  • In this paper, we present hybrid ARQ techniques to improve the throughput performance in high speed packet transmission such as Internet or multimedia services. In order to evaluate the performance of the three different types of hybrid ARQ schemes, systemized link level simulations based on WWW traffic model are considered. In this paper, we also consider the simulated performance for an average link throughput and a normalized packet delay to compare the hybrid ARQ with link adaptation scheme in GPRS.

  • The DCF of IEEE 802.11 standard coordinates transmissions onto the shared communication channel based on CSMA/CA protocol. Currently, 802,11 is the most widely deployed wireless LAN standard. In this paper, for 802.11-based wireless LAN we propose a service differentiation scheme adopting different contention window sizes and retransmission schemes for two different types of data packets and we present a Markov model for the state of a given station under a finite load traffic condition. We then derive an algorithm to find the transmission probability and the throughput. The proposed model is validated through simulation under various system settings.

  • By using wireless terminal, the number of users who wish to use the multimedia service like the Internet as well as Short Message Services and voice service has increased dramatically over the last years. We propose the method that improves Mobile IPv4 (MIPv4) Regional Registration in wireless mobile networks to decrease traffic's transmission delay and message generation compared with an existing method We design the scheme in MIPv4 environments that a packet do not pass through the home agent transmitted from correspondent node to mobile node, if a mobile node moves to other mobility agent. Simulation results show that the proposed method significantly reduces the expenses for registration and delivering packet.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 networks are a feasible platform candidate for connecting all health-care-related equipment dispersed across a hospital room to collect critical time-sensitive data about patient health state, such as the heart rate and blood pressure. To meet the quality of service requirements of health-care systems, this paper proposes a multi-priority queue system that differentiates between various types of frames. The effect of the proposed system on the average delay and throughput is explored herein. By employing different contention window parameters, as in IEEE 802.11e, this multi-queue system prioritizes frames on the basis of priority classes. Performance under both saturated and unsaturated traffic conditions was evaluated using a novel analytical model that comprehensively integrates two legacy models for 802.15.4 and 802.11e. To improve the accuracy, our model also accommodates the transmission retries and deferment algorithms that significantly affect the performance of IEEE 802.15.4. The multi-queue scheme is predicted to separate the average delay and throughput of two different classes by up to 48.4% and 46%, respectively, without wasting bandwidth. These outcomes imply that the multi-queue system should be employed in health-care systems for prompt allocation of synchronous channels and faster delivery of urgent information. The simulation results validate these model's predictions with a maximum deviation of 7.6%.

  • It is widely accepted that the coverage with high user densities in mobile multimedia environments can only be achieved with small cell such as micro- and pico-cell. If handover events occur during the transmission of multimedia, the efficient resource reservation and handover methods are necessary in order to maintain the same QoS of transmitted multimedia traffic because the QoS may be defected by some delay and information loss. In this paper, we propose a resource allocation method in the next generation mobile communication systems, in which the resource allocation process has a tight relation with call admission, call load, and packet scheduling. The simulation results show that our proposed method provides a excellent performance.

  • With the rapid increase of energy consumption and environmental problems, the need for green techniques is increasing. Network coding can provide a solution by reducing unnecessary data transmission and by estimating traffic patterns. In addition, it can amplify the synergy with the cognitive radio network (CR) since the CR has recognition and optimal decision functionalities. In this paper, we propose a network coding based green cognitive radio network. With the simulations, we show that the proposed scheme is up to 25% better than the previous work.

  • In order to deliver multicast traffic efficiently, multicast routing and reliable transmission mechanisms are required. The reliable delivery implies that lost packets must be retransmitted, which in turn requires that transmitted packets be stored in a retransmission buffer. Therefore how to manage a retransmission buffer is important and, in this paper, we try to solve the problem of how many packets should be maintained in the buffer. Our proposed scheme, the timer-based buffer management (TBM), maintains only necessary amount of buffer based on the timer value calculated from the NAKs between the replier and receivers on a multicast tree and can adjust to the dynamic network conditions. By performing simulations, we show that TBM manages the buffer efficiently regardless of the error situation, network size, and so on.

  • The range of hardware implementation increases in communication systems as high-speed processing is required for high data rate. In the broadband wireless access (BWA) system based on IEEE standard 802.16 the functions of higher part in the MAC layer to Provide data needed for generating MAC PDU are implemented in software, and the tasks from formatting MAC PDUs by using those data to transmitting the messages in a modem are implemented in hardware. In this paper, the interface hardware for efficient message exchange between MAC and PHY layers in the BWA system is designed. The hardware performs the following functions including those of the transmission convergence(TC) sublayer; (1) formatting TC PDU(Protocol data unit) from/to MAC PDU, (2) Reed-solomon(RS) encoding/decoding, and (3) resolving DL MAP and UL MAP, so that it controls transmission slot and uplink and downlink traffic according to the modulation scheme of burst profile. Also, it provides various control signal for PHY modem. In addition, the truncated binary exponential backoff (TBEB) algorithm is implemented in a subscriber station to avoid collision on contention-based transmission of messages. The VLSI architecture performing all these functions is implemented and verified in VHDL.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance, particularly the flow control mechanism, of the CCITT X.25 protocol in a packet-switched network. In this analysis, we consider the link and packet layers separately, and investigate the performance in three measures; normalized channel throughput, mean transmission time, and transmission efficiency. Each of these measures is formulated in terms of given protocol parameters such as windos size, $T_1$ and $T_2$ values, message length, and so forth. We model the service procedure of the inpur traffic based on the flow control mechanism of the X.25 protocol, and investigate the mechanism of the sliding window flow control with the piggybacked acknowlodgment scheme using a discrete-time Markov chain model. With this model, we study the effect of variation of the protoccol parameters on the performance of the X.25 protocol. From the numerical results of this analysis one can select the optimal valuse of the protocol parameters for different channel environments. it has been found that to maintain the trasnmission capacity satisfactorily, the window size must be greater than or equal to 7 in a high-speed channel. The time-out value, $T_1$, must carefully be selected in a noisy channel. In a normal condition, it should be in the order of ls. The value of $T_2$ has some effect on the transmission efficiency, but is not critical.

  • The performance of peripheral devices is improving rapidly to meet the needs of users for multimedia data. Therefore, the peripheral interface with wide bandwidth and high transmission rate becomes necessary to handle large amounts of data in real time for multiple high-performance devices. PCI Express is a fast serial interface with the use of packets that are compatible with previous PCI and PCI-X. In this paper, we design and verify general peripheral interface using serial link. It includes two kinds of traffic class (TC) labels which are mapped to virtual channels (VC). The design adopts TC/VC mapping and the scheme of arbitration by priority. The design uses a packet which can be transmitted through up to four transmission lanes. The design of general peripheral interface is described in Verilog HDL and verified using ModelSim. For FPGA verification, Xilinx ISE and SPARTAN XC3S400 are used.We used Synopsys Design Compiler as a synthesis tool and the used library was MagnaChip 0.35um technology.
