Naesosan(NSS) has been used in Oriental Medicine as a drug that treated carbuncle and cellulitis. So, the purpose of this Study was to investigate effects of NSS on the cytotoxicity of cancer cell lines and lymphocytes in vitro, proliferation of Ll210 cells and lymphocytes in L1210 cells transplanted mice, improvement of blood count in Ll210 cells transplanted mice, tumor weight and body weight in sarcoma-180 cells transplanted mice, survival prolongation in sarcoma-180 cells transplanted mice. We used NSS extract with freeze-dried, 8wks-old male mice(balb/c and ICR mouse $18{\pm}2g$). Ll210 cell lines, and sarcoma-180 cell lines for this Study, The proliferation of cells was tested using a colorimetric tetrazoliun assay(MTT assay). The results of this Study were obtained as follows ; 1. NSS showed significantly cytotoxicitic effects of cancer cell lines, did not show cytotoxicitic effects of lymphocytes. 2, Proliferation of lymphocytes in L1210 cells transplanted mice did not effects by NSS. 3. NSS inhibited significantly the proliferation of L1210 cells in L1210 cells transplanted mice. 4. NSS improved significantly the blood count in Ll210 cells transplanted mice. 5. NSS increased significantly th body weight in sarcoma-180 cells transplanted mice. 6. NSS dereased significantly the tumor weight in sarcoma-180 cells transplanted mice. 7. NSS prolonged significantly the survival time in sarcoma-180 cells transplanted mice.
The intact dental pulps which were free of their tooth bud from adult rat incisors, and oral mucosa were transplanted subcutaneously in homologous rats to study the formation of calcified tissue. The rat were sacrificed after 1,2,3 and 4 weeks following transplantation of dental pulp and oral mucosa. The samples which contained the transplanted and surrounding tissue were fixed in 10% NBF, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, alizarin red S, von Kossa, and alcian blue. Microscopic examinstins revealed as follows: 1. The transplanted oral mucosas were not calcified but tended to form the epithelial cysts. 2. At 1 week after transplantation of dental pulp the calcified structures were appeared at the periphery of the transplantation of dental pulp but weakly reacted to alizarin red S, von Kossa, and alcian blue. 3. At 2 weeks after transplantation of dental pulp the calcified structures began to expand from the periphery to the center of the transplanted dental pulp and occupied the large areas comparatively, and strongly reacted to alizarin red S, and von Kossa stains. 4. At 3 weeks after transplantation of pulp tissue the fibrous components were grown at the periphery of the transplanted pulp tissuesand at 4 weeks a large amount of fibrous tissues were observed. The transplanted pulp tissue tended to form foreign bodies gradually.
Naetakcheonkeumsan(NCS) was a drug that treated carbuncle and cellulitis. So, the purpose of this Study was to investigate effect of NCS on the anti-cancer and proliferation of lymphocytes in normal mouse group, L1210 cells-transplanted mouse group and anti-cancer drug (vincristine) 0.005mg/kg were injected mouse(Ll210 cells-transplanted) group. We used NCS extract with freeze-dried, 8wks-old male mice, and Ll210 cell lines for this Study, The proliferation of cells was tested using a colorimetric tetrazoliun assay(MTT assay). The results of this Study were obtained as follow ; Group C(NCS plus Rehmanniae Radix Preparat administered group) inhibited proliferaion of lymphocytes in normal mouse group and Ll210 cells transplanted mouse group. Group A(NCS administered group) and Group B(NCS plus Cervi pantotrichum Cornu administered group) inhibited proliferation of Ll210 cells in Ll210 cells-transplanted mouse group and anti-cancer drug were injected mouse(Ll210 cells-transplanted) group. Group C incresed proliferation of L1210 cells in L1210 cells-transplanted mouse group, but inhibited in anti-cancer drug(vincristine) 0.005mg/kg were injected mouse(L1210 cells-transplanted) group.
Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, was transplanted reciprocally between contaminated site (St. STP) and relatively less contaminated site (St. UB) in Onsan Bay, Korea in order to estimate heavy metal accumulation and release. Transplanted and indigenous mussels were collected 8 times over 108 days deployment at both sites and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn using ICP/MS. Cu and Zn concentration did not show any significant differences between transplanted and indigenous mussels throughout the experiment period, although dissolved Cu and Zn concentrations in seawater were significantly higher at contaminated site. Pb accumulated rapidly, while Cd did not show any accumulation in the mussels transplanted from St. UB to St. STP. These accumulation patterns might reflect the variation of dissolved metal concentration; dissolved Pb concentration was significantly higher in St. STP than St. UB, while dissolved Cd concentration was similar between both sites throughout this experiment. Release of Cd and Pb in the mussels transplanted from St. STP to St. UB was not significant during the transplantation period. The levels and variation of Pb and Cd concentrations in mussels transplanted from St. STP to St. UB were similar to those in the indigenous mussels at St. STP throughout the period. Therefore, Cd and Pb accumulated in indigenous mussels may indicate the integrated metals throughout their lives, not responding to the present status of seawater because the release of accumulated metals in mussels occurs very slowly when the seawater metal levels are lowered. On the other hand, since the transplanted mussels can respond immediately to the levels of metals in seawater, it may be suggested that the present status of heavy metals in seawater can be only acquired from the metal levels of mussels transplanted from clean environments.
