Optical Properties of a Proton-implanted Nd:CNGG Planar Waveguide

  • The work reports on the fabrication of an optical planar waveguide in the Nd:CNGG crystal by the 0.4-MeV hydrogen ion implantation with a fluence of $8.0{\times}10^{16}ions/cm^2$. The nuclear energy loss of the implanted hydrogen ions was derived by using SRIM 2013 code. The microscope image of the proton-implanted Nd:CNGG crystal cross section was captured by a metallographic microscope. The transmittance spectra were recorded before and after the ion implantation. The light intensity distribution of the planar waveguide at 632.8 nm was experimentally measured to validate its effect on one dimension confinement. The investigation shows that the proton-implanted Nd:CNGG waveguide is a candidate for an optoelectronic integrated device.

  • Near-infrared (NIR) system was used to determine rapidly and simply indomethacin in buffer solution for a dissolution test for tablets and capsules. Indomethacin standards were prepared ranging from 10 to 50ppm using mixture of phosphate buffer(pH 7,2) and water(1:4), The near infrared(NIR) transmittance spectra of indomethacin standard solutions were collected by using a quartz cell in 1 mm and 2mm pathlength, Partial least-square regression (PLSR) was explored to develop calibration models over the spectral range 1100-1700nm.   • Multi-period low-emissivity (low-e) filters based on [TiO$_2$|Ti|Ag|TiO$_2$] layer structure were designed and fabricated by a RF magnetron sputtering method. Optical, structural, chemical, and electrical properties were investigated with various analytical tools. Interface layers consisting of Ag, Ti, and O were observed next to Ag layers by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) analysis. The results show that Ti layers of ~ 1.8 nm protect the Ag layers from oxidation better than those of ~ 1 nm and the optical spectra of the filter with thicker Ti layers are in agreement with the simulated one. The average transmittance of a low-e filter with thicker Ti layers is reduced and the sheet resistance is slightly increased due to the increased Ti thickness.

Optical, Structural and Photo-catalytic properties of TiO2 thin films prepared by using Ti-naphthenate (Ti-naphthenate를 이용하여 제조한 광감응성 TiO2 박막의 광학적 및 구조적 특성)

  • Photo-reactive $TiO_2$ thin films on soda-lime-silica slide glass were prepared by spin coating technique with a Ti-naphthenate precursor. Optical, structural and photo-catalytic properties of the films after annealing at $500^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ were evaluated. As increase with annealing temperature, absorption bands and total transmittance of the films showing an average transmittance (about 80%) at visible spectra range were shifted to UV spectra range and slightly decreased. Refractive index and thickness of the films were increased from 2.16 to 2.63 and decreased from 484 nm to 439 nm, respectively, with increase of annealing temperature. Anatase phase was visible at all annealing temperature. More rougher surface structure was obtained at $600^{\circ}C$ than those of films annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$. The hydrophilic conversion was found within 45 min by UV stimulation and optical activation was UVC>UVA>UVB at the case of $500^{\circ}C{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ and UVA>UVC>UVB at the annealing temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. The lowest initial contact angle was obtained at $600^{\circ}C$.

  • In this work we have investigated electrical and optical properties of interface for ITO/Si with shallow doped emitter. The ITO is prepared by DC magnetron sputter on p-type monocrystalline silicon substrate. As an experimental result, The transmittance at 640nm spectra is obtained an average transmittance over 85% in the visible range of the optical spectrum. The energy bandgap of ITO at oxygen flow from 0% to 4% obtained between 3.57eV and 3.68eV (ITO : 3.75eV). The energy bandgap of ITO is depending on the thickness, sturcture and doping concentration. Because the bandgap and position of absorption edge for degenerated semiconductor oxide are determined by two competing mechanism; i) bandgap narrowing due to electron-electron and electron-impurity effects on the valance and conduction bands (> 3.38eV), ii) bandgap widening by the Burstein-Moss effect, a blocking of the lowest states of the conduction band by excess electrons( < 4.15eV). The resistivity of ITO layer obtained about $6{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ at 4% of oxygen flow. In case of decrease resistivity of ITO, the carrier concentration and carrier mobility of ITO film will be increased. The contact resistance of ITO/Si with shallow doped emitter was measured by the transmission line method(TLM). As an experimental result, the contact resistance was obtained $0.0705{\Omega}cm^2$ at 2% oxygen flow. It is formed ohmic-contact of interface ITO/Si substrate. The emitter series resistance of ITO/Si with shallow doped emitter was obtained $0.1821{\Omega}cm^2$. Therefore, As an PC1D simulation result, the fill factor of EWT solar cell obtained above 80%.   • A diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were deposited on the borosilicate glass substrate by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical deposition(rf-PECVD). The $methane(CH_4)-hydrogen(H_2)$ gas mixture was used as precursor gas. The morphologies, the structure and the optical properties of the DLC films were investigated by SEM, Raman and UV spectrometer. The deposition rate was slightly increased with the hydrogen concentration in the gas mixture and it maintained constant at over 25 sccm of the gas flow rate. The optical band gap calculated by UV spectra decreased with increase of deposition time and DC self bias, but that were not effected by hydrogen content. Most effective parameter on the transmittance of film was bias voltage, especially in the range of ultra violet and visible light.

