This work investigates Reynolds number Re (= 50 - 200) effects on the flows around a single cylinder and the two tandem (center-to-center spacing L⁎= L/D = 4) cylinders, each of a diameter D. Vorticity structures, Strouhal numbers, and time-mean and fluctuating forces are presented and discussed. For the single cylinder, with increasing Re in the range examined, the vorticity magnitude, Strouhal number and fluctuating lift all monotonically rise but time-mean drag, vortex formation length, and lateral distance between the two rows of vortices all shrink. For the two tandem cylinders, the increase in Re leads to the formation of three distinct flows, namely reattachment flow (50 ≤ Re ≤ 75), transition flow (75 < Re < 100), and coshedding flow (100 ≤ Re ≤ 200). The reattachment flow at Re = 50 is steady. When Re is increased from 75 to 200, the Strouhal number of the two cylinders, jumping from 0.113 to 0.15 in the transition flow regime, swells to 0.188. The two-cylinder flow is more sensitive to Re than the single cylinder flow. Fluctuating lift is greater for the downstream cylinder than the upstream cylinder while time-mean drag is higher for the upstream cylinder than for the other. The time-mean drags of the upstream cylinder and single cylinder behaves similar to each other, both declining with increasing Re.
A response of a swept wing boundary layer to a single free-stream stationary axial vortex of a limited spanwise extent is considered as an example of typical problems that one can find in laminar-turbulent transition research and control. The response is dominated by streamwise velocity perturbations that grow quasi-exponentially downstream. It is shown that the formation of the boundary layer disturbance occurs for the most part close to the leading edge. The disturbance represents itself a wave packet consisted of the waves with characteristics specific for cross-flow instability. However, an admixture of growing disturbances whose origin can be attributed to transient effects and to a distributed receptivity mechanism is also identified.
This study investigates the transition of flows in a natural convection problem with periodic wall temperatures of the form, T/sub L/=T₁+δ Tsinκχ and T/sub L/=T₂+δ Tsinκχ .The fluid considered is air with P/sub γ/=0.7. In the conduction-dominated regime with a small Rayleigh number, two large cells are formed over one wave length, for all wave numbers. When k≤1.8, the flow becomes unstable with increase of the Rayleigh number, and multicellular convection occurs above a critical Rayleigh number. The flow patterns are classified by the number of eddies over one wave length, and several kinds of transition phenomena, such as 2→3→4, 4→3→2, and 2→4 eddy flow, occur with increase( or decrease) of the Rayleigh number. Dual solutions are found above a critical Rayleigh number, and an anomalous bifurcation is observed.
Glass transition phenomena in nine Korean pure honeys (moisture content 18.3~20.1%) and honey-water mixtures by different water contents (0, 2, 5, and 10% w/w) were investigated with modulated different scanning calorimetry (MDSC). The total, reversing, and non-reversing heat flows were quantified during heating using MDSC. Glass transition was observed from reversing heat flow separated from the total heat flow. The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of pure honeys, which are in the range of $-42.7^{\circ}C$ to $-50.0^{\circ}C$, varied a lot with low determination coefficient ($R^2$=0.63), whereas those of honey-water mixtures decreased with a decrease in honey content. The $T_g$ values were also more significantly different among honey-water mixtures when compared to pure honeys, indicating that in the honey-water mixture system the $T_g$ values appear to be greatly dependent on moisture content. The measured heat capacity change (${\Delta}C_p$) was not influenced by moisture content.

A computational study on unsteady compressible flows has been performed by adopting a low Reynolds number $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model in conjunction with dual time stepping scheme. An explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations and an approximate factorization scheme for the $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model equations are used. Computational results obtained for blade surface pressure distributions in the process of rotor-stator interaction in a turbine stage are in good agreement with extant experimental data. The effects of the wake from the stator on the boundary-layer transition over the rotor blade surface are discussed by showing that high intensity turbulence of the stator wake induces an early transition.
In this study, two and three dimensional low Reynolds number flows are compared. For the two dimensional flow, an airfoil was considered and for the three dimensional low wing and full-body aircraft were considered. Because a flight condition of the aircraft is in a low Reynolds number flow, itl requires reflecting flow transition. In the two dimensional analysis, transition is predicted using en method. In the three dimensional flow, the effect of transition is included using k-w SST turbulence models.

