A two-dimensional (2D) steady state numerical model of concentration polarisation (CP) phenomena in a membrane channel has been developed using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package CFX (Ansys, Inc., USA). The model incorporates the transmembrane pressure (TMP), axially variable permeate flux, variable diffusivity and viscosity, and osmotic pressure effects. The model has been verified against several benchmark analytical and empirical solutions from the membrane literature. Additionally, the model is able to predict the rejection of an arbitrary solute by the membrane using a pore model, given some basic knowledge of the geometry of the solute molecule or particle, and the membrane pore geometry. This allows for predictive design of membrane systems without experimental determination of the membrane rejection for the specified operating conditions. A demonstration of the model is presented against experimental results for two uncharged test compounds (sucrose and PEG1000) from the literature. The model will be extended to incorporate charge effects, transient simulations, three-dimensional (3D) geometry and turbulent effects in future work.

Severe accidents in PWRs are characterized by a continuously changing geometry of the core due to chemical reactions, melting and mechanical failure of the rods and other structures. These local variations of the porosity and other parameters lead to multi-dimensionnal flows and heat transfers. In this paper, a comprehensive set of multi-dimensionnal models describing heat transfers, thermal-hydraulics and melt relocation in a reactor vessel is presented. Those models are suitable for the core description during a severe accident transient. A series of applications at the reactor scale shows the benefits of using such models.

The Microsource has to supply high quality Power that has high reliability and high energy efficiency to Load according to operating type of Microgrid. The energy sources of microsource type have various dynamic characteristic and transient response corresponding to classes and application skill. This paper shows dynamic characteristic of Microgrid according to Energy Source of microsource type. This research has been carried out by detailed modelling of Microturbine system and Fuelcell system. All models are realized by EMTP/RV and simulated change of operating type and load increase within Microgrid of DC constant voltage inverter model and Microturbine, Fuelcell based Microsource.
The usual procedure for the optimal design of ship's steering system is to minimize a chosen quadratic performance index, which isdetermined from the view point of economic run. However, the optimal control synthesized in such a straightforward fashion is unsatisfactory because ship's parameters differ from their nominal values due to uncertainties and errors in measurement and/or simplifications in mathematical modelling, and/or the variation of the ship's loading condition. In an attempt to resolve this difficulty, this paper presents a method for designing a low sensitive optimal steering system in a way as to minimize not only given performance index but also the sensitivity of the performance index and trajectory sensitivity. It is also shown that the optimal control so obtained will result in a system whose performance index and transient response are low sensitive to small varation in ship's time constant.
The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.
The Leaking Fuel Experiment test facility was designed to simulate the activity release from spent leaking fuel rods under steady state and transient conditions in the spent fuel pool. The experimental rig included an electrically heated fuel rod with different defects and a cooling system. The fission product transport was simulated by potassium-chloride. The conductivity changes of the water in the cooling system were measured to provide information about the amount of released solution. Defects of different sizes and positions were applied, together with a wide range of rod powers to simulate decay heat. The produced data can be used for predicting the activity release from leaking fuel under storage conditions and for the interpretation of fuel examination procedures.
Direct-contact heat transfer of a single saturated droplet upon colliding with a heated wall in the regime of film boiling was experimentally investigated using high-resolution infrared thermometry technique. This technique provides transient local wall heat flux distributions during the entire collision period. In addition, various physical parameters relevant to the mechanistic modelling of these phenomena can be measured. The obtained results show that when single droplets dynamically collide with a heated surface during film boiling above the Leidenfrost point temperature, typically determined by droplet collision dynamics without considering thermal interactions, small spots of high heat flux due to localized wetting during the collision appear as increasing Wen. A systematic comparison revealed that existing theoretical models do not consider these observed physical phenomena and have lacks in accurately predicting the amount of direct-contact heat transfer. The necessity of developing an improved model to account for the effects of local wetting during the direct-contact heat transfer process is emphasized.
The paper aims at improving the understanding and mitigating the effects of tunnel fires that may breakout due to the burning fuel and/or explosion within the tunnel. This study particularly focuses on the behavior of the commonly used horse shoe geometry of tunnel systems. The problem has been obtained using an adequate well-established program incorporating the Lagrangian approach. A transient-thermo-coupled static structural analysis is carried out. The effects of radiation and convection to the outer walls of the tunnel is studied. The paper also presents the impact of the hazard on the structural integrity of the tunnel. A methodology is proposed to study the tunnel fire using a model which uses equivalent steel sheet to represent the presence of reinforcements to improve the computational efficiency with adequate validation. A parametric study has been carried out and the effect of suitable lining property for mitigating the fire hazard is arrived at. Detailed analysis is done for the threshold limits of the properties of the lining material to check if it is acceptable in all aspects for the integrity of the tunnel. The study may prove useful for developing insights for ensuring tunnel fire safety. To conduct such studies experimentally are tremendously costly but are required to gain confidence. But, scaled models, as well as loading and testing conditions, cannot be studied by many trials experimentally as the cost will shoot up sharply. In this context, the results obtained from such computational studies with a feasible variation of various combinations of parameters may act as a set of guidelines to freeze the adequate combination of various parameters to conduct one or two costly experiments for confidence building.
Although the construction noise and vibration are transient and intermittent, their impact on the surrounding environment is huge. Since the construction equipment noise and vibration is usually transmitted because of the long distance, the sound insulation and the proper design of anti-vibration measures are very difficult. The regulation requires that the noise and vibration caused by the construction equipments should be measured within 30m from the source, whereas the blasting noise and vibration should be measured at least 60m and 160m away from the source, respectively. Instead of the 2D modelling mainly conducted so far, the 3D analysis of noise and vibration with the consideration of the height and size of the building, mountains and hills in the vicinity of the source is necessary.

In this paper, it is the result of analysis of the stability by power system analysis about the influence on the power system when the southwest - offshore wind power demonstration complex is constructed to 60MW and it is linked with the onshore power system. Considering the position of the wind turbine actually installed and the length of the cooperating line, we modeled the wind generators, offshore substation and the turbine step-up transformer. Changes of voltage when internal and external faults occurred is analyzed and the reactive power demand according to the amount of electricity generation is derived. And also phase angle stability and frequency is observed through a transient analysis. This paper clarify that there is no problem in the system when only offshore wind power is linked with the grid and try to present the reactive power amount necessary for maintaining the voltage of the point of cooperation appropriately.
