  • Background: Apart from reducing occupational exposure to cytotoxic hazards, the PhaSeal(R) closed-system transfer device (CSTD) can extend the beyond-use dates (BUDs) of unfinished vials of antineoplastic drugs for up to 168 hours (seven days). In this study, the total material cost incurred by its use in a Malaysian government-funded hospital was calculated. Methods: A list of vial stability following initial needle punctures of 29 commonly-used antineoplastic drugs was compiled. The amount of the materials used, including drugs, infusion bottles, the PhaSeal(R) CSTD and other consumables, was recorded on a daily basis for three months in 2015. The total cost was calculated based on the actual acquisition costs, and was compared with that of a hypothetical scenario, whereby conventional syringe-needle sets were used for the same amounts of preparations. Results: The use of the PhaSeal(R) CSTD incurred a cost of MYR 383,634.52 (USD 92,072.28) in three months, representing an average of MYR 170.5 (USD 40.92) per preparation or an estimated annual cost of MYR 1,534,538.08 (USD 368,289.14). Compared with conventional syringe-needle approach, it is estimated to lead to an additional spending of MYR 148,627.68 (USD 35,670.64) yearly. Conclusion: Although there was a reduction of drug wastage achieved by extending BUDs of unfinished vials using the PhaSeal(R) CSTD, cost saving was not observed, likely attributable to the wide use of lower-priced generic drugs in Malaysia. Future studies should further evaluate the possibility of cost saving, especially in health settings where branded and high-cost antineoplastic drugs are more commonly used.

  • In this paper, we present an implementation of high speed image data transfer using XDMA for a video signal generation / acquisition device developed as a military test equipment. The technology proposed in this study obtains efficiency by replacing the method of copying data using the system buffer in the kernel area with the transmission and reception through the DMA engine in the FPGA. For this study, the device was developed as a PXIe platform in consideration of life cycle, and performance was maximized by using a low-cost FPGA considering mass productivity. The video I/O board implemented in this paper was tested by changing the AXI interface clock frequency and link speed through the existing memory copy method. In addition, the board was constructed using the DMA engine of the FPGA, and as a result, it was confirmed that the transfer speed was increased from 5~8Hz to 140Hz. The proposed method will contribute to strengthening defense capability by reducing the cost of device development using the PXIe platform and increasing the technology level.

  • In this paper, a GPU-accelerated kernel of range Doppler algorithm (RDA) was developed for real-time image formation based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). A pinned memory was used to minimize the data transfer time between the host and the GPU device, and the kernel was configured to perform all RDA operations on the GPU to minimize the number of data transfers. The dataset was obtained through the FMCW drone SAR experiment, and the GPU acceleration effect was measured in an intel i7-9700K CPU, 32GB RAM, and Nvidia RTX 3090 GPU environment. Including the data transfer time between host and devices, it was measured to be accelerated up to 3.41 times compared to the CPU, and when only the acceleration effect of operation was measured without including the data transfer time, it was confirmed that it could be accelerated up to 156 times.

  • Facebow transfer is essential for accurately mounting a dental cast onto a semi-adjustable articulator. The precision of traditional analog facebow transfer is influenced by both the accuracy of the equipment used and the skill level of the operator. Considering that substantial positional deviations can adversely affect the quality of a fabricated dental prosthesis; it is critical to assess the positional accuracy of casts mounted using analog facebow transfer. This case report evaluates the linear and angular deviations of the occlusal plane for maxillary casts mounted through both analog facebow transfer and cone-beam computed tomography-based methods. The findings indicate that analog facebow transfer produced a linear deviation ranging from 3 to 16 mm and an angular deviation of the occlusal plane between 5 to 7 degrees. This case report confirms that, across two patients, analog facebow transfer can result in varying degrees of positional deviation, thereby potentially leading to inaccuracies in the fabrication of dental prostheses. These results suggest that, in clinical practice, the use of analog facebow transfer may yield significant deviations during the process of mounting maxillary casts.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the characteristics of the ion wind generated by the electric field between a needle electrode and the parallel plate electrodes. The ion wind enhances heat and mass transfer between the surface and the surrounding gas. Moreover such enhancement makes no noise or vibration. This study is conducted to develop the electronic cooling device. The measured gas velocities and heat transfer coefficients are proportional to the applied voltage. The heat transfer coefficient can be increased as compared with a natural convection. The maximum enhancement of heat transfer obtained in this system is $47\%$ for 3 W in heat transfer rate.

  • An experimental and numerical study on the three-dimensional natural convection-radiation conjugate heat transfer in the enclosure with heat generating chip has been performed. A 3-dimensional simulation model is developed by considering heat transfer phenomena by conduction-convection and radiation. Radiative transfer was analyzed with the discrete ordinates method. Experiments are conducted in order to validate the numerical model. Comparisons with the experimental data show that good agreement is obtained when the radiation effect is considered. The effects of the thermal conductivity of the substrate and power level on heat transfer are investigated. It is shown that radiation is the dominant heat transfer mode and the conductivity of the substrate has important effects on the heat transfer in the enclosure.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the development of mechanical projectile transfer system to prevent musculoskeletal problems in the firing test range. Prior to 2010, the projectile has been transferred from the worktable to the loading device of 155mm K9 fixed-type artillery by manual. Because the amount of firing test has been increased drastically since 2010, two types of mechanical projectile transfer system were developed to prevent musculoskeletal problems. The NIOSH lift equation and the working posture assessment system such as OWAS, RULA and REBA were used to evaluate the appropriacy of working weight and posture by manual transfer of projectile. The configuration and operation procedure of projectile transfer systems which were developed to improve work efficacy and to reduce the burden of manual transferring were described. The improvements were assessed by the number of processes, the tact time and the working posture assessment for operation of this system by comparing to the manual transfer of projectile.

  • In this paper we propose a protection mechanism for the debug port. While debug ports are useful tools for embedded device development and maintenance, they can also become potential attack tools for device hacking in case their usage is permitted to hackers with malicious intentions. The proposed approach prevents illicit use of debug ports by controlling access through user authentication, where the device generates and issues authentication token only to the server-authenticated users. An authentication token includes user access information which represents the user's permitted level of access and the maximum number of authentications allowed using the token. The device authenticates the user with the token and grants limited access based on the user's access level. The proposed approach improves the degree of overall security by removing the need to expose the device's secret key. Availability is also enhanced by not requiring server connection after the initial token generation and further by supporting flexible token transfer among predefined device groups. Low implementation cost is another benefit of the proposed approach, enabling it to be adopted to a wide range of environments in demand of debug port protection.

  • This paper describes a modified Roebuck compression device as a potential compression device of a rotating cryogenic refrigeration system in superconducting machine such as generator or motor. The conventional cryogen transfer method from stationary refrigeration system to rotating system can be eliminated by an on-board cryogenic refrigeration system that utilizes well-designed multi-stage modified Roebuck compression device. This paper shows basic thermodynamic analysis of modified Roebuck compression device and its application for compressing neon at 77 K with substantial pressure ratio when the rotor diameter is 0.8 m with rotating speed of 3600 rpm. The device does not require any moving part in rotating frame, but two separate thermal reservoirs to convert thermal energy into mechanical compression work. The high temperature thermal reservoir is atmospheric environment at 300 K and the low temperature thermal reservoir is assumed as a liquid nitrogen bath at 77 K. The concept of the compression device in this paper demonstrates its usefulness of generating high-pressure neon at 77 K for rotating J-T neon refrigeration cycle of superconducting rotor.
