  • Effects of liquid subcooling on pool boiling heat transfer in an annulus with an open bottom have been investigated experimentally. A tube of 19.1mm diameter and the water at atmospheric pressure have been used for the fest. Up to $50^{\circ}C$ of liquid subcooling has been tested and experimental data of the annulus have been compared with the data of a single unrestricted tube. Temperatures on the heated tube surface fluctuate only slightly regardless of the heat flux in the annulus, whereas high variation is observed on the surface of the single tube. An increase in the degree of subcooling decreases heat transfer coefficients greatly both for the single tube and the annulus. Heat transfer coefficients increase suddenly at ${\Delta}T_{sub}\;{\le}\;10^{\circ}C$ and much greater change in heat transfer coefficients is observed at the annulus. To obtain effects of subcooling on heat transfer quantitatively, two new empirical equations have been suggested, and the correlations predict the empirical data within ${\pm}30\%$ error bound excluding some data at lower heat transfer coefficients.

  • Heat transfer enhancement of three types of brazed plate heat exchangers has been evaluated experimentally. The effects of flow resonance in a plate heat exchanger on the heat transfer rate and pressure drop have been investigated in a wide range of mass flow rates in detail. The problem is of particular interest in the innovative design of a plate heat exchanger by flow resonance. The results obtained indicate that both heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are increased as mass flow rate is increased, as expected. It is also found that the heat transfer enhancement is increased with an increase in the plate pitch, while the heat transfer is decreased with a decrease in the chevron angle. Pressure drop also increased with an increase in the plate pitch and with a decrease in the chevron angle. Heat transfer enhancement in the plate heat exchangers is maximized by flow resonance and the resonance frequency of the present plate heat exchangers is found to be in the range of $10~15\;Hz$.

  • The issue of connection between entities has a lengthy history in educational research, especially since it provides the necessary bridge between base and target in analogical transfer. Recently, the connection has been viewed through the application of technology to bridge between sequences in order to be cognitively useful. This study reports the effect of sequence type (AT vs. TA) and connection type (fading vs. popping) on the achievement and analogical transfer in a multimedia application. In the current research, 10th -grade and 11th -grade biology students in Korea were randomly assigned to five groups to test the effects of presentation sequence and entity connection type on analogical transfer. Consistent with previous studies, sequence type has a significant effect: analogical transfer performance was better when base representations were presented first followed by target representations rather than the reverse order. This is probably because presenting a familiar base first helps in understanding a less familiar target. However, no fully significant differences were found with the entity connection types (fading vs. popping) in analogical transfer. According to the Markman and Gentner's (2005) spatial model, analogy in a space is influenced only by the differences between concepts, not by distance in space. Thus connection types fail on the basis of this spatial model in analogical transfer test. The findings and their implications for sequence and connection research and practice are discussed. Leveraging on the analogical learning process, specific implications for scaffolding learning processes and the development of adaptive expertise are drawn.

  • This study was performed to investigate the result that in-vivo or in-vitro embryos of Hanwoo cows were transferred to Holstein cows. Seventeen Hanwoo cows were used as donors for production of in-vivo embryos and fresh hanwoo in-vivo embryos were transferred to 1,150 Holsteins. And 2 embryos were transferred to 188 Holstein recipients to produce twin calves. Diagnosis on pregnancy was performed by rectal palpation at $60\sim90$ days after transfer. The pregnancy rate of Holstein recipients was 55.8% after transfer with Hanwoo in-vivo embryos and 38.2% after transfer with Hanwoo in-vitro embryos. The delivery rate of pregnant Holstein recipients was 88.4% after transfer with Hanwoo in-vivo embryos and 75.6% after transfer with Hanwoo in-vitro embryos. The rate of delivery of Holstein recipients transferred with two Hanwoo embryos was 36.2% and the rate of twin production was 25.9%. The rate of twin production by embryo transfer with in-vivo embryos was 30.4%, whereas the fate with in-vitro embryos was 15.6%. The pregnancy rate according to the grade of corpus luteum of Holstein recipients transferred with Hanwoo in-vitro embryos was 41.5 and 36.0% for A and B grade, respectively. The pregnancy rate according to the transfer in site in the uterine lumen of recipients was 40.9 and 32.7% for anterior and middle site, respectively. The pregnancy rate according to day of embryo transfer after estrus of recipients was 45.5, 38.8 and 39.7% for day 6, day 7 and day 8, respectively. There was difference of pregnancy rate according embryo transfer technician ($30.5\sim45.8%$) individual dairy farm ($21.1\sim51.0%$). These results are supposed to indicate that the rate of pregnancy after transfer with Hanwoo embryos to Holstein recipients was similar to that within the same breed, and consequently that this method would be beneficial to enhance the productivity in Hanwoo reproduction.

