Swampland is a potential alternative land to be used in various agricultural production activities in Indonesia, because Indonesia have 33.41 million hectares of swamp land that consists of 13.28 million hectares nontidal swamp and million hectares 20.13 tidal swamp. In the province of South Sumatra, because of unpredictable water level in the field before planting, farmers have been doing agronomic adaptation method through the delay time of transplanting and forced to apply more than one the nursery practice with the combination of a floating nursery method and a dry-bed nursery method. This study was aimed to (1) evaluate the seedling growth and tillering pattern of several popular Indonesian rice varieties, and (2) look for alternative technologies to get a better rice seedlings under two nursery methods in the nontidal swamp land. In the first experiment, the seedling growth characteristics of five rice varieties (Ciherang, Inpara 5, Inpara 9, Inpari 29, and Inpari 30) was evaluated by two methods of nursery, i.e. floating nursery and dry-bed nursery. In the second experiment, rice variety of Inpari 30 was treated with Zn seed priming and foliar fertilizer of 2,300 ppm N at the nursery stage. Those treatments were combined with the time of seedling under floating and dry-bed nursery. The results of the first experiment showed that of the five varieties tested, dry-bed nursery method showed better seedling growth than floating nursery. This was indicated by high leaf number, tiller number, tillers pattern, shoot-root ratio and relative growth rate. Ciherang and Inpari 30 showed high tiller number, and they had produced tertiary tiller in the sixth week of observation. Moreover, shorter period of floating and dry-bed nursery in combination with the treatment of Zn seed priming and spraying seedling with foliar fertilizer N could improve the growth of seedlings.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of seed bed soils and soil pH on the rice growth and control of seedling rots. A 2:1 ratio mixture of clay loam and compost resulted in the best seedling growth and quality among the soils used. At soil pH between 4 and 5. no seedling rots occurred and plant growth was normal. At soil pH above 6, seedling rots occurred and characteristics of seedings was poor. Tachiga ren application before seeding or immediately after seeding reduced seedling rots significantly at the high soil pH.
An experiment was carried out to find out the effects of water foxtail on weed control and rice yield as well as on the reduction of nitrogen application in no tillage transplanted paddy field. Paddy field was dominated by water foxtail whose soil covering degree was adjusted from 8 to 6 by treatment of paraquat (70 l /10a of solution diluted by 1, 000 times). Thirty five-day old seedling was mechanically transplanted and reduced nitrogen, 80% of conventional application was applied at the paddy field. The higher failure in seedling stand was observed at higher degree of soil covering by water foxtail. The failure of seedling stand with covering degree of 8(no paraquat) was 37.4%, while that of covering degree of 6(paraquat-treated) was 12.3%. However, the seedling stand failure was completely recovered at covering degree of six at two weeks after transplanting. The mechanical transplanting made water foxtail in the paddy field fall on the ground whose panicle part was recovered from falling sometimes after transplanting and whole plant died with slow scenesence untill the late of June. But the water foxtail affected by paraquat produced the new panicle from uppernode of stem with dead leaves at early of June and it become die slowly untill the early of July. Though several rice field weeds were observed in the order of Echinochloa crusgallis, Cyperus serotinus, Lemma paucicostata during the active tillering stage of rice, the value of weed control due to the dominance of water foxtail was 77~78%. The death and subsequent decay of water foxtail during the active tillering stage of rice induced the soil reduction which again defect the growth of rice root. The more vigerous rice growth was observed in the plot dominated with water foxtails, than control plot. The yields of rice in the water foxtail (degree 6) plot was 629kg per l0a as brown rice, the same as that of control plot. In conclusion, the no-tillage transplanting with control of covering degree of water foxtail (to degree 6) was effective in reduction of input cost such as herbicide and nitrogen fertilizer, as well as weed control without reduction of rice yield.
