A Theoretical Study on the Low Transition Temperature of VO2 Metamaterials in the THz Regime

  • Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a well-known material that undergoes insulator-to-metal phase transition near room temperature. Since the conductivity of VO2 changes several orders of magnitude in the terahertz (THz) spectral range during the phase transition, VO2-based active metamaterials have been extensively studied. Experimentally, it is reported that the metal nanostructures on the VO2 thin film lowers the critical temperature significantly compared to the bare film. Here, we theoretically studied such early transition phenomena by developing an analytical model. Unlike experimental work that only measures transmission, we calculate the reflection and absorption and demonstrate that the role of absorption is quite different for bare and patterned samples; the absorption gradually increases for bare film during the phase transition, while an absorption peak is observed at the critical temperature for the metamaterials. In addition, we also discuss the gap width and VO2 thickness effects on the transition temperatures.

  • This study examines the policy direction and specific countermeasures for addressing possible port labour issues from the perspective of Just Transition which may be raised by closing coal fired power plants in Korea. Current energy transition policy and port labour policy in Korea are reviewed and case studies in the countries which has experienced closure of coal fired power plants are undertaken. Although it varies from country to country, a similar approach was found that the employment problem of coal fired power plant closures and measures based on Just Transition regime to mitigate the negative impacts that occur in the region are the key to successful transition. It is suggested that countermeasures for port labour should be institutionalized for providing stakeholders with legal stability covering labours not only directly employed by the plants but also employed in entities in the whole supply chains.

  • 저추진력 추력기라는 것은 추력이 수 N 정도, 노즐출구직경이 수 mm 정도의 소형추력기를 의미하며, 주로 인공위성을 비롯한 우주 비행체의 자세제어, 궤도천이 등의 목적을 위해 사용된다. 따라서, 저추진력 추력기의 일반적인 작동환경은 연속체 영역, 천이영역(transition flow regime), 희박영역(rarefied flow regime)을 모두 포함하므로, 기존의 연속체 유체역학에서 사용되는 Navier-Stokes 방정식을 사용할 수 없고, 분자들의 미시적인 움직임과 내부 에너지 분포를 고려한 Boltzmann 방정식을 이용한 해석을 수행하여야 한다.(중략)

  • 새로운 에너지 기술이 기존 사회시스템과 공존하며 확산되는 과정은 저탄소 사회로의 전환을 위해 꼭 필요하지만 어려운 여정이다. 정부주도로 추진되고 있는 서남해 2.5GW 해상풍력사업은 대용량 신재생에너지발전을 중앙전력계통으로 연계하는 것을 목표로 추진되고 있다. 따라서 성공적인 해상풍력 발전의 도입을 위해서는 기존 사회기술시스템의 전환도 병행되어야 한다. 본 연구는 다층적 관점과 전략적 니치관리를 방법론으로 해상풍력기술의 니치전략 적용에 대한 에너지 시스템 전환을 분석한다. 연구결과로서 새로운 기술이 기존 레짐(regime) - 환경상황(landscape)과 연계, 소통을 거쳐 성장하는 과정을 다층적으로 분석하고 에너지체제와 신기술의 관계의 변화를 구조화 하였다. 또한 전략적 니치관리 연구를 적용하여 니치실험 착수단계에서 내재하는 장애요인을 진단하고 해상풍력 실증사업 지연의 원인을 파악하였다. 이를 통해 해상풍력 니치기술이 에너지체제와 다양한 제도 속에서 안정적으로 성장할 수 있다는 실천적 시사점을 도출하였다.

  • 연소파를 이용한 로켓 점화장치 등에의 응용으로 관내에서 전파되는 데토네이션에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있으나 그 특성에 관하여 알려진 바는 많지 않다. 본 실험적 연구에서는 프로판-산소 혼합기로 채워진 직경 5mm, 길이 30m의 투명한 관을 이용하여 데토네이션 파의 진행을 고속촬영을 통하여 가시화하였다. 평균 속도를 측정한 결과, 압력이 감소함에 따라 정상적인 Chapman-Jouguet(CJ) 모드에서 약 $0.5V_{CJ}$에 이르는 저속 모드로 평균 속도가 감소하는 천이 영역이 존재한다. 관 길이 전체에 걸쳐 데토네이션 전파의 동적 특성을 관찰한 결과, 천이 영역에서는 데토네이션이 매우 불안정하여 주기적이거나 간헐적인 속도의 출렁임이 발생한다.

  • 이상유동은 원자력 발전소 내 노심과 석유 수송 등 여러 산업 분야에서 빈번히 관찰된다. 이상유동영역은 두 상의 성질과 유량의 차이, 그리고 유로의 구조에 따라 결정된다. 유동영역의 판별은 시스템 설계 및 안전 해석에 있어 중요하기 때문에 많은 이론과 실험 연구들이 수행되었다. 본 연구는 파이프 내의 이상유동장에서 각 이상유동영역 및 천이경계에서의 특징 파악을 위한 기초 연구로서, 30 mm의 내경을 갖는 수직관의 수직상향류 공기-물 이상유동영역을 고속카메라와 Wire-mesh sensor(WMS)를 이용하여 판별하였다. 또한 유동양식을 정량적으로 판별하기 위해 액막 두께를 적용하였다. 판별한 실험 데이터를 Taitel 외와 Mishima와 Ishii의 유동양식선도와 비교하였다. 실험을 통해 판별한 유동영역은 기존의 유동양식선도와 전체적으로 잘 일치함을 보였다.

  • The effects of an inserted coil on flow patterns and heat transport performance for a horizontal rotating heat pipe have been studied experimentally. Especially, the present study is to see an internally inserted helical coil inside a RHP would lead to the same kind of results as internal fins. Visualization test conducted for an acryl tube, charged water with at a volumetric rate of 20%. When the flow kept pool regime at a low RPM(less than 1,000 RPM), the movement of coil forced the water to flow in axial direction. But this pumping effect of coil disappeared, when the pool regime changed to annular one which could be created by increasing RPM. The pumping effects for RHP with an inserted coil resulted enhancement both in condensation heat transfer coefficient and heat transport limitation, as obtained in case of using internal fins. But all these effects became negligible in the range of higher RPM(above 1,000∼1,200) with the transition of flow regime to annular flow.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of $0.1\sim0.4%$ aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0\sim600rpm$. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The present results show that the skin-friction coefficients have the significant relation with the Rossby numbers, only for laminar regime. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficients due to the rotation in uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decrease as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of taylor vortices.

Investigation of flow regime in debris bed formation behavior with nonspherical particles

  • It is important to clarify the characteristics of flow regimes underlying the debris bed formation behavior that might be encountered in core disruptive accidents of sodium-cooled fast reactors. Although in our previous publications, by applying dimensional analysis technique, an empirical model, with its reasonability confirmed over a variety of parametric conditions, has been successfully developed to predict the regime transition and final bed geometry formed, so far this model is restricted to predictions of debris mixtures composed of spherical particles. Focusing on this aspect, in this study a new series of experiments using nonspherical particles have been conducted. Based on the knowledge and data obtained, an extension scheme is suggested with the purpose of extending the base model to cover the particle-shape influence. Through detailed analyses and given our current range of experimental conditions, it is found that, by coupling the base model with this scheme, respectable agreement between experiments and model predictions for the regime transition can be achieved for both spherical and nonspherical particles. Knowledge and evidence from our work might be utilized for the future improvement of design of an in-vessel core catcher as well as the development and verification of sodium-cooled fast reactor severe accident analysis codes in China.
