  • A performance simulation program for the turboprop engine (PT6A-62), which is the power plant of the first Korean indigenous basic trainer KT-1, was developed for performance prediction, development of an EHMS (Engine Health Monitoring System) and the flight simulator. Characteristics of components including compressors, turbines, power turbines and the constant speed propeller were required for the steady state and transient performance analysis with on and off design point analysis. In most cases, these were substituted for what scaled from similar engine components'characteristics with the scaling law. The developed program was evaluated with the performance data provided by the engine manufacturer and with analysis results of GASTURB program, which is well known for the performance simulation of gas turbines. Performance parameters such as mass flow rate, compressor pressure ratio, fuel flow rate, specific fuel consumption and turbine inlet temperature were discussed to evaluate validity of the developed program at various cases. The first case was the sea level static standard condition and other cases were considered with various altitudes, flight velocities and part loads with the range between idle and 105% rotational speed of the gas generator. In the transient analysis, the Continuity of Mass Flow Method was utilized under the condition that mass stored between components is ignored and the flow compatibility is satisfied, and the Modified Euler Method was used for integration of the surplus torque. The transient performance analysis for various fuel schedules was performed. When the fuel step increase was considered, the overshoot of the turbine inlet temperature occurred. However, in case of ramp increase of the fuel longer than step increase of the fuel, the overshoot of the turbine inlet temperature was effectively reduced.

  • In this study, the analytical method to evaluate the response of rotor-bearing system subjected to base excitation was presented. The equations of motion contain speed dependent gyroscopic terms, base rotation dependent parametric terms and several forcing function terms which depend on linear accelerations, rotational accelerations and a combination of linear and rotational combination. The study of rotor-bearing system excited by its base motion is not only able to predict the rotational performance, but provides the fundamental data for vibration isolation. In order to illustrate transient response, transient response analysis of a practical application sample were performed. The transient response was carried out for the given base excitation by using the state-space Newmark method that incorporates the average velocity concept.

  • This paper presents a comparison on the resistance and characteristics of transient response of grounding systems under surge currents using frequency domain electromagnetic field analysis software package and field test. Analysis is done by computer model, based on electromagnetic field theory approach, that accurately takes into account frequency dependent characteristics of the system. The transient performance of three grounding systems is analyzed by comparison of frequency dependent impedance and the maximal transient GPR. A double exponential lighting surge current is injected at one corner of the grounding systems. The transient GPRs a rod grounding systems are higher than mesh or electrolytic grounding systems. Af field test, the results of resistance measurement and time-variant of ground resistance slightly reduce electorlytic grounding systems less than rod and mesh grounding systems.

  • A method to simulate the gas turbine transient behavior is developed. The basic principles of the method and main input data required are described. Calculation results are presented in terms of whole operating regime of the engine. The influence of initial parameters such as starting engine power, moment of inertia of the rotor, fuel schedule on performance characteristics of gas turbine during transient operation is shown. In addition, the effect of bleeding air on transient behavior is also considered. For validation of the developed computer code, a comparative analysis with experimental data obtained from a heavy duty gas turbine is made. Calculation results agree well with the experimental data for the range of operating regime studied and proved applicability of the developed technique to initial design stage of control system.

  • Transient phenomena cause delay in control response and must be studied and eliminated, if possible, suppressed. The difficulty in analyzing transient phenomena in ac machines comes from the large number of windings involved. But, it is possible that only one phase is used to represent three phases of the induction motor as called phase segregation method. The phase segregation method provides equivalent circuits for both the steady and transient states of induction motor. In this paper, analysis of the torque transient of the induction motor be carried out the phase segregation method and confirmed in the possibility of transientless torque control.

  • The load-following operation of small modular reactors (SMRs) requires accurate prediction of transient behaviors that can occur in the balance of plants (BOP) and the nuclear steam supply system (NSSS). However, 1-D thermal-hydraulics analysis codes developed for safety and performance analysis have conventionally excluded the BOP from the simulation by assuming ideal boundary conditions for the main steam and feed water (MS/FW) systems, i.e., an open loop. In this study, we introduced a lumped model of BOP fluid system and coupled it with NSSS without any ideal boundary conditions, i.e., in a closed loop. Various methods for coupling boundary conditions at MS/FW were tested to validate their combination in terms of minimizing numerical instability, which mainly arises from the coupled boundaries. The method exhibiting the best performance was selected and applied to a transient simulation of an integrated NSSS and BOP system of a SMART. For a transient event with core power change of 100-20-100%, the simulation exhibited numerical stability throughout the system without any significant perturbation of thermal-hydraulic parameters. Thus, the introduced boundary-condition coupling method and BOP fluid system model can expectedly be employed for the transient simulation and performance analysis of SMRs requiring daily load-following operations.

  • This paper describes the performance improvement of transient response and the modeling of small aircraft onboard generator. As the characteristics of the stator coil which are a major parameters of transient response were improved, the characteristics of transient response could be increased, therefore, the improved generator can be satisfied with large and fast load changes. Established the control model of the generator, it could be possible to do the analysis of generator performance, and improve the operational stability of the generator system using the control model.

  • The cool-down performance after soaking is very important in an automotive air-conditioning system and is considered as a key design variable. Therefore, transient characteristics of each system component are essential to the preliminary design as well as steady-state performance. The objective of this study is to develop a computer simulation model and ostinato theoretically the transient performance of an automotive air-conditioning system. To do that, the mathematical modelling of each component, such as compressor, condenser, receiver/drier, expansion valve, and evaporator, is presented first of all. The basic balance equations about mass and energy are used in modelling. For detailed calculation, condenser and evaporator are divided into many sub-sections. Each sub-section is an elemental volume for modelling. In models of expansion valve and compressor, dynamic behaviors are not considered in this analysis, but the quasisteady state ones are just considered, such as the relation between mass flow rate and pressure drop in expansion device, polytropic process in compressor, etc. Also it is assumed that there are no heat loss and no pressure drop in discharge, liquid, and suction lines. The developed simulation model is validated by comparing with the laboratory test data of an automotive air-conditioning system. The overall time-tracing properties of each component agreed well with those of test data in this case.

  • This paper presents an parallel type Linear Induction Motor with ununiform airgap for a shallow-depth underground train with 100‰ grade and 15 m curvature. This parallel type LIM has enough gradability but has inherently ununiform airgap between center and end parts. Consequently, performance when the train passes curved section should be considered with transient analysis. Moreover, general parallel operation, 1C2M which is usually used for train operation, deteriorates LIM performance because of different line velocity between inner and outer LIMs. Transient analysis has many problems such as huge model, lots of meshes, very long calculation time, truncation error and so on. This paper has presented a novel technique using equivalent linear rotating model in order to solve these problems and has analyzed parallel type LIM by using the proposed technique. Finally, LIM performance according to independent operating control has been investigated.

  • In this paper, a noncoherent code tracking loop is designed for 3GPP MODEM and its performance is analyzed in terms of steady-state jitter variance and transient response characteristics. An analytical closed-form formula for steady-state jitter variance is Int derived for AWGN environments as a general function of a pulse-shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth, together with the analysis on the transient response characteristic of a tracking loop. Based on the analysis, the code tracking loop with variable loop bandwidth that is efficient for full digital H/W implementation is designed and its performance is compared with that of the code tracking loop with fixed loop bandwidth, along with the verification by computer simulations.
