Novel Techniques for Real Time Computing Critical Clearing Time SIME-B and CCS-B

  • Real time transient stability assessment mainly depends on real-time prediction. Unfortunately, conventional techniques based on offline analysis are too slow and unreliable in complex power systems. Hence, fast and reliable stability prediction methods and simple stability criterions must be developed for real time purposes. In this paper, two new methods for real time determining critical clearing time based on clustering identification are proposed. This article is covering three main sections: (i) clustering generators and recognizing critical group; (ii) replacing the multi-machine system by a two-machine dynamic equivalent and eventually, to a one-machine-infinite-bus system; (iii) presenting a new method to predict post-fault trajectory and two simple algorithms for calculating critical clearing time, respectively established upon two different transient stability criterions. The performance is expected to figure out critical clearing time within 100ms-150ms and with an acceptable accuracy.

  • Transient Stability of a power systems is its ability to maintain synchronous operation of machine when subjected to a large disturbance. This paper presents a new methodology for speed-up transient stability evaluation in SIME. SIME is a hybrid direct method including time simulation to enhance flexibility. The First features of the proposed method are that generator grouping can be performed even in very stable cases and that the stability of a contingency can be evaluated from a short period of time simulation results. The second features of the proposed method are that using power-angle trajectory and subdividing contingency classification have improved the screening capability.

  • Preventive control has to solve two important problems. The first is fast and accurate severity assessment of instability originated from the occurrence of a dangerous contingency. The second is to choose an action able to stabilize it. In this paper we assess contingencies in power systems using PASF(Power Angle Shape Filtering) and control power systems by a generation rescheduling. The control action stabilize the whole set of harmful contingencies simultaneously. Note that conventional time-domain transient stability methods can hardly tackle preventive control. So, we study the preventive control using off-line method. The proposed method is applied to prevent and to correct loss of synchronism of all the generators in a operating systems data.

  • The purpose of this work is to explain techniques achieved while developing a transient stability program which is suitable to Korean power system, and to add a module for contingency screening. It concentrates on the development of Contingency Screening Module. In this thesis, a fast contingency screening algorithm SIME(Single Machin Equivalent), which is one of the Hybrid methods for the transient stability assessment is used to develop the contingency screening module. The proposed module is applied to a KEPCO system, and simulation results obtained from the program are compared to those of commercial programs.

  • This paper is to develope the fast screening algorithm for on line transient security assessment. All generators are represented in a classical model and stability index is defined as a ratio between acceleration power and deceleration power Critical machines and remaining machines are identified based on stability index and aggregated into two equivalent machines. And finally equivalent machines are reduced into OMIB system then CCT is computed. The Proposed algorithm is applied to the KEPCO system and obtained the reasonable results compared with TSA Tool.

  • On-line dynamic security assessment is becoming more and more important for the stable operation of power systems as load level increases. The necessity is getting apparent under Electricity Market environments due to more various operating conditions. Fast transient stability analysis tool is required for contingency selection. The TEF(Transient Energy Function) method is a good candidate for this purpose. The clustering of critical generators is crucial for the precise and fast calculation of energy margin. In this paper, we propose a new method for fast decision of mode of instability by using stability indices. Case study shows very promising results.

  • The increasing need to improve transient security assessment of existing or forecasted operating conditions of networks by power system operators is major concern of the power system security monitoring problem at the Energy Management Systems. This paper proposes a preventive control of transient stability with generation rescheduling based on rotor trajectory index obtained using time domain simulations. This index may help power engineers in making operational decision and to obtain a generation configuration with better transient security dispatch. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated on IEEE 39-bus New England system for a three phase fault at different loading conditions with single and multiple line outage cases.

  • This paper describes preventive control for transient stability. Preventive control encompasses in general a twofold problem : Severity assessment of a instability originating from the occurrence of a dangerous contingency, and Choice of an action able to stabilize it. In this paper we assess contingencies in a power systems using PASF(Power Angle Shape Filtering) and control power systems by a generation rescheduling.   • This paper presents a probabilistic method to evaluate the total transfer capability (TTC) by considering the sequential quadratic programming and the uncertainty of weather conditions. After the initial TTC is calculated by sequential quadratic programming (SQP), the transient stability is checked by time simulation. Also because power systems are exposed to a variety of weather conditions the outage probability is increased due to the weather condition. The probabilistic approach is necessary to evaluate the TTC, and the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is used to accomplish the probabilistic calculation of TTC by considering the various weather conditions.