These experiments were conducted to investigate effects of glycyrrhizin (GL) on apoptosis of transplanted-L1210 cells in mice. GL induced apoptosis of transplanted-Ll2lO cells. GL increased nitric oxide production from peritoneal macrophages of L1210 cells-transplanted mice. NOC12, nitric oxide donor, induced apoptosis of L1210 cells in vitro. The apoptosis of L1210 cells were enhanced by co-culture of the peritoneal macrophages of GL-administered mice and L1210 cells in vitro, and was inhibited by L-NMMA. These results suggest that the apoptosis of transplanted-Ll2lO cells is partly induced by nitric oxide produced from peritoneal macrophages in GL-administered mice.
We have previously observed that glycyrrhizin(GL) inhibits the proliferation of transplanted-L1210 cells via the production of nitric oxide from peritoneal macrophages. In the present study, we examined the effect of GL on Iymphocytes subpopulation change of L1210 cells-transplanted mice. GL increased the population of $CD4^-CD8^+$ cells of thymocytes in L1210 cells-transplanted mice and the lucigenin chemiluminescence of human polymorphonuclear cells. These results suggest that the proliferation of transplanted-L1210 cells is partly inhibited by an enhancement of cytotoxic T cells population and phagocytic activity in GL-administered mice.
We determined whether the ultrarapid freezing method is applicable to micromanipulated mouse embryos. One-cell mouse embryos were microinjected with MThGH gene. Nuclei from one-cell embryos of F1(C57BL$\times$CBA) mice were transplanted into enucleated one-cell embryos of ICR mice. The injected and nucleated embryos that developed to 2-cell stage were cryopreserved by ultrarapidfreezing. The embryos equilibrated in freezing medium(3 M DMSO+0.25 M sucrose+2% FBS in PBS) were directly immersed into liquid nitrogen and then thawed in 37$^{\circ}C$ water. Development rates of the microinjected and nuclear-transplanted embryos to blastocyst stage after ultrarapidly freezing and thawing were 31% and 55%, respectively. The frozen-thawed embryos were transferred to pseudopregnant recipient, which then gave birth to 17 offsprings. Twelve(14% of the transferred embryos) and five(20%) offsprings were derived from microinjected and nuclear-transplanted embryos, respectively. The results indicate that the DNA injected and nuclear-transplanted mouse embryos are cryopreservable at 2-cell stage by ultrarapid freezing method.
To assess the trophic function of an artificial macroalgal habitat, we compared the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of two amphipods (Caprella sp. and Ampithoe sp.) and their potential food sources in a transplanted macroalgal habitat (Grateloupia asiatica) with those in a natural habitat. There were no significant differences in the isotopic values of both consumers and their potential food sources between the transplanted and natural habitats. Such isotopic similarities between the two sites indicate a comparable resource consumer relationship. Additionally, our results showed similar isotopic niche areas and high dietary overlap (>65%) of the two amphipods between the transplanted and natural sites, suggesting that the transplanted habitat plays ecological roles similar to the natural habitat. Overall, isotopic assessment can provide information on the trophic function of diverse transplanted macroalgal habitats and improve post-monitoring efforts in the management of artificial ecosystems.

Three different transplanting dates for two rice cultivars grown in Daegu, Republic of Korea, were examined to identify the changes in growth, rice quality, and characteristics of amylopectin. An early transplanting date caused a reduction in the number of panicles in both rice cultivars compared to that in the optimal and late transplanting dates. The 1000-grain weight in the two rice cultivars was significantly increased in the late transplanting date. The rice cultivar tolerant to high temperatures, Donganbyeo, exhibited the lowest milky grain rate in the late transplanting date. The highest rate of head grain was observed in the late transplanting date in both rice cultivars. Regarding the pattern of pasting properties, peak viscosity increased with delayed transplanting dates. With respect to changes in the amylopectin branch-chain length distribution, the amylopectin structure of the translucent Dongan rice cultivar transplanted on April 25 was characterized by a significant increase in A chains with DP > 12, and a decrease in long chains $DP{\geq}37$ compared to that transplanted on June 25. In contrast, the amylopectin structure of the chalky Dongan rice cultivar transplanted on April 25 exhibited further decrease in 13 < DP < 19 than that transplanted on June 25. In the Ungwang rice cultivar, the amylopectin structure of the translucent Ungwang rice cultivar transplanted on April 25 and June 25 was characterized by a significant decrease in the lengths of total amylopectin chains. Furthermore, the amylopectin structure of the chalky Ungwangbyeo rice cultivar transplanted on April 25 was characterized by a significant increase in 7 < DP < 30, while a significant decrease was observed in that transplanted on June 25. These results indicate that the amylopectin structure is altered by different transplanting dates depending on the characteristics of the rice cultivar.
This study explored the perception of transplanted English prosody by thirty American and Korean, male and female listeners. The English utterances of various sentence types produced by Korean and American male speakers were employed to transplant the American prosody contours to Korean English utterances. Then, the thirty subjects were instructed to rate the transplanted prosodic components. Results showed that the interactions between the three factors (e.g., rater groups & transplantation types; transplantation types & sentence types; rater groups & transplantation types & sentence types) turned out to be meaningful. Both Americans and Koreans perceived the effectiveness of the combined effect of transplanted duration and pitch or duration and pitch and intensity. However, when perceiving individual prosodic components, Americans and Koreans showed different perceptual ratings. As for the overall prosody change, Americans perceived the change of intensity in a significant way but Koreans did not because intensity is not a crucial semantic factor in Korean. Americans rated the transplantation of duration alone as ineffective while Koreans rated otherwise. This was explained by the difference between English and Korean. The difference of perspective was also significant with different sentence types, especially with the three sentence types that had speech rates slower than other sentence types. A slower speech rate intensified the mismatch between the transplanted duration and the original pitch causing a negative impression on American listeners whereas this did not affect Korean listeners. Pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed.
