as the maize Ac/Ds. We constructed Ac and gene trap Ds vectors and introduced them into the rice genome by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. In this report, rice plants that contained single and simple insertions of T-DNA were analyzed in order to evaluate the gene-tagging efficiency. The 3'end of Ds was examined for putative splicing donor sites. As observed in maize, three splice donor sites were identified at the 3'end of the Ds in rice. Nearly 80% of Ds elements wered excised from the original T-DNA sites, when Ac cDNA was expressed under a CaMV 35S promoter. Repetitive ratoon culturing was performed to induce new transpositions of Ds in new plants derived from cuttings. About 30% of the plants carried at least one Ds that underwent secondary transposition in the later cultures. 8% of transposed Ds elements expressed GUS in various tissues of rice panicles. With cloned DNA adjacent to Ds, the genomic complexities of the insertion sites were examined by Southern hybridization. Half of the Ds insertion sites showed simple hybriodization patterns which could be easily utilized to locate the Ds. Our data demonstrate that the Ac/Ds mediated gene trap system could prove an excellent tool for the analysis of functions of genes in rice. We discuss genetic strategies that could be employed in a largee scale mutagenesis using a heterologous Ac/Ds family in rice.

We conducted the experiment in order to evaluate the control effect of whitefly using the sticky trap. Both Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum were more attracted to yellow sticky trap than white or blue colored traps. When yellow sticky traps were installed in different height around tomato, catches of B. tabaci were not significantly different among the traps and catches of T. vaporariorum on the traps in the upper position were more than lower position. T. vaporariorum was more attracted to trap when host plant is smaller. The attracted number to yellow sticky traps were not significantly different between whiteflies (B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum) and their parasitoids (Encarsia formosa and Eretmocerus mundus). Yellow sticky trap reduced population density of both B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum by more than 80% on tomato nursery in a screen cage. Population density of whiteflies in greenhouse installed yellow sticky traps was less than one third of that in untreated greenhouse.
Mass trapping of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, has been considered as an option to control this pest. This study applied the commercial lures to the hot pepper-cultivating greenhouses and assessed the enhancement of the attracting efficiency by adding to sticky traps. There was no color difference in the attracting efficiency between blue and yellow sticky traps. However, the installation position of the traps was crucial in the greenhouses. The more thrips were captured within host cropping area than outside areas of the crop. In vertical trap position, it was the most optimal to install the traps at the crop crown. Using these installation parameters, the yellow sticky traps captured approximately 1% population of the thrips. To enhance the trapping efficiency, the commercial lures containing aggregation pheromone or 4-methoxybenzaldehyde were added to the yellow sticky traps. However, these commercial lures did not significantly enhance the trapping efficiency compared to the yellow sticky trap alone. In contrast, Y-tube olfactometry assays confirmed the high efficiency of the aggregation pheromone or another plant volatile (methyl isonicotinate) to attract the thrips. Interestingly, these lure components had lower attracting efficiencies compared to the hot pepper flowers. The high attractive efficiency of the flowers was supported by the observation that the commercial lure was effective to enhance the trapping efficiency of the yellow sticky trap against F. occidentalis in Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) field without any flowers. This study indicates the limitation of the commercial lures in application to hot pepper fields for the mass trapping of F. occidentalis. It also suggests active volatile component(s) from hot pepper flowers to attract F. occidentalis.
Field collections were made from six gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) Populations in Kyonggy and Cheju areas during the period 1987∼1997. Characteristics of gypsy moth populations at different phases were examined in terms of egg mass density, relative larval density, plant damage, and fecundity. Males captured in pheromone trap were recorded, and we examined if there was a relationship between numbers captured and the population density during the following generation. Egg mass density was closely related with larval density, and furthermore these densities were correlated with the level of plant damage, indicating that larval dispersion was limited in oviposition areas. The gypsy moth population cycle was short in Korea with the period from population development to innocuous level usually lasting 2∼3 years. Male caught by pheromone trap (mean number of males caught per trap per day in peak emergence period) was positively correlated with egg mass densities in the following season (r²=0.93). A low fecundity was detected from outbreak populations which accompanied defoliation. Fecundity of gypsy moth ranged from 538 to 601 at other phases.

This study was conducted to obtain the correlation between the plant surface spray adhesion amount of pesticides and the pest control effect. The linearity of the standard curves of dinotefuran and thiodicarb was $R^2=0.9999$, and recovery was between 70% to 120% which was satisfactory for insecticide residue analyses. The pest control effect was evaluated by assessing the number of apple leafminers (Phyllonorycter ringoniella, Gracillariidae, Lepidoptera) captured by sex pheromone traps from late June to late September in 2015. For the adhesion amount, dinotefuran recovered from trap A and B, respectively were $47{\mu}g/50cm^2$ and $23{\mu}g/50cm^2$, which can be characterized as a very low adhesion amount in comparison to the average adhesion amount of $81{\mu}g/50cm^2$ in the field. In case of thiodicarb, $691{\mu}g/50cm^2$ and $71{\mu}g/50cm^2$ were recovered from trap A and B, respectively, and the average amount in the field is $325{\mu}g/50cm^2$. These results showed close correlation with the insect population captured by trap A and B. The numbers of insects captured by trap A and B between the end of July and late August were similar. After spraying thiodicarb on August 28, the number of apple leafminers captured by trap B is bigger than that of trap A. It appears that pest occurrence tended to be high at low adhesion amounts of the active ingredient. Therefore, in order to obtain an optimal control effect, it is suggested that uniform application of insecticides is critical instead of relying on the amount of insecticide applied in the field.

Vaccinium oldhamii (V. oldhamii) has been reported to exert a variety of the pharmacological properties such as anti-oxidant activity, anti-cancer activity, and inhibitory activity of ${\alpha}$-amylase and acetylcholinesterase. However, the anti-inflammatory activity of V. oldhamii has not been studied. In this study, we aimed to investigate anti-inflammatory activity of the stem extracts from V. oldhamii, and to elucidate the potential mechanisms in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Among VOS, VOL and VOF, the inhibitory effect of NO and PGE2 production induced by LPS was highest in VOS treatment. Thus, VOS was selected for the further study. VOS dose-dependently blocked LPS-induced NO and PGE2 production by inhibiting iNOS and COX-2 expression, respectively. VOS inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$. In addition, VOS suppressed TRAP activity and attenuated the expression of the osteoclast-specific genes such as NFATc1, c-FOS, TRAP, MMP-9, cathepsin K, CA2, OSCAR and ATPv06d2. VOS inhibited LPS-induced $NF-{\kappa}B$ signaling activation through blocking $I{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$ degradation and p65 nuclear accumulation. VOS inhibited MAPK signaling activation by attenuating the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, p38 and JNK. Furthermore, VOS inhibited ATF2 phosphorylation and blocked ATF2 nuclear accumulation. From these findings, VOS has potential to be a candidate for the development of chemopreventive or therapeutic agents for the inflammatory diseases.