This experiment was conducted to identify the growth and yield differences in rice cultural types: Broadcasting on flooded paddy surface(BF), drilling on flooded paddy surface(DF), puddled-soil drill seeding(PD), drill seeding on dried paddy flat(DD), and machine transplanting of lO-day old seedling(MT) at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995. Among the cultural types of direct seeding, the number of seedling stand showed high in order of DD>BF>DF>PD. Tillering at early growth stage was faster in MT and effective tiller showed higher in MT than in direct seeding. Growth duration from seeding to heading was longer in direct seeding than in MT for 2-13 days of Dongjinbyeo and 10-18 days of Nonganbyeo. Root distribution ratio at the surface soil revealed high in order of BF>DF>PD>DD and MT. Culm wall thickness of 4th internode was thicker in machine transplanting of 10-day old seedling than in direct seeding, and the depth of buried culm showed deep by turns of MT> DD>PD>DF and BF. The height of center gravity and moment related to lodging revealed higher in direct seeding than machine transplanting that resulted high lodging index by turns of BF>DF>DD> PD among the direct seeding cultural type. Lodging was occured seriously in the order of BF>DF>PD>DD =MT in Dongjinbyeo but wasn't significantly different in Nonganbyeo among the cultural type. The yield components and grain yield showed varietal differences but was not significantly different between in MT and in direct seeding, and among cultural types of direct seeding.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the concentration of nutrient solution on the growth of tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. seokwang) in substrate culture. The substrates used in the experiment were perlite, vermiculite, and peatmoss. Tomato plants were treated with different concentrations of nutrient solution, viz. 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 5.0mS/cm at seedling stage and transferred to different treatments, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0mS/cm after transplanting in each substrate. As the concentrations of nutrient solution increased from 0.5 to 3.0mS/cm at seedling stage, the $CO_2$ assimilation rates of seedlings increased in all three substrate culture. Beyond this range, the $CO_2$ assimilation rates of seedlings decreased. By increasing the concentrations of nutrient solution, plant height, leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter, and top dry weight increased in perlite and were high at 2-5mS/cm in vermiculite. On the other hand, in peatmoss, the best result was shown at 3.0mS/cm. Therefore, the adequate concentration of nutrient solution on early growth of seedlings differed among substrates and was shown to be 3.0-5.0mS/cm in perlite, 2.0-5.0mS/cm in vermiculite, and 3.0mS/cm in peatmoss. Generally, as the concentrations of nutrient solution increased from 1.0 to 3.0mS/cm after transplanting, dry weight increased significantly in all three substrate culture. However, dry weights of tomato plants grown under high concentration of 5.0mS/cm slightly increased both at seedling stage and after transplanting.
In the new changing scenario, the goal of agriculture is shifting from traditional to sustainable and environment-friendly agriculture. Therefore, in this experiment, we analyzed economic efficiency of two methods of rice cultivation i.e. new cultural method and conventional method, at farmers' fields. In the new cultural method, cost of materials and machines (rice-transplanting and sowing machine) was found 245% higher than the conventional method. Depreciation of cost and working hours were also higher in the new cultural method by 1.9 and 1.1 time, respectively. However, cost of seeds and seedbed soil were 44.0% and 49.2% lower and total material cost was 4.4% lower than the conventional method. In the new cultural method, overall working cost of nursery raising and transplanting per 10a was 229.8% higher than the conventional method. However, in spite of high input cost, yield of rice in new cultural method was higher by 6.7% than the conventional method. Our results showed that new cultural method was better than the conventional method except the input cost. If government provide 80% subsidy for machine cost then its input cost will be reduced by 45.4% than the conventional method.
