  • A higher order zig-zag shell theory is developed to refine the predictions of the mechanical and thermal behaviors partially coupled. The in-plane displacement fields are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field through the thickness. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the out-of-plane displacement in order to consider transverse normal deformation and stress. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses. Thus the proposed theory has only seven primary unknowns and they do not depend upon the number of layers. In the description of geometry and deformation of shell surface, all rigorous exact expressions are used. Through the numerical examples of partially coupled analysis, the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory are demonstrated. The present theory is suitable in the predictions of deformation and stresses of thick composite shell under mechanical and thermal loads combined.

  • A finite strip formulation was developed for buckling and free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates based on different shear deformation plate theories. The different shear deformation theories such as Zigzag higher order, Refined Plate Theory (RPT) and other higher order plate theories by variation of transverse shear strains through plate thickness in the parabolic form, sine and exponential were adopted here. The two loaded opposite edges of the plate were assumed to be simply supported and remaining edges were assumed to have arbitrary boundary conditions. The polynomial shape functions are applied to assess the in-plane and out-of-plane deflection and rotation of the normal cross-section of plates in the transverse direction. The finite strip procedure based on the virtual work principle was applied to derive the stiffness, geometric and mass matrices. Numerical results were obtained based on various shear deformation plate theories to verify the proposed formulation. The effects of length to thickness ratios, modulus ratios, boundary conditions, the number of layers and fiber orientation of cross-ply and angle-ply laminates were determined. The additional results on the same effects in the interaction of biaxial in-plane loadings on the critical buckling load were determined as well.

  • In this scientific work, constructing of a novel shear deformation beam model including the stretching effect is of concern for flexural and free vibration responses of functionally graded beams. The particularity of this model is that, in addition to considering the transverse shear deformation and the stretching effect, the zero transverse shear stress condition on the beam surface is assured without introducing the shear correction parameter. By employing the Hamilton's principle together with the concept of the neutral axe's position for such beams, the equations of motion are obtained. Some examples are performed to demonstrate the effects of changing gradients, thickness stretching, and thickness to length ratios on the bending and vibration of functionally graded beams.

Both the displacement and temperature fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. Linear zig-zag form is adopted in the electric field. • This paper investigates the free vibrations of cylindrical shells made of time-dependent materials for different viscoelastic models under various boundary conditions. During the extraction of equations, the displacement field is estimated through the first-order shear deformation theory taking into account the transverse normal strain effect. The constitutive equations follow Hooke's Law, and the kinematic relations are linear. The assumption of axisymmetric is included in the problem. The governing equations of thick viscoelastic cylindrical shell are determined for Maxwell, Kelvin-Voigt and the first and second types of Zener's models based on Hamilton's principle. The motion equations involve four coupled partial differential equations and an analytical method based on the elementary theory of differential equations is used for its solution. Relying on the results, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of viscoelastic shells are identified. Conducting a parametric study, we examine the effects of geometric and mechanical properties and boundary conditions, as well as the effect of transverse normal strain on natural frequencies. The results in this paper are compared against the results obtained from the finite elements analysis. The results suggest that solutions achieved from the two methods are ideally consistent in a special range.

  • In this paper, a higher order shear and normal deformation theory is presented for functionally graded material (FGM) plates. By dividing the transverse displacement into bending, shear and thickness stretching parts, the number of unknowns and governing equations for the present theory is reduced, significantly facilitating engineering analysis. Indeed, the number of unknown functions involved in the present theory is only five, as opposed to six or even greater numbers in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a hyperbolic variation of ail displacements across the thickness and satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate without requiring any shear correction factor. Equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and free vibration analysis are obtained for simply supported plates. The obtained results are compared with three-dimensional and quasi- three-dimensional solutions and those predicted by other plate theories. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded plates.

  • Analytical formulations and solutions for the first time, to the stability analysis of a simply supported composite and sandwich plates based on a higher order refined theory, developed by the first author and already reported in the literature are presented. The theoretical model presented herein incorporates laminate deformations which account for the effects of transverse shear deformation, transverse normal strain/stress and a nonlinear variation of inplane displacements with respect to the thickness coordinate - thus modelling the warping of transverse cross sections more accurately and eliminating the need for shear correction coefficients. The equations of equilibrium are obtained using the Principle of Minimum Potential Energy (PMPE). The comparison of the results using this higher order refined theory with the available elasticity solutions and the results computed independently using the first order and the other higher order theories developed by other investigators and available in the literature shows that this refined theory predicts the critical buckling load more accurately than all other theories considered in this paper. New results for sandwich laminates are also presented which may serve as a benchmark for future investigations.

  • This study aims to analyze the mechanical buckling behavior of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) integrated with a one-parameter elastic medium and modeled as a Kerr-type foundation under a longitudinal magnetic field. The structure is considered homogeneous and therefore modeled utilizing the nonlocal first shear deformation theory (NL-FSDT). This model targets thin and thick structures and considers the effect of the transverse shear deformation and small-scale effect. The Kerr model describes the elastic matrix, which takes into account the transverse shear strain and normal pressure. Using the nonlocal elastic theory and taking into account the Lorentz magnetic force acquired from Maxwell relations, the stability equation for buckling analysis of a simply supported SWCNT under a longitudinal magnetic field is obtained. Moreover, the mechanical buckling load behavior with respect to the impacts of the magnetic field and the elastic medium parameters considering the nonlocal parameter, the rotary inertia, and transverse shear deformation was examined and discussed. This study showed useful results that can be used for the design of nano-transistors that use the buckling properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes(CNTs) due to the creation of the magnetic field effect.