  • $YVO_{4}$ and Nd:$YVO_{4}$ single crystals have been grown developed Edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) method and the crystals were measured on optical properties. $YVO_{4}$ and Nd:$YVO_{4}$ single crystal were transparent, high quality due to homogeneity of surface temperature of the melt and stability of meniscus during crystal growth. In transmittance and absorption spectra, Nd:$YVO_{4}$ single crystals had absorption peaks at wavelengths of 532, 593, 753, 808, 888 though $YVO_{4}$ single crystal had a broad transmittance at wavelength ranging from 340 to 1000nm. Also, Nd:$YVO_{4}$ single crystals had emissions of energy at range of 800~900 nm in photoluminescence (PL) spectrum.

  • Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) thin films have been fabricated by the rf magnetron sputtering technique with a target of a mixture $In_{2}O_{3}$ (90mol%) and $SnO_{2}$ (10mol%). We prepared ITO thin films with substrate temperature 100, 200, 300, 400, $500^{\circ}C$ and post-annealing temperature 300, 400, $500^{\circ}C$. And we analyzed X -ray diffraction patterns, electrical properties, transmission spectra and SEM photographs. As a result, the crystallinity, electrical conductivity and transmittance of ITO thin films were improved with increasing substrate temperature. But, as increasing post-annealing temperature in air, conductivity of the film was decreased. When the ITO thin film was fabricated with substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and thickness of $3000{\AA}$, its resistivity and transmittance were about $2{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ and 85% or more, respectively.

Evaluation of Ultraviolet Blocking of Ophthalmic Lenses (안경렌즈의 자외선 차단 평가)

  • Purpose: To evaluate ultraviolet (UV) blocking characteristics of transparent and tinted ophthalmic lenses. Methods: The transmittance spectra of ophthalmic lenses were measured using the method suggested in ANSI Z80.1 standard. Transmittance percentage were calculated for each lens for UV (200~380 nm; UVA, UVB, UVC) and blue light portions (380~400 nm) of spectrum. Results: The results indicate that transparent plastic lenses with middle, high refractive index and tinted plastic lenses had superior UV blocking characteristics at UV radiation while UV blocker-untreated lenses such as crown glasses and CR39 did not. All except high refractive index lenses and anti-glare night vision lens was not effectively blocked blue light. Conclusions: Crown glass and CR39 lenses need to treat UV blockers to protect eyes from UV. Also, all lenes except high refractive index lenses and anti-glare night vision lens need to treat blue light blockers for protecting from blue light.

  • UV-thermal dually curable coating materials were prepared by the sol-gel method. Nano-sized colloidal boehmite was treated with various organo silane coupling agents. These materials could be well dispersed in various alcohols and relatively polar organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile. The coating films were prepared by a spin coating method on various substrates, which were characterized by FT-IR, Si/Al CP MAS NMR spectra, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FE-SEM, Taber abraser, haze meter, and pencil hardness tester. The effects of molar ratio and types of silane coupling agents, curing method and ion-shower treatment were investigated. Dually curable coating method offered an optimally good quality film in both hardness and transmittance. The transparency and the hardness of the prepared films were increased with amounts of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate, and (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane, respectively. The adhesion between coated layer and substrate could be enhanced by ion-shower treatment.
