A program that predicts trajectories of projectiles influenced by the interference flow field of helicopters is developed. The interference flow field are computed using a compressible inviscid solver in conjunction with an actuator disc model. The trajectories are predicted using 6-DOF (Degree of Freedom) equations as well as an alternative form of modified point mass equations of motion. The method for the interference flow field prediction method are validated with ROBIN(ROtor Body INteraction) model. A Sierra international bullet and a 105mm projectile are used to validate the trajectory method. Trajectories of a Sierra International bullet and a HYDRA 70 rocket firing from a helicopter are predicted.
The accurate prediction of the flow and the pressure distribution near the tip of the blade is crucial in determining the tip vortex cavitation inception which usually occurs on the blade tip or inside the core of the tip vortex just downstream of the blade tip. An improved boundary element method is applied to the prediction of the flow around propeller blades, with emphasis at the tip region. In the method, the Blow adapted grid and a higher order panel method, which combines a hyperboloidal panel geometry with a hi-quadratic dipole distribution, are used in order to accurately model the trailing wake geometry and the highly rolled-up regions in the wake. The method is applied to several propeller geometries and the results have been found to agree well to the existing experimental data. Inviscid flow methods are able to predict the pressures at the tip as well as the shape of the trailing wake. On the other hand, they are unable to determine the flow inside the viscous core of the tip vortex, where cavitation inception often occurs. Thus, a method is presented that treats the flow inside the viscous core. The inner flow is treated with a 2-D Clavier-stokes solution without making any assumptions for axisymmetric flow and conicity of the flow along the tip trajectory. The method can thus allow the treatment of general propeller blade configurations. The velocity and pressure distributions inside the core are shown and compared to those from other numerical methods.
This paper predicts the rotordynamic force coefficients of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) with ball-socket pivot and compares the predictions to the published test data obtained under load-between-pad (LBP) configuration. The present TPJB model considers the pivot stiffness calculated based on the Hertzian contact stress theory. Due to the compliance of the pivot, the predicted journal eccentricity agree well with the measured journal center trajectory for increasing static loads, while the early prediction without pivot model consideration underestimates it largely. The predicted pressure profile shows the significant pressure development even on the unloaded pads along the direction opposite to the loading direction. The predicted stiffness coefficients increase as the static load and the rotor speed increase. They agree excellently with test data from open literature. The predicted damping coefficients increase as the static load increases and the rotor speed decreases. The prediction underestimates the test data slightly. In general, the current predictive model including the pivot stiffness improves the accuracy of the rotordynamic performance predictions when compared to the previously published predictions.

The airborne backbone network(ABN) provides communication transport services between airborne nodes, surface nodes and satellite nodes. Such ABN is generally constructed with wide-body and high-capacity planes such as AWACS, which can fly long-term along pre-defined flight paths. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to improve routing performances by reconfiguring routing path before link failure based on the prediction of link state with the information of pre-defined backbone nodes' trajectories. Since the proposed method does not need additional information exchange between airborne nodes in order to acknowledge the link failure, it can be effectively used for airborne backbone network with limited bandwidths.
The present study investigates numerically particle laden flow through compressor cascades and a rocket nozzle. Engines are affected by various particles which are suspending in the atmosphere. Especially in the case of aircraft aviating in volcanic, industrial and desert region including many particles, each components of engine system are damaged severely. That damage modes are erosion of compressor blading and rotor path components, partial or total blockage of cooling passage and engine control system degradation. Numerical prediction and experimental data, erosion rates are predicted for two materials - ceramic, soft metal - on compressor blade surface. Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) Particles included in solid rocket propelant make ablative the rocket motor nozzle and imped the expansion processes of propulsion. By the definition of particle deposition efficiency, characteristics of particles impaction are considered quantitatively Stoke number is defined over the various particle sizes and particle trajectories are treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability is considered by definition of Weber number in rocket nozzle and particle breakup and evaporation is simulated in a rocket nozzle.

This case study presented a simplified failure mechanism approach used as a preliminary deformation prediction for the Mexico City's metro system expansion. Because of the Mexico City's difficult subsoils, Line 12 project was considered one of the most challenging projects in Mexico. Mexico City's subsurface conditions can be described as a multilayered stratigraphy changing from soft high plastic clays to dense to very dense cemented sands. The Line 12 trajectory crossed all three main geotechnical Zones in Mexico City. Starting from to west of the City, Line 12 was projected to pass through very dense cemented sands corresponding to the Foothills zone changing to the Transition zone and finalizing in the Lake zone. Due to the change in the subsurface conditions, different constructions methods were implemented including the use of TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method), and cut-and-cover using braced Diaphragm walls for the underground section of the project. Preliminary crown and excavation front deformations were determined using a simplified failure mechanism prior to performing finite element modeling and analysis. Results showed corresponding deformations for the crown and the excavation front to be 3.5cm (1.4in) and 6cm (2.4in), respectively. Considering the complexity of Mexico City's difficult subsoil formation, construction method selection becomes a challenge to overcome. The use of a preliminary results in order to have a notion of possible deformations prior to advanced modeling and analysis could be beneficial and helpful to select possible construction procedures.

This paper proposes an improved implementation algorithm for the continuous-time receding horizon control (RHC). The proposed algorithm has a feature that it has better control performance than the existing algorithm. Main idea of the proposed algorithm is that we can approximate the original RHC problem better by assuming the predicted input trajectory on the prediction horizon has a continuous form, which is constructed from linear interpolation of finite number of vectors. This, in turn, leads to improved control performance. We derive a predictor such that it takes linear interpolation into account and proposes the method by which we can express the cost exactly. Through simulation study fur an inverted pendulum, we illustrate that the proposed algorithm has the better control performance than the existing one.
Collision avoidance for the aircraft can be stated as a problem of maintaining a safe distance between aircrafts in conflict. Optimal collision avoidance problem seeks to minimize the given cost function while simultaneously satisfying the constraints. The cost function can be a function of time or input. This paper addresses the trajectory time-optimization problem for collision avoidance of the unmanned aerial vehicles. The problem is difficult to handle, because it is a two points boundary value problem with dynamic environment. Some simplifying algorithms are used for application in on-line operation. Although there are more complicated problems, by prediction of conflict time and some assumptions, we changed a dynamic environment problem into a static one.

Practical applications of learning systems usually involve complex domains exhibiting nonlinear behavior and dilution by noise. Consequently, an intelligent system must be able to adapt to nonlinear processes as well as probabilistic phenomena. An important class of application for a knowledge based systems in prediction: forecasting the future trajectory of a process as well as the consequences of any decision made by e system. This paper examines the robustness of data mining tools under varying levels of noise while predicting nonlinear processes in the form of chaotic behavior. The evaluated models include the perceptron neural network using backpropagation (BPN), the recurrent neural network (RNN) and case based reasoning (CBR). The concepts are crystallized through a case study in predicting a Henon process in the presence of various patterns of noise.
