One of the important issues for multimedia communications over ATM netowrks is efficient use of net-work resources since transmitting video at low cost requires high utilization of channel bandwidth. In this paper, we propose an effective bandwidth estimation scheme for MPEG sources in ATM networks. It has been known difficult to allocate effective transmission bandwidth to MPEG sources due to its bursty charactersitics. The MPEG traffic stream can bemodeled using five traffic parameters:service rate, burst load ratio, interburst load ratio, burst period, and interburst period. Using these parameters, a transmission bandwidth for each source can be estimated, and the estimated bandwidth is applied synchronously to reduce the queue size in a buffer. For a simple network modelof a high speed link that multiplexes a number of virtual-circuit connections, simulations on adaptive bandwidth allocation were performed, and the results show that the queueing delay is significantly reduced, when compared to a fixed bandwidth allocation.

In vehicle ad-hoc network (VANET) environments, traffic related information such as accident information, emergency information and real time traffic condition have to be delivered to on-board-unit (OBU) or/and road-side-equipment (RSE) for preventing traffic accidents in advance. In this paper, we introduce a Multi-Channel MAC (MCM) since the existing single channel operation may cause packet transmission delay and unexpected communication failure. To offer a seamless safety message transmission during the various services, it is necessary to manage the MAC scheduler in wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) systems. The MCM consists of MAC softwares and MAC hardwares where the former and the later ones are implemented with real time operation system based C language and FPGA module with VHDL language, respectively. The performance and QoS are verified by practical measurements and compared with the scheme using single channel operation.
The fact that error probability is higher in wireless communication environment than the one in a fixed network makes it inappropriate to apply the same DLC (Data Link Control) protocol used in a wireline network to a wireless network. And since the existing DLC protocol for wireless network was optimized for low-rate data service, it is not suitable for a wireless network environment which should support high-speed and multimedia traffic. Therefore it is desperate to have a new DLC protocol for todays wireless mobile communication environment. In this paper, we propose an error control scheme in WATM (Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode) environment. which supportsmultiple traffic attributes, high-speed, multimedia data service. In this paper we modified the existing ASR ARQ (Adaptive Selective Repeat Automatic Repeat Request) protocol where cells exceeding maximum allowable delay range are discarded. And adding FEC (Forward Error Correction) for delay-sensitive traffic resulted in smaller increase of transmission delay.
The multimedia traffic of continuous video and audio data via streaming service accounts for a significant and expanding portion of the Internet traffic. This streaming data delivery is mostly based on RTP with UDP. However, UDP does not support congestion control. For this reason, UDP causes the starvation of congestion controlled TCP traffic which reduces its bandwidth share during overload situation. In this paper, we propose a new TCP-friendly rate control scheme called 'TF-RTP(TCP-Friendly RTP)'. In the congested network state, the TF-RTP exactly estimates the competing TCP's throughput by using the modified parameters. Then, it controls the sending rate of the video streams. Therefore, the TF-RTP adjusts its sending rate to TCP-friendly and fair share with competing TCP traffics. Through the simulation, we prove that the TF-RTP correctly estimates the TCP's throughput and improves the TCP-friendliness and fairness.

The application of Internet of Things (IoT) in the next generation cellular networks imposes a new characteristic on the data traffic, where a massive number of small packets need to be transmitted. In addition, some emerging IoT-based emergency services require a real-time data delivery within a few milliseconds, referring to as ultra-low latency transmission. However, current techniques cannot provide such a low latency in combination with a mice-flow traffic. In this paper, we propose a dynamic resource reservation schema based on an air-interface slicing scheme in the context of a massive number of sensors with emergency flows. The proposed schema can achieve an air-interface latency of a few milliseconds by means of allowing emergency flows to be transported through a dedicated radio connection with guaranteed network resources. In order to schedule the delay-sensitive flows immediately, dynamic resource updating, silence-probability based collision avoidance, and window-based re-transmission are introduced to combine with the frame-slotted Aloha protocol. To evaluate performance of the proposed schema, a probabilistic model is provided to derive the analytical results, which are compared with the numerical results from Monte-Carlo simulations.

To cope with the explosive growth of traffic which is considered as one of the most biggest threat to current mobile communication systems, various solutions such as small cell and device-to-device communication have been exploited. Directional transmission in which transmission power of base station is focused onto the direction where the mobile station is located, can be used to increase throughput of the system. In this work, we develop a system-level simulator for cellular mobile communication systems using directional transmission and adaptive interference estimation scheme for directional transmission has been proposed. By using the developed simulator, the performance of cellular mobile communication systems with directional transmission is examined. Moreover, it is shown that the overall throughput of cellular system can be improved by utilizing directional transmission.