For the investigation of the potentials of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi on pine seedlings for reforestation on fire-damaged forest lands, six months old seedlings of Pinus densiflora, which were artificially inoculated or non-inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius, were transplanted into the fire-damaged forest land. Seedling mortality was recorded as 3.5% for the seedlings inoculated with P. tinctorius at three months after transplanting, while it was 70.5% for the non-inoculated seedlings. Mycorrhizal root formation was shown as typically Y-branched type, and thier rate was 82% for inoculated seedlings, but it was 52% for non-inoculated. Comaprisons in seedling height, fresh weight, and dry weight between pine seedlings inoculated or non-inoculated with P. tinctorius at every 3 months till 9 months after transplanting showed that the inoculated seedlings were much better in all criteria as compared to the non-inoculated at the level of 63%, 35%, 18% in seedling height, 206%, 114%, 70% in fresh weight, and 187%, 109%, 63% in dry weight, respectively. The percentages were decreased by the elapse of time, which indicate that P. tinctorius give a growth-stimulating effects on seedlings at the early stage. T/R ratio for inoculated and non-inoculated seedlings after 9 months was 1.75 and 1.90, respectively.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the proper seeding methed for direct seeding culture of rice in puddled soil at ill-drained paddy field. Mangeumbyeo was seeded on May 11 with drill seeder attached to cultivater, dibbling seeder attached to transplanter and power dust blower. And to determine the proper flooding time after seeding, Mangeumbyeo was seeded on May 7 and June 1 with drill seeder. Emergence ratio wasn't significantly different between drill seeder seeding and dibbling seeder seeding but emergence was very low with power dust blower. Working hour for seeding was shortened in the order of power dust blower, drill seeder and dibbling seeder, and these seeding methods saved the working hour remarkably compared with machine transplanting of infant seedling by omitting the procedures of raising seedling and transplanting. Lodging occurred slightly in all seeding methods. However, yield wasn't significantly different between machine transplanting of infant seeding and direct seeding culture in puddled soil except power dust blower. When field was flooded on seeding date, the emergence period was shortened, emergence ratio was increased and weed occurrence was decreased. Yield was highest when flooding was done on seeding date as the number of panicle per m$^2$ and the number of spikelets per m$^2$ were higher than any other flooding time.
This study was conducted to obtain the information on dry matter productivity in Angelica gigas Nakai for establishing the cultivation method. Cultivation methods such as direct seeding on Mar. 31, Apr. 15 and Apr. 30, and transplanting of $8^{\frac{1}{2}}$, 9, 12 months old seedling were investigated. There were similar tendencies in changes of agronomic characters for all cultivation methods. Dry weight started to increase from 120 DAS. Direct seedling showed vigorous growth for aerial part, whereas transplanting showed better underground part. The quadratic polynomial was suitable to dry weight of root after 120 DAS (or DAT) .Short growing time had higher RGR and NAR independent of cultivation method but Direct seeding on Mar. 31 and transplanting of 9 months old seedling had the highest CGRs. LAI was positively correlated with CGR, and CGR had the highest value as $6.74\g/m^2/day$ when LAI was 1.97. RGR and NAR increased as mean temperature was increased and showed the highest value around . The highest net production of leaf and petiole was obtained at 20 and$23^{\circ}C$, respectively.
The newly developed fertilizer is the slow-releasing fertilizer which can be used as a basal fertilizer without no additional fertilization at tillering stage. It has 30-4-6% of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and was coated with mixture of LDPE (Low density polyethylene), EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate), BDP (Bio degraded polymer), TALC and nonionic surfactant for the controlled release up to 50 days after application. Coating materials were designed to be decomposed naturally. This fertilizer can be applied directly to the seedling tray mechanically just before transplanting, resulting in significant labor saving effect. The developed slow-release fertilizer, which can replace both basal fertilization and top dressing at tillering stage by single application directly to seedling tray, showed the highest release at 14~21 days after transplanting. Considering the plant growth at different growth stages and yield, the optimal application rate of developed slow-release fertilizer was 300 g per rice nursery tray and the yield of rice at this application rate was 5.25 MT/ha. Rice quality in terms of head rice grain ratio, amylose content, whiteness, and taste value decreased as fertilization rate increased from 200 g to 500 g per nursery tray. Fertilization rate based on quantity of fertilizer ingredients (N, P, K) was reduced by 49.3% compared to the standard application rate and there was 49.2% reduction in labor input for fertilization.
