  • Thermal mass flow meters (TMFMs) are most widely used for measuring mass flow rates in the semiconductor industry. A TMFM should have a short response time in order to measure the time-varying flow rate rapidly and accurately. Therefore it is important to study transient heat transfer phenomena in the sensor tube of a TMFM that is the most critical part in the TMFM. In the present work, a simple numerical model for transient heat transfer phenomena of the sensor tube of a TMFM is presented. Numerical solutions for the tube and fluid temperatures in a transient state are obtained using the proposed model and compared with experimental results to validate the proposed model. Based on numerical solutions, heat transfer mechanism in a transient state in the sensor tube is explained. Finally, a correlation for predicting the response time of a sensor tube is presented. The correlation is verified by experimental results.

  • For lightning currents, a grounding system shows the transient grounding impedance characteristics. A grounding system for protection against lightning should be evaluated by the transient grounding impedance, not it's ground resistance. The transient grounding impedance varies with the shape of ground electrode and earth characteristics as well as the waveform of lightning surge current. For the analysis and practical use of transient grounding impedance, the characteristics of transient grounding impedance should be analyzed theoretically and this paper suggests the theoretical analysis for the transient grounding impedance of counterpoise by using the distributed parameter circuit model. EMTP and Matlab are used to simulate the distributed parameter circuit model of counterpoise and the adequacy of the distributed parameter model of counterpoise is examined by comparing the simulated results with the measured results.

  • A new model, the periodic transient storage zone model, is developed to describe solute transport mixing in natural streams and rivers with various bottom boundaries. To assess the effects of storage zones structure on transient storage exchange, we analyze data from salt and dye injection experiments in a recirculating laboratory flume with four spatially periodic pool-riffle sequences characteristic of natural river systems under low flow conditions. Dye injections show that solute transport mixing controlled by surface shapes of both the bed and the side in channels. As no existing transient storage model could represent these effects, we developed a new axially periodic transient storage zone model that better represent the effects of channel characteristics in natural river systems. The new model is also fitted to data from salt tracer injection experiments in four reaches of the upper Sabin River, Texas, USA. The proposed model is in good agreement with the field experimental data.

  • An integrated adhesive wear model was proposed to determine the transient wear and steady-state wear of aluminium alloy matrix composites. The transient wear volume was described by an exponential equation, while the steady-state wear was governed by a revised Archard equation, in which both the transient wear volume and transient sliding distance were excluded. A mathematical method was developed to determine both the transient distance and the net steady-state wear coefficient. Experimental wear tests were carried out on three types of commercial A6061 aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with 10%, 15% and 20% alumina particles. More accurate wear coefficient values were obtained with the proposed model. The average standard wear coefficient, as determined by the original Archard equation, was found to be about 51% higher.

  • This paper shows the verification work of SARAX code system in the reactor core transient calculation based on the simplified EBR-II Benchmark. The SARAX code system is an analysis package developed by Xi'an Jiaotong University and aims at the advanced reactor R&D. In this work, a neutron-photon coupled power calculation model and a spatial-dependent reactivity feedback model were introduced. To verify the models used in SARAX, the EBR-II SHRT-45R test was simplified to an ULOF transient with an input flowrate change curve by fitting from reference. With the neutron-photon coupled power calculation model, SARAX gave close results in both power fraction and peak power prediction to the reference results. The location of the hottest assembly from SARAX and reference are the same and the relative power deviation of the hottest assembly is 2.6%. As for transient analysis, compared with experimental results and other calculated results, SARAX presents coincident results both in trend and absolute value. The minimum value of core net reactivity during the transient agreed well with the reported results, which ranged from -0.3$ to -0.35$. The results verify the models in SARAX, which are correct and able to simulate the in-core transient with reliable accuracy.

  • To evaluate behavior in representing solute transport in natural streams, the storage zone model of the axially periodic transient storage zones is developed. The periodic transient storage zone model and continuous storage zone model are verified using the parameters and the tracer concentration vs. time curves observed in laboratory channels. The periodic storage zone model best fit the measured concentration vs. time curves, while the continuous storage model fails to describe some fluctuations and the plateau region of the tail occurring in a discontinuous transient storage system. Dispersion data from Shingobee River, Minnesota, U. S. A. show that the concentration curves simulated by the proposed model fit the observed concentration curves well.

  • This work studies the effects of transient reflectance on the thermal responses of a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort laser heating. The heating process is calculated using the conventional conduction model (parabolic one-step: POS), parabolic two-step model (PTS) with and without variable properties, hyperbolic two-step model (HTS). Results from the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS model with variable properties, however, results in totally different temperature profiles compared to those from POS models or calculation with constant properties. Transient reflectances are estimated from electron temperature distributions and based on the linear relationship between the electron temperature and complex dielectric constants. Reflectance of the front surface can be changed with respect to dielectric constants, while those of the rear surface remain unchanged.

  • A fluid transient analysis on the Koreasat 1 & 2 pipeline system is conducted through numerical parametric studies in which unsteady friction results are compared with quasi-steady friction results and show relatively accurate prediction of the response curve with the unsteady friction. The code developed and used in this analysis has finished verification through comparing with the original Zielke model, the full and recursive convolution model and quasi-steady model as a reference. The unsteady friction is calculated by the recursive convolution Zielke model in which a complete evolution history of velocity field is no longer required so that it makes the fluid transient analysis on the complicated system possible. The results show that the application of quasi-steady friction to model cannot predict the entire response curve properly except the first peak amplitude but the application of unsteady friction to model can predict reasonably the response curve, therefore it is to know the characteristics of the propulsion system.

  • A new CAD-compatible non-quasi-static (NQS) MOS transient model is presented. A new type of weighted residual method, the collcoatin method, is adopted to obtian an approximate ordinary differntial equation from the continuity eqation. Contrasting to the conventional NQS models, the new model can directly include the variatin of the depletion charge and the derived transient current sare expressed with only physically meaningful variables. The new model predicts transient behaviors reasonably well in the calculation including cutoff regions where the depletion charge rapidly changes.