  • The heat transfer enhancement by pulsating flow in a plate heat exchanger has been experimentally investigated in this study. The effect of the pulsating flow, such as pulsating frequency and flow rate on the heat transfer as well as pressure drop in a plate heat exchanger has been studied in detail. Reynolds number in cold side of a plate heat exchanger is varied 100∼530 while that of hot side is fixed at 620. The pulsating frequency is considered in the range of 5∼30 Hz. The results of the pulsating flow are also compared with those of steady flow. It is found that the average heat transfer rate as well as pressure drop is increased as flow rate is increased for both steady flow and pulsating flow cases. When pulsating flow is applied to the plate heat exchanger, heat transfer could be substantially increased in particular ranges of pulsating frequency or Strouhal number; St=0.36∼0.60 and pressure drop is also increased, compared with those of steady flow. However, in the region of low pulsating frequency or high pulsating frequency, heat transfer enhancement is in meager. Heat transfer enhancement map is suggested based on Strouhal number and Reynolds number of pulsating flow.

  • With increasing transmission speed of backbone networks, it is getting to provide enough available bandwidth. However, the bandwidth is not effectively utilized in volumetric data transfer. This mainly comes from the transmission protocol, TCP, which is used for most applications. TCP is inherently difficult to adapt the available bandwidth because of it's own characteristic of transfer mechanism. UDT is a prominent application level data transfer protocol which is targeting high speed network. In this paper, we propose UDT parallel transfer technologies which is adaptive to network status and then evaluate their performance in two points of view. Firstly, we measure data transfer rate of UDT with rate congestion control methods, and compare them with basic UDT. Secondly, we apply parallel transfer technologies adapted to network status, and measure their performance. Experimental results showed that UDT rate congestion control method outperforms UDT with 106% improvement in RTT 100ms section set with jitter 30ms. In addition, performance of parallel transfer with rate congestion control method showed 107% improvement than that of parallel transfer in RTT 400ms section set with jitter 20ms.

  • A finite volume radiation solution method was applied to a non- orthogonal coordinate system for the analysis of radiative-convective heat transfer about a circular cylinder in crossflow. The crossflow Reynolds number based on the cylinder radius was 20, and the fluid Prandtl number was 0.7. The radiative heat transfer coupled with convection was reasonably predicted by the finite volume radiation solution method. The investigation includes the effects of conduction- to-radiation parameter, optical thickness, scattering albedo and cylinder wall-emissivity on heat transfer about the cylinder. As the conduction- to-radiation parameter decreases, the radiative heat transfer rate increases and conduction rate as well due to the increase in temperature gradient on the cylinder wall which is caused by radiation enhancement. With an increase in the optical thickness, the Nusselt number increases significantly and the temperature gradient shows similar behavior. Though the radiative heat transfer increases with the scattering albedo, the total heat transfer decreases. This is because the decrease in the conduction heat transfer exceeds the increase in the radiation heat transfer. As the wall- emissivity increases, the radiation absorbed in the vicinity of the cylinder wall increases and thereby the total heat transfer increases, even though the conduction heat transfer decreases.

  • Artificial neural network is widely used for its excellent performance and implementability. However, traditional neural network needs to learn the system from scratch, with the addition of new input data, the variation of the observation environment, or the change in the form of input/output data. To resolve such a problem, the technique of transfer learning has been proposed. Transfer learning constructs a newly developed target system partially updating existing system and hence provides much more efficient learning process. Until now, transfer learning is mainly studied in the field of image processing and is not yet widely employed in acoustic data processing. In this paper, focusing on the scalability of transfer learning, we apply the concept of transfer learning to the problem of guitar chord classification and evaluate its performance. For this purpose, we build a target system of convolutional neutral network (CNN) based 48 guitar chords classification system by applying the concept of transfer learning to a source system of CNN based 24 guitar chords classification system. We show that the system with transfer learning has performance similar to that of conventional system, but it requires only half the learning time.

  • Recently, computer modelling is increasingly used as a design tool, which requires more detailed data for heat transfer coefficients in various regions of the induction motor. But there are little information about those of rotor fan and endring because of difficulty in measuring signals in rotating bodies. In the present studies, the temperature signals were precisely measured with self-developed telemetry system, which had multi-channels and high rotational speed. After some losses were compensated, the heat transfer coefficients of the rotor endring and fan surfaces were measured. Minimum heat transfer region was existed with endcap plate distance and maximum heat transfer was found at some rotor fan width. It was also studied that how the guide plate and endcap inside rib effected on the rotor heat transfer. The higher heat transfer were obtained with decreasing guide plate distance, increasing the number and height of endcap inside rib. The correlation equations of the results were obtained and compared with others. Above results of the heat transfer coefficients can be used as basic data for cooling design of the various kind of motors.

  • To increase the ink transfer rate in the micro-gravure-offset printing, the liquid transfer process between two separating plates is investigated. During the liquid transfer process, in which one plate is fixed and the other one moves vertically, a sessile droplet is separated into two droplets. The volume ratio of the two droplets depends on the contact angles of the two plates. In a numerical study of the ink transfer processes, liquid transfer between two parallel separating plates and between a trapezoidal cavity and an upward moving plate are simulated, as models of the printing of ink from the offset pad onto the substrate and the picking up of ink from the gravure plate by the offset pad, respectively. Also, in experimental study, to obtain various surface contact angles, chemical treatment, plasma treatment, and electrowetting- on-dielectric (EWOD) surface are considered. The transfer rate between two plates is calculated by analyzing the droplet images. From the results, the optimal surface contact angles of the units of the micro-gravure-offset printing can be characterized.