Recently, the frequency of debris flow disaster has increased, which is one of the natural disasters during extremely heavy rainfall condition. This paper described the analysis method about deposition characteristics of debris flow using topographic characteristics of debris flow path. First, we observed topographic changes by differencing high- resolution LiDAR DEMs acquired before and after the occurrence of debris flow event. We assumed that deposition on outside of debris flow path was generated by movements due to the inertia of debris flows. Then, we analyzed three topographic characteristics of debris flow path: slope in flow direction, transition angle of flow path, and the net efficiency(L/H) of debris flows defined by the ratio of transport length(L) and elevation difference(H). We applied this method to Umyeon Mountain debris flow event in July 2011. The results showed that deposition on outside of debris flow path due to the inertia of debris flows was significantly related to the transition angle of debris flow path. Also, we figured out that there were more frequent such depositions in locations where the ratio of 'transition angle / (L/H)' is over 8.

Numerical and experimental investigations are performed for the molecular transition and slip flows in pumping channels of a disk-type drag pump. The flow occurring in the pumping channel develops from the molecular transition to the slip flow traveling downstream. Two different numerical methods are used in this analysis: the first one is a continuum approach in solving the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions, and the second one is a stochastic approach through the use of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. In the experimental study, the inlet pressures are measured for various outlet pressures in the range of 0.1{\sim}4Torr. From the present study, the numerical results of predicting the performance, obtained by both methods, agree well with the experimental data for the range of Knudsen number $Kn{\leq}0.1$ (i.e., the slip flow regime). But the results from the second method only agree with the experimental data for Kn>0.1(i.e., the molecular transition regime)
The purpose of this paper is to perform a basic study on the interaction between lanes, which can be achieved through analyzing traffic breakdown at the microscopic level. Using aerial photographic data for the microscopic analysis, this study analyzed the characteristics of traffic flow at a merging area. This research produced aggregated traffic data such as flows, speeds, and densities in 30 second intervals by lane for the macroscopic analysis and individual headway data by lane for the microscopic analysis. The paper contains an analysis of lane characteristics through flows, speeds, densities, and headway variations and also investigates the influence of ramp flows on mainline flows with space-time diagrams. Firstly, the merging area in this study is divided into three sections: before-merging, during-merging, and after-merging. The transition process was analyzed at each lane. Secondly, the breakdown was observed in detail with data divided in 50-foot units. The breakdown was checked through the relationships between ramp and freeway mainline flows, various techniques were proposed to analyze the breakdown, and the formation of breakdown was introduced as three stages in this study. In the near future, the findings of this study could contribute to determining the dynamic capacity on freeways by easily understanding changeable traffic breakdown patterns over time and space.

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of strongly-heated air flows moving upward in a vertical tube has been conducted to investigate the effect of gas property variations on turbulence modification. Three heating conditions(q$_1$$^{+}$=0.0045, 0.0035 and 0.0018) are selected to reflect the experiment of Shehata and McEligot (1998) at the inlet bulk Reynolds numbers of 4300 and 6000. At these conditions, the flow inside the heated tube remains turbululent or undergoes a transition to subturbulent or laminarizing flow. Consequently, a significant impairment of heat transfer occurs due to the reduction of flow turbulence. The predictions of integral parameters and mean profiles such as velocity and temperature distributions are in excellent agreement with the experiment. The computed turbulence data indicate that a reduction of flow turbulence occurs mainly due to strong flow acceleration effects for strongly-heated internal gas flows. Thus, buoyancy influences are secondary but not negligible especially for turbulent flow at low heating condition. Digital flow visualization also shows that vortical structures rapidly decay as the heating increases.s.
