  • Turbomachinery such as turbines, pumps and compressors, which are installed in transportation systems such as warships, submarines and space vehicles, etc., often perform crucial missions and are exposed to potential dangerous impact environments such as base-transferred shock forces. To protect turbomachinery from excessive shock forces, it may be needed to accurately analyze transient responses of rotors, considering the dynamics of mount designs to be applied with. In this study a generalized FE transient response analysis model, introducing relative displacements, is firstly proposed to accurately predict transient responses of a flexible rotor-bearing system with mount systems to base-transferred shock forces. In the transient analyses the state-space Newmark method of a direct time integration scheme is utilized, which is based on the average velocity concept. Results show that for the identical mount systems considered, the proposed FE-based detailed flexible rotor model yields more reduced transient vibration responses to the same shocks than a conventional simple model or a Jeffcott rotor. Hence, in order to design a rotor-bearing system with a more compact light-weighted mount system, preparing against any potential excessive shock, the proposed FE transient response analysis model herein is recommended.

  • Numerical simulations of unsteady opposed-flow flames are performed using an adaptive time integration method designed for differential-algebraic systems. The compressibility effect is considered in deriving the system of equations, such that the numerical difficulties associated with a high-index system are alleviated. The numerical method is implemented for systems with detailed chemical mechanisms and transport properties by utilizing the Chemkin software. Two test simulations are performeds hydrogen/air diffusion flames with an oscillatory strain rate and transient ignition of methane against heated air. Both results show that the rapid transient behavior is successfully captured by the numerical method.

  • In this work, transient heat transfer analysis of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposite (CNTRC) cylinders with various essential and natural boundary conditions is investigated by a mesh-free method. The cylinders are subjected to thermal flux, convection environments and constant temperature faces. The material properties of the nanocomposite are estimated by an extended micro mechanical model in volume fraction form. The distribution of carbon nanotube (CNT) has a linear variation along the radial direction of axisymmetric cylinder. In the mesh-free analysis, moving least squares shape functions are used for approximation of temperature field in the weak form of heat transform equation and the transformation method is used for the imposition of essential boundary conditions. Newmark method is applied for solution time depended problem. The effects of CNT distribution pattern and volume fraction, cylinder thickness and boundary conditions are investigated on the transient temperature field of the nanocomposite cylinders.

  • Dynamic characteristics of the bell-type structure including acoustic effects and transient dynamic problems were analyzed numerically. Natural frequencies, mode shapes and transient dynamic analysis used the finite element method with 3-D general shell element. Mode shapes and stress distributions of transient dynamic analysis were expressed by computer graphics. The method using this study was evaluated by comparision of theoretical results at reference papers(14), (15) and the experimental test using Fast Fourier Transform analyzer. Vibrational modes governing acoustic characteristics of the typical bell-type structure depended on the first flexural mode(4-0 mode) and the second flexural mode(6-0 mode). Asymmetric effects by Dangiwas, acoustic holes gave rise to beat frequencies, and the Dangjwa was found to be most effective. When impact load acted on the bell, stress concentration occured at the rim part of bell. It was found that the bell type structure should be designed thickly at the rim part in order to prevent impact load from stress concentration.

  • A fluid transient analysis for the propellant flow in a monopropellant propulsion system is conducted using the method of characteristics (MOC). Algebraic simultaneous equations method and Clamor's rule method utilized to drive the compatible and characteristic equations are reviewed to understand MOC more extensively. The identification of fluid transient phenomena of propulsion system of Koreasat 1 is carried out through parametric studies. Also this work describes the reason that the propulsion system of Koreasat 1 has no orifice to control flow transients or to limit the initial hydrazine flow rate for the first-pulse firing.

  • Generally, it is necessary to perform transient structural analysis in order to verify and improve the seismic performance of high-rise buildings and bridges against earthquake loads. In this paper, we propose the model order reduction (MOR) method using the Krylov vectors to perform seismic analysis for linear and elastic systems in an efficient way. We then compared the proposed method with the mode superposition method (MSM) by using the limited numbers of modal vectors (or eigenvectors) calculated from the modal analysis. In the calculation, the data of the El Centro earthquake in 1940 were adopted for the seismic loading in the transient analysis. The numerical accuracy and efficiency of the two methods were compared in detail in the case of a simplified high-rise building.

  • $CF_4$ gas is one of the most useful gases in modern technologies for semiconductor fabrication. However, there are many problems which should be solved in order to fabricate semiconductor device, for example, etching speed drop due to ion charge-up and etching selectivity drop due to the high electron energy. One of useful method in order to suppress their damages above is pulsed-time modulated plasma (PM). However, transient responses of charged particles occur when the source power is turned-on and -off in PM method. To control plasma properties in detail, such a transient phenomenon must be investigated. In this paper, we investigate $CF_4$ RF plasma properties under a one-dimensional fluid model. And also for dynamic and stable control of $CF_4$ plasmas, we investigated the transient behavior of the plasmas after step up or down of the amplitude of the power source voltage $V_s$(t). Fundamental properties of transient $CF_4$ plasmas was discussed. Furthermore, we intend to discuss new method for pulsed-time plasma modulation.

  • To provide the appropriate direction for development of transient control in a gasoline engine, transient performance analysis and evalution under four accelerating types based on typical driver's acceleration type were implemented by experimental study. In order to evaluate the characteristics of transient performance quanititatively, the concept and method by transient response specifications were introduced. Several performance parameters in terms of engine speed(RPM), manifold absolute pressure(MAP), fuel injection duration($\DeltatI_{nj}$) and air excess ratio($\lambda$) were emasured simultaneously during the four types of the throttle valve opening with the step motor controlled by PC. The result showed that transient response specifications in terms of delay time, rising time and settling time characterized the transient performance for four acceleration types quantitatively. Intensified acceleration type was most economical and linear acceleration type revealed the best emission performance.

  • Transient signals in underwater show several characterisrics, that is, short duration, strong nonstationarity, various types of transient sources, which make it difficult to analyze and classify transient signals. In this paper, the feature vector extraction method for transient SOMAR signals is discussed by applying digital signal processing methods to the analysis of transient signals. A feature vector extraction methods using wavelet transform, which enable us to obtain better recognition rate than automatic classification using the classical method, are proposed. It is confirmed by simulation that the proposed method using wavelet transform performs better than the classical method even with smaller number of feature vectors. Especially, the feature vector extraction method using PR-QMF wavelet transform with the Daubechies coefficients is shown to perform well in noisy environment with easy implementation.
