  • Using FEM, we analyzed the stress changes on early osteonecrosis of femoral head as the necrotic area increases. A 3D FEM model of proximal femur was made from the CT scam data of fresh frozen adult proximal femur with the material properties from literature. The model consisted of 5994 elements and 5275 nodes. FE analyses were peformed using MSC/NASTRAN. At normal states, stress transmission is mainly along the primary compression trabeculae(PCT). Until 60% involvement of PCT with necrotic lesion, stress transmission is still along the remained PCT. When the PCT involvement is from 60% to 85%, stress transmission is along the PCT and margin of the necrotic lesion. When involvement is more than 85%, stress is mostly transferred to posterior part of femoral head.

  • It is well known that monolithic glass has specific coincidence dip allowing transmittance of noise around the critical frequency. Laminated glass, made of a polyvinyle butyral(PVB) interlayer sandwiched by two panes of glass sheet, has long served for the advantage in noise attenuation properties as well as the safety purpose. More research on the improvement of sound insulation performance is needed, considering much of the noise is still transmitted through the glass. As a preliminary study, authors have made several test specimens, varied combinations of glass and interlayer film, to optimize the acoustic performance. Experimental investigation was carried out to study the sound transmission loss of test specimens in the reverberation chamber by using sound intensity method. Several new applications, instead of the existing PVB laminated glass, show better results in sound transmission loss and low temperature have a bad influence on the acoustic performance.

  • Isotropic conductive adhesives (ICAs) have been used or considered as an interconnect material for radio frequency identification (RFID) inlays or other flip chip assemblies due to the advantages of having a low temperature and high-speed bonding. In this work, the curing properties of commercial ICAs for the RFID tag application and the signal transmission in conductive lines that contained the ICA joints were evaluated as a function of the degree of cure at 900 MHz frequency range. The ICAs showed adequate signal transmission only after the curing process passed over the critical time. It was also found that the insertion loss of signal was more dependent on the contact states of Ag fillers in the bondline in preference to the electrical resistance of the ICA itself.

  • The movement of soil along a slope during rainfall can cause serious economic damage and can jeopardize human life. Accordingly, predicting slope stability during rainfall is a major issue in geotechnical engineering. Due to rainwater penetrating the soil, the negative pore water pressure will decrease, in turn causing a loss of shear strength in the soil and ultimately slope failure. More seriously, many constructions such as houses and transmission towers built in/on slopes are at risk when the slopes fail. In this study, the numerical simulation using 2D finite difference program, which can solve a fully coupled hydromechanical problems, was used to evaluate the effects of soil properties, rainfall conditions, and the location of a foundation on the slope instability and slope failure mechanisms during rainfall. A slope with a transmission tower located in Namyangju, South Korea was analyzed in this study. The results showed that the correlation between permeability and rainfall intensity had an important role in changing the pore water pressure via controlling the infiltrated rainwater. The foundation of the transmission tower was stable during rainfall because the slope failure was estimated to occur at the toe of the slope, and did not go through the foundation.

  • Leakage and Bragg condition of optical waveguide with asymmetric rectangular grating profile are evaluated in detail by using novel and rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on eigenvalue problem. The optical waveguide composed by asymmetric rectangular grating occur leaky-wave stop-bands at Bragg conditions, and anomalies based on Rayleigh-Wood condition near Bragg conditions. Furthermore, DFB properties of the guiding structure at Bragg conditions are analyzed by applying longitudinal equivalent transmission-line with characteristic impedance of periodic grating. The numerical results show that filtering characteristics that maximize the reflected power of DFB waveguide are activated near Bragg conditions, in which leaky-wave stop-bands occur.

  • A transmission class high-temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable system is being developed in Korea. For insulation design of this cable the grading method of insulating paper is proposed. Two kinds of laminated polypropylene paper that has different thickness has been used as the electrical insulation material. The use of graded insulation gives improved mechanical bending properties of the cable. In a HTS cable technology the terminations are important components. A HTS cable termination is energized with the line-to-ground voltage between the coaxial center and outer surrounding conductors. in the axial direction. There is also a temperature difference from ambient to about 77 K. For insulation design of this termination, glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) was used as the insulation material of the termination body, and the capacitance-graded method is proposed. This paper will report on the experimental investigations on impulse breakdown and surface flashover characteristics of the insulation materials for insulation design of a transmission class HTS power cable and termination. Based on these experimental data, the electrical insulation design of a transmission class HTS power cable and termination was carried out.

  • Stability analysis and support system estimation of the Beheshtabad water transmission tunnel is investigated in this research. A combination approach based on the rock mass rating (RMR) and rock mass quality index (Q) is used for this purpose. In the first step, 40 datasets related to the petrological, structural, hydrological, physical, and mechanical properties of tunnel host rocks are measured in the field and laboratory. Then, RMR, Q, and height of influenced zone above the tunnel roof are computed and sorted into five general groups to analyze the tunnel stability and determine its support system. Accordingly, tunnel stand-up time, rock load, and required support system are estimated for five sorted rock groups. In addition, various empirical relations between RMR and Q i.e., linear, exponential, logarithmic, and power functions are developed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Based on the significance level (sig.), determination coefficient (R2) and Fisher-test (F) indices, power and logarithmic equations are proposed as the optimum relations between RMR and Q. To validate the proposed relations, their results are compared with the results of previous similar equations by using the variance account for (VAF), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean absolute error (MAE) indices. Comparison results showed that the accuracy of proposed RMR-Q relations is better than the previous similar relations and their outputs are more consistent with actual data. Therefore, they can be practically utilized in designing the tunneling projects with an acceptable level of accuracy and reliability.

  • In this paper, the effect of semi-rigid connections on the stability bearing capacity of cross-bracings in steel tubular transmission towers is investigated. Herein, a prediction method based on the hybrid model which is a combination of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and backpropagation neural network (BPNN) is proposed to accurately predict the stability bearing capacity of cross-bracings with semi-rigid connections and to efficiently conduct its probabilistic assessment. Firstly, the establishment of the finite element (FE) model of cross-bracings with semi-rigid connections is developed on the basis of the development of the mechanical model. Then, a dataset of 7425 samples generated by the FE model is used to train and test the PSO-BPNN model, and the accuracy of the proposed method is evaluated. Finally, the probabilistic assessment for the stability bearing capacity of cross-bracings with semi-rigid connections is conducted based on the proposed method and the Monte Carlo simulation, in which the geometric and material properties including the outer diameter and thickness of cross-sections and the yield strength of steel are considered as random variables. The results indicate that the proposed method based on the PSO-BPNN model has high accuracy in predicting the stability bearing capacity of cross-bracings with semi-rigid connections. Meanwhile, the semi-rigid connections could enhance the stability bearing capacity of cross-bracings and the reliability of cross-bracings would significantly increase after considering semi-rigid connections.

  • Various metallic materials are coated on Fe base materials via thermal spraying or welding process to improve both corrosion resistance as well as erosion resistance of the Fe base materials used in buildings and special works. The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coat are estimated by means of hardness measurement and anodic polarization test. In additions, the effect of alloying elements and microstructure of the coatings on the mechanical and chemical properties of the coat is investigated using X- ray diffraction, Optical microscope, Transmission electron microscopy and Auger analysis. The coating deposited by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding exhibit a good combination of hardness and corrosion properties.
