Reverse osmosis(R/O), ultrafiltration(UF) and microfiltration (MF) processes are widely used for water treatment. In the seminar, characteristics of typical membrane modules including tubular, hollow fiber, plate and frame and spiral wound types will be discussed in detail. The design methods based on hydrodynamics for hollow fiber and spiral wound modules will be introduced analytically. Concentration polarization (CP) and membrane fouling mechnism as well as the techniques for CP reduction will be handled. The CP control techniques contain chemically modified membrane surface, pretreatment of feed water, operation of low trans-membrane pressure, chemical or physical cleaning methods and artificial production of various fluid turbulences near the membrane surface, etc. In especially, the recent commercial membrane modules for CP control including module rotation, vibration and Taylor or Dean vortex system will be introduced and discussed in detail.
A novel system to thicken the concentrated colloidal solution from membrane water treat-ment processes was developed. A hollow-fiber microfilter(hydrophilic polyethylene nominal pore size 0.1 ${\mu}$m total surface area 0.42 m2) was installed in an acrylic housing that has an aeration port 5 cm below the membrane and a clarifier in the bottom. The concentrate was uniformly supplied from the top of the housing. Bacuum filtration caused downward flow of concentrate and as a result thickening interface. The addition of poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) resulted in rapid increase of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) and in no improvement of the filtered water turbidity and thickening process. Two types of con-centrate and concentrate turbidity had little effect on the increase of TMP and concentrate thickening. It was observed that for the same height of membrane housing membrane surface area to housing volume (A/V) ratio had significant effect on the increase of TMP. When the housing volume was increased ten times the increasing rate of TMP was three times faster as compared to the original housing. A hydraulic model successfully simulated the formation and sedimentation of thickening interface.

The ultrafiltration behavior of dilute colloidal solution containing Si particles has been investigated. The experiments in cross flow mode have been performed at different operating condition by using the membrane with 20 kDa cut-off. The flux decline was due to the development of membrane fouling which was a dynamic process of two distinctive stages. For the high trans-membrane pressure, the pore blocking resistance was dominant at the initial period of filtraion and was followed by the cake resistance. And for the low cross flow velocity, the membrane fouling was governed by the cake filtration model at the initial stage of filtration process. Flux jump was observed temporally during the membrane filtration of mixed feed solution.
The permeation characteristics of the wastewater containing Si fine particles were examined by ultrafiltration using the polyolefin tubular membrane module. Flux with time was due to the growth of Si cake deposited on the membrane surface and the pore plugging by fine particles. The rate of flux decline in the initial stage increased with the trans-membrane pressure. The pore blocking resistance was the dominant resistance at the initial period of filtration and the cake resistance began to dominate with the initial pore blocking resistance. The larger pores compared with the fine particles, the more the membrane pores could be blocked by the fine particles. Before and after treatment, the distribution of particle size was shifted toward to the left. Then, the average size of fine particles in the permeate was 20 nm.

The effect of ZnO on cellulose acetate in the removal of benzophenone-3 (BP-3) was investigated. The benzophenone-3 (BP-3) which is an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) was completely removed (100%) from the drinking water using Cellulose Acetate (CA) and zinc oxide (ZnO) composite membranes. The membranes were prepared by DIPS method and the filtration experiments were conducted by dead end filtration unit. The macrostructure of the membrane were studied by ATR-IR and XRD Spectra's. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the micro properties of the membranes. The laboratory experiments such as water uptake study and pure water flux performed to confirm the increasing hydrophilicity. The enhancing hydrophilicity was confirmed with respect to higher the concentration of nanoparticles. Evaluation of BP-3 removal was carried in different experimental conditions, such as, different Trans membrane pressure and different concentration of feed. The membrane with low pressure showed better performance by rejecting 100% of BP-3. However, 1 ppm, 3 ppm and 6 ppm of feed solution was used and among them 3 ppm of feed solution gives 100% rejection. The ZnO nanoparticales enhances the performance of CA membrane by showing maximum rejection.
A process diagnosis method for membrane water treatment plant was developed using a constant flux membrane fouling model. This diagnosis method can be applied to a real-field membrane-based water treatment plant as an early alarming system for membrane fouling. The constant flux membrane fouling model was based on the simplest equation form to describe change in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) during the filtration cycle from a literature. The model was verified using a pilot-scale microfiltraton (MF) plant with two commercial MF membrane modules (72 m2 of membrane area). The predicted TMP data were produced using the model, where the modeling parameters were obtained by the least square method using the early plant data and modeling equations. The diagnosis was carried out by comparing the predicted TMP data (as baseline) and real plant data. As a result of the case study, the diagnsis method worked pretty well to predict the early points where fouling started to occur.
The application of the membrane filtration process has been increased for the drinking water treatment system because of excellent quality of treated water compared with the sand filtration process. The selection of suitable pre-treatment processes and optimum flux according to the characteristics of raw water are important factors for the design of membrane processes. In this study, the most efficient pre-treatment processes for drinking water was selected by investigating the effects of pre-treatment processes on the operational stability of the membrane filtration process. Both lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments were conducted. In the lab-scale test, the effect of pre-treatment processes on the stability of the membrane filtration process was investigated indirectly by comparing the performance of membrane flux for raw water, pre-treated water, and membrane permeated water. In the pilot-scale test, the usefulness of prefiltration processes was assessed by comparing the performance of single membrane process and hybrid coagulation-membrane process. The results indicated that the coagulation process contributed to the stabilization of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) by removing contaminants on membranes, though the pre-filtration process had little effect on the TMP.

We treated lake water by ceramic ultrafiltration membranes and found the optimal backflushing period and trans-membrane pressure (TMP) of periodic water-backflushing system. The optimal filtration time interval at fixed BT = 3 sec was 30 for A002 membrane in all viewpoints of $J/J_0,\;R_f$, and $V_T$, and we could acquire the highest $V_T$ value in the membranes used here. However, the highest $V_T$ was acquired at FT = 60 sec for M9, and at FT = 90 sec for C005 membrane. Then the lower TMP reduced the membrane fouling during filtration of lake water, and could maintain the higher permeate flux compared with the initial flux. However, the largest value $V_T$ could be obtained at the highest TMP condition for M9 membrane at fixed FT = 60 sec and BT = 3 sec. The quality of treated water in our UF ceramic system was Turbidity = $0.20{\sim}4.88NTU$, $COD_{Mn} = 0.00{\sim}2.58 mg/L$, $TDS = l8{\sim}71 mg/L$, and $NH_3-N = 0.004{\sim}1.689 mg/L$.
Seawater desalination process using a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane has been considered as one of the most promising technologies in solving the water scarcity problems in many arid regions around the world. To protect RO membrane in the process, a thorough understanding of the pretreatment process is particularly needed. Seawater organic matters (SWOMs) may form a gel layer on the membrane surface, which will increase a concentration polarization. As the SWOMs can be utilized as a substrate, membrane biofouling will be progressed on the RO membrane surface, resulting in the flux decline and increase of trans-membrane pressure drop and salt passage. In the middle of disinfection, an optimal chlorine dosage and neutralizer (sodium bisulfite, SBS) should be practiced to prevent oxidizing the surface of RO membranes. Additional fundamental research including novel non-susceptible biofouling membranes would be necessary to provide a guide line for the proper pretreatment process.
