  • Phase retrieval is concerned with the reconstruction of a signal from its Fourier transform magnitude (or intensity), which arises in many areas such as X-ray crystallography, optics, astronomy, or digital signal processing In such areas, the Fourier transform phase of the desired signal is lost while measuring Fourier transform magnitude (F.T.M.). However, if a reference 'signal is added to the desired signal, then, in the Fourier trans form magnitude of the added signal, the Fourier transform phase of the desired signal is encoded This paper addresses uniqueness and retrieval of the encoded Fourier phase of a multidimensional signal from the Fourier transform magnitude of the added signal along with Fourier transform magnitude of the desired signal and the information of the additive reference signal In Part I, several conditions under which the desired signal can be uniquely specified from the two Fourier transform magnitudes and the additive reference signal are presented In Part II, the development of non-iterative algorithms and an iterative algorithm that may be used to reconstruct the desired signal (s) is considered

  • This paper proposes the use of wavelet packet transform in a transform based video coding scheme, which is mainly used in low/very low bit-rate video coding schemes i.e. H.263 standard. In the experiments, the discrete cosine transform in the video coding scheme is replaced by the wavelet packet transform, and the improved performance in term of peak signal to noise ratio is measured and compared with the results obtained from the coding scheme implementing the ordinary wavelet transform. The experimental results show an impressive improvement obtained from the use of wavelet packet transform.

  • The quality of radiation for a high energy x-ray beam can be specified by its attenuation curve in a selected material. The inverse Laplace transform of the attenuation curve can be used as an approximate indication of the energy spectrum of the beam. We have made a comparative investigation of the estimated spectrum obtained by the Laplace transform analysis of the transmitted exposure data measured in an absorption study of a 6MV x-ray beam. Two of existing transform pair models have been investicated and discussed.

  • In the HEVC standard, transform coefficient coding that affects the output bitstream directly is a core part of the encoder and it includes coefficient scanning and entropy coding. Recently, JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) advances to HEVC Committee Draft (CD). In this paper, we explain HEVC transform coefficient coding and propose an efficient transform coefficient coding method considering statistics of transform coefficients in the intra frame coder. The proposed method reduces BD-Rate by up to 0.74%, compared to the conventional HEVC transform coefficient coding.

  • The Hotelling transform is based on statistical properties of an image. The principal uses of this transform are in data compression. The basic concept of the Hotelling transform is that the choice of basis vectors pointing the direction of maximum variance of the data. This property can be used for rotation normalization. Many objects of interest in pattern recognition applications can be easily standardized by performing a rotation normalization that aligns the coordinate axes with the axes of maximum variance of the pixels in the object. However, this transform can not be used to rotation normalization of color images directly. In this paper, we propose a new method for rotation normalization of color images based on the Hotelling transform. The Hotelling transform is performed to calculate basis vectors of each channel. Then the summation of vectors of all channels are processed. Rotation normalization is performed using the result of summation of vectors. Experimental results showed the proposed method can be used for rotation normalization of color images effectively.

  • This paper examined dynamic characteristics of high speed trains using a time varying frequency transform. Fourier transform based methods are frequently used for the calculation of the dynamic characteristics of trains in the frequency domain, but they cannot represent the time-varying characteristics. Therefore it is necessary to examine their characteristics using a time-varying frequency transform. For the examination, the non-stationary vibration of wheelset, bogie, and carbody are measured using accelerometers and stored in a data aquisition system. They are processed with localization of the data by modulating with a window function, and Fourier transform is taken to each localized data, called the short-time Fourier transform. From the processed results, time varying auto-spectral density, cross-spectral density, frequency response, and coherence functions have been calculated. From the analysis, it is confirmed that the time varying frequency transform is a useful method for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of high speed trains.

  • This paper deals with speech enhancement methods using the wavelet transform. A cycle-spinning scheme and undecimated wavelet transform are used for denoising of speech signals, and then their results are compared with that of the conventional wavelet transform. We apply soft-thresholding technique for removing additive background noise from noisy speech. The symlets 8-tap wavelet and pyramid algorithm are used for the wavelet transform. Performance assessments based on average SNR, cepstral distance and informal subjective listening test are carried out. Experimental results demonstrate that both cycle-spinning denoising(CSD) method and undecimated wavelet denoising(CWD) method outperform conventional wavelet denoising(UWD) method in objective performance measure as welt as subjective listening test. The two methods also show less "clicks" that usually appears in the neighborhood of signal discontinuities.

  • In the communications systems with diversity, we are commonly faced on needing of new source coding technique, error resilient coding. The error resilient coding addresses the coding algorithm that has the robustness to unreliability of communications channel. In recent years, many error resilient coding techniques were proposed such as data partitioning, resynchronization, error detection, concealment, reference picture selection and multiple description coding (MDC). In this paper, we proposed an MDC using whitening transform. The conventional MDC using correlating transform is need additional information to decode the image. But, if an image is transformed using the whitening transform, the additional information is not necessary to transform because the coefficients of whitening transform have uni-variance statistics.

  • The Mellin Transform is a well-known method to find out transformations between two overlapping images. This paper models a scene with an object moving with different velocities. Also, it analyzes the relationship of the detected correlation peak to the spectrum of the background and an object. Lastly, we investigate the optimal solution of the image registration parameters minimizing the effect of the noise from the Mellin Transform by applying the Wiener filter concept.