As many researchers have been interested in Green IT, Energy Efficient Ethernet(EEE) with rate adaptation has recently begun to receive many attention. However, the rate adaptation scheme can have different energy efficiency and delay according to the characteristics of various traffic patterns. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the impact of different traffic patterns on the energy efficiency and delay in Ethernet with rate adaptation. To do this, firstly we design a rate adaptation simulator which consists of Poisson based traffic generator, Pareto distribution based ON-OFF generator and Ethernet node with rate adaptation by using OPNET Modeler. Using this simulator, we perform the simulation in view of the total number of switching, transmission rate reduction, energy saving ratio and average queueing delay. Simulation results show that IP traffic patterns with high self-similarity affect the number of switching, rate reduction and energy saving ratio. Additionally, the transition overhead is caused due to the high self-similar traffic.

In this paper, we proposed a node architecture and cell routing strategies for ATM applications in WDM multihop networks. The proposed node architecture employs the optical delay loop for storing the cell which is failed in out-link contention. This optical delay loop allows the delay of one cell without the electro-optic conversion. Therefore, we can get the advantages of S&F(Store-and-Forward) routing in Deflection-based all-optical networks. To support the ATM applications efficiently. we considered the transmission priority of ATM cell so that high priority cell can be transmitted with lower loss and shorter delay than low priority one. Two kinds of routing strategies are designed for this architecture: Scheme-Ⅰand Scheme-Ⅱ. Scheme-Ⅰapplies S&F routing to high cell and Deflection routing to low cell, i.e., high cells are routed along the shortest path based on S&F routing, but low cells are deflected or lost. Schem-Ⅱ is similar to Scheme-Ⅰexcept that low cells can occupy the optical loop if it is available. This Scheme-Ⅱ increases the utilization of network resources without decreasing the throughput of high cell by reducing the low cell loss rate when traffic load is low. Simulation results show that our routing strategies have better performance than conventional ones under non-uniform traffic as well as uniform traffic.

Overcoming inter-cell interference and spectrum scarcity are major issues in heterogeneous cellular networks. Static Frequency reuse schemes have been proposed as an effective way to manage the spectrum and reduce ICI(Inter cell Interference) in cellular networks. In a kind of static frequency reuse scheme, the allocations of transmission power and subcarriers in each cell are fixed prior to system deployment. This limits the potential performance of the static frequency reuse scheme. Also, most of dynamic frequency reuse schemes did not consider small cell and the network environment when the traffic load of each cell is heavy and non-uniform. In this paper, we propose an inter-cell resource allocation algorithm that dynamically optimizes subcarrier allocations for the multi-cell heterogeneous networks. The proposed dynamic frequency reuse scheme first finds the subcarrier usage in each cell-edge by using the exhaustive search and allocates subcarrier for all the cells except small cells. After that it allocates subcarrier for the small cell and then iteratively repeats the process. Proposed dynamic frequency reuse scheme performs better than previous frequency reuse schemes in terms of the throughput by improving the spectral efficiency due to it is able to adapt the network environment immediately when the traffic load of each cell is heavy and non-uniform.
The mobile telecommunication system has been growing exponentially after 1990s due to the high population in a city and the growth of mobile user. In this time, the current mobile system mainly concentrates on the voice communication. However, in the next generation, mobile users want to get very diverse services via mobile terminal such as the Internet access, web access, multimedia communication, and etc. For this reason, the next generation system, such as the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services) system, has to support the packet data service and it will play the major role in the system. By the way, since the Web service is based on TCP, most of the Internet traffic TCP traffic. Therefore, efficient transmission of TCP traffic will take very important role in the performance of packet data service. There are many researches about improving TCP performance over wireless network. In those schemes, the UMTS system adapts the link layer retransmission scheme. However, there are rarely studies about the exact performance of the link layer retransmission scheme in the face of dynamic changes of wireless environment over the UMTS system. The dynamic changes of wireless environment, such as wireless bandwidth, can degrade TCP performance directly. So, in this paper, we simulate and analyze the TCP performance in the UMTS system with dynamic wireless environments. Then, we propose a simple scheme for minimizing TCP performance degradation. As a result of simulation, we can find that when wireless environment is changed dynamically, the probability of TCP timeout is increased, and the TCP performance is degraded very much. In this situation, the proposed simple scheme shows good performance. It saves wireless resources and reduces the degradation of TCP performance without large overhead of the base station.
