This study was carried out about interior design of trailer car for Korean High speed Train of Maximum operating speed of 350km/h. The interior main item design of high speed train is performed in order to satisfy the function of speed, safety and comfort concerning the RAMSH, ENVIRONMENT, ACTIVITY AND INFORMATION, This paper focuses on what is the design principle concerning the above mentioned factors and how did we apply that in the korea high speed train.

The psychophysical magnitude estimation thechnique can provide a useful tool for determining the best design features of a product in terms of user preference, especially when it is difficult or almost impossible to obtain objective and quantitative data on the user performance. In this research, several interior design features of a high speed train such as arrangement of passenger seats, and availability of interior facilities were examined quantitatively to provide interior design recommendations for the high speed train. A train simulator was built to provide a realistic interior enviror enviroment of the high speed train, and individual design features were manipulated by using a three-factor within-subject experimental design. At the same time, a psychophysical scale of verbal descriptors ranging from "extremly like" to "extremly dislike" was developed to explain the magnitude estimates of the design features in ordinary language.n ordinary language.

This paper shows the results of exterior and interior design of a prototype test train(HSR 350X) which was developed in R＆D project titled "Development of High Speed Railway Technology". The prototype test train, which has two power cars, two motorized trailers and three trailers, is now being tested on high speed line. The improved conceptual design work of a new commercial train and next generation′s train is also peformed for future needs.

The purpose of this research is to suggest the ultimate solution to the interior elements and ways to express specific function within interior design of the new high-speed train station in Korea through careful studies based on the characteristics of each areas in the stations. During the research, it became very clear that the most important points in designing of the high speed train station's interior space can be found from close examination on whether each space allocation was thoughtfully organized to provide enough space to accommodate various activities of the users. Another point is to realize, within the space program, that there should be a clear understanding of the future expansion plan and reserving sufficient areas for the future growth. Also the problem of requiring larger floor areas to accommodate various functions divided by separate units must be recognized simultaneously during the programming. The new high-sped train must be able to function as a multi service facility of the future. In summary this research is to present datas and suggestion to various areas in the station and redefine its new meaning of train station space program with much borader concept which can be adopted to the process of better space programing.

Design target values of transmission loss in a high-speed train wall are suggested by calculating the difference between interior and exterior noise levels of it. Exterior noise level distribution on the boundary of train wall is calculated by Sysnoise, with sound source input prepared by experiments. Two kinds of exterior sound sources are considered, the rolling noise of train wheels on the rail and the aerodynamic noise from the pantograph. Interior noise level is provided by high-speed design target. Transmission loss characteristics according to the frequency band are examined.

The interior sound pressure level of the Korean high-speed train(KHST) is predicted by geometrical acoustic method. For the Purpose of assuring the prediction of Interior noise of KHST by the geometrical acoustic scheme, calculated sound level values of the Korean train express(KTX) by Identical geometrical method are compared with measured values of KTX prototype vehicle by experiment. Contribution of individual sound source of KHST vehicle Into the interior response positions is calculated and sound sources are classified in influential order. Hence, it is reasonable approach to reduce sound power of most contributing noise source first. Sensitivity of the interior response position's sound pressure level (SPL) with respect to train wall sections' transmission loss are carried on and acoustically sensitive spot is identified, for example window area for passenger cabin case. Those contribution and sensitivity analysis results are suggested to design quieter train efficiently.

Environment has formed characters of one society and the society has formed its characteristic cultural behaviors. Oppositely cultural behaviors make the characteristic products like environment and space products. It gives the idea that we can create cultural space by examining cultural characteristics. This research bases on the 5 cultural dimensions of Geert Hofstede to inspect cultural quality of Korea and the 10 cultural factors of Edward. T. Hall in order not to omit some part of cultural characters. From April 2004, KTX which is originated from TGV of France began toroll in Korea. It is interesting that the same interior of train is used by two different cultures. The method to find out the special quality of transportation culture of Korea passed 5 steps like following; 1) making a questionnaire to understand general concepts 2) observation to make dear what are the special behaviors in the interior of train 3) comparison valuation with marking sheet of the interiors of KTX and HSR in order to find out which space Korean people prefer 4) comparison of behaviors in the interior of KTX and TGV 5) Interviewing and surveying the opinions of passengers of KTX. With these methods it would be possible to seek out the characters, preferencesand needs for the interior space of train. There were remarkable things like following 1) importance of privacy from the other's eyes 2) seriousness of individual seat because of the short term transportation 3) necessity of continuous information because of 'Uncertainty Avoidance Culture' 4) absence of moving 5) requirement of bright and comfortable interior like one's inner room 6) preference to take a seat as a group with their friends or family due to 'Collective Culture' 7) self-defense and self-protection of one's baggage because of 'Uncertainty Avoidance Culture'. With these discoveries this research suggests guidelines to design interior of train of Korea.

Opening commercial service of KTX at the time of demanding more flexible train set for HONAM line and JEONLA line, it's necessary for the Korean High speed train, performing the stabilization; to modify the design in aspect of passenger and maintenance. In order to ensure the optimized interior design in Korean High speed train, it is necessary to review the major items such as disabled passenger facility, toilet, seat arrangement, compartment partition and door, access door, electrical cabinet, color and paint through the European standard and compare with other high speed train.

Future-oriented train design should be able to provide highly refined traffic culture and public transportation service by achieving 'higher value addition, sensitization, and humanization' and then securing safety, convenience, and amenity. Therefore, design of FRT, as a means of environment-friendly public transportation, should have new concepts achieving harmony between design and technology. Consequently, when designing interior of trains for public transportation, it should aim for user-centered strategies. This approach is essentially applied to vehicle design and inducement to new concepts by design aesthetics and their verification become requirements for train Interior design, which should be equipped with sensitivity and functional images. Accordingly, a study on the correlation between constituents in order to implement design is essential to design planning and realization of strategies.
