  • This thesis proposes a new type of Input-Output Buffered ATM Switch which employs an arbiter and its performance under different traffic conditions studied. The proposed switch is designed with a view to exploit the architecture and other characteristics of the arbiter The primary aim of the proposed switch is the elimination, or at least, the reduction of HOL blocking phenomenon which occurs in the simple input buffered switch. Several HOL arbitration algorithms have been proposed for this purpose in the literature. The Proposed switch attempts to reduce the HOL blocking as it uses the arbiter and the buffer at the output Port in an effective manner. The arbiter is designed to work with Three Phase Algorithm which is one of the many well known HOL arbitration algorithms . The proposed switch acquires control over priority transmission through the REd signal. As the signals are transmitted to the arbiter, the latter controls the one which is sent by the input buffer. Computer simulation results have been provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed switch under non-uniform random traffic conditions.

  • In general, TDMA and FDMA have been used for multiple access communication methods. Recently. However, ALOHA and CSMA protocols came to exist as new schemes for VSAT data networks and LANs, respectively. These schemes are proven to be effective for packet switched communication systems that has bursty traffic but packet collisions. In this paper we analyze capture statistics arising from fading channels in packet radio communication systems in the context of ALOHA protocol. We derive general results of the exact form of capture probabilities and present numerical data for wide range of fading parameters. Since the capture probabilities are found to approach zero when the number of transmitted signals become larger, we are able to determine the achievable channel throughput by a least squares fitting of an exponential-type function to the probabilities.

  • Message Signs (VMS) structures offer an increase in traffic safety through their ability to relay massages to motorists for warnings of hazards ahead, traffic congestion, accidents, and lane closings. The geometry of these signs sometimes results in the significant cyclic loading of the supports structure due to wind gusts, which can result from passing trucks or from natural wind. This study presents the results of analytical and experimental investigations of VMS structures. The commercially available softwareGTSTRUDL (2003) was used to perform space-frame structural analyses of these welded tubular structures. Fatigue evaluations were performed using stress ranges from field measurements and from structural analyses. Based on the results of the structural analyses that were conducted, where fatigue design loadings that had been derived from AASHTO Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals (2001) were used, the structures that had been studied were found not to have infinite fatigue life. According to the limited measurements that were made in this study, the fatigue design loadings derived from AASHTO Specifications (2001) appear to be conservative, but they are not overly conservative. The results of this study should be used to make a reasonable design of VMS structures, and to maintain their standards.

  • Traffic accident frequency and severity level in Korea are known to be very serious. Especially the number of pedestrian fatalities was much worse and 1.6 time higher than the OECD average. According to the National Police Agency, the flash signals are reported to have many safety benefits as well as travel time reduction, which is opposed to the foreign studies. With this background of expanding the flash signal, this research aims to investigate the overall impact of the flash signal operation on safety, investigating and comparing the accident occurrence on the flash signal and the full signal intersections. For doing this accident prediction models for both flash and full signal intersections were estimated using independent variables (geometric features and traffic volume) and 3-year (2011-2013) accident data collected in Seoul. Considering the rare and random nature of accident occurrence and overdispersion (variance > mean) of the data, the negative binomial regression model was applied. As a result, installing wider crosswalk and increasing the number of pedestrian push buttons seemed to increase the safety of the flash signal intersections. In addition, the result showed that the average accident occurrence at the flash signal intersections was higher than at the full signal-operated intersections, 9% higher with everything else the same.

  • The current traffic regulations in Korea stipulate that traffic should keep to the right according to the Road Traffic Act; thus, customarily, the 'seat-on-the-left' system has been maintained. However, an increased number of 'seat-on-the-right' vehicles are being imported via a variety of routes from foreign countries, especially from Japan. According to the data from July 2004, 1,343 cargo vehicles and 593 passenger vehicles (for diplomats, etc.) were currently being driven on domestic road. As these 'seat-on-the-right' vehicles are not compatible with the domestic transportation system of driving on the right side of the road, there is a high risk of accidents. Experiments show that such system-driver mismatch causes longer operation time for directional signals, higher error frequency in yielding due to additional mental adjustments for 'seat-on-the-right' vehicle drivers. These are, therefore, influential factors which can lead to possible accidents. Furthermore, when the experiments test the visual range during overtaking maneuvers, the visual range of the drivers in the 'seat-on-the-left' vehicle was 2.95 meters as opposed to 1.7 meters for the drivers in the 'seat-on-the-right' vehicle. (In the experiment, the drivers were instructed to look at the paper cup 10 meters away from the back of drivers' seat.) The results demonstrate that it is necessary to have additional safety measures be implemented for the 'seat-on-the-right' vehicles.

  • Most research efforts on the OCDMA technology assume single-bit-per-symbol transmission techniques such as on-off keying. However, achieving high spectral efficiency with such transmission techniques is likely to be a challenging task due to the "unipolar" nature of optical signals. In this paper, an M-ary transmission technique using more than two equally-weighted codes is proposed for OCDMA local area networks, and ie BER performance and spectral efficiency are analyzed. Poison frame arrival and randomly generated codes are assumed for the BER analysis, and the probability of incorrect symbol detection is analytically derived. From the approximation, it is found that there exists an optimal code weight that minimizes the BER, and its physical interpretation is drawn in an intuitive and simple statement. Under the assumption of this optimized code weight and sufficiently large code dimension, it is also shown that the spectral efficiency of OCDMA networks can be significantly improved by increasing the number (M) of symbols used. Since the cost of OCDMA transceivers is expected to increase with the code dimension, we finally provide a guideline to determine the optimal number of symbols for a given code dimension and traffic load.

  • A major problem with high-mast light poles is the effects that wind vortex shedding can have on the pole itself because of the lock-in phenomenon. It is desired that the coefficients in the AASHTO Standard Specifications ($5^{th}$ edition) for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals be analyzed and refined. This is for the belief that the span of the shapes of poles for which the coefficients are used is much too broad and a specific coefficient for each different shape is desired. The primary objective of this study is to develop wind vortex shedding coefficient for a multisided shape. To do that, an octagonal shape was used as the main focus since octagonal cross sectioned high-mast light poles are one of the most common shapes in service. For the needed data, many wind parameters, such as the static drag coefficient, the slope of aerodynamic lift coefficient, Strouhal number, the lock-in range of wind velocities producing vibrations, and variation of amplitude of vortex-induced vibration with Scruton number are needed. From wind tunnel experiments, aerodynamic parameters were obtained for an octagonal shape structure. Even though aerodynamic coefficients are known from past test results, they need to be refined by conducting further wind tunnel tests.

  • The accidents caused by drivers while driving are considered as the major causes along with other causes such as conditions of roads, weather and cars. In this study, we investigated the driver's workloads under three different driving conditions (Weather, Driving time zone, and Traffic density) through analyzing biological signals obtained from a car driving simulator system. The proposed method is able to detect R waves and R-R interval calculation in the ECG. Heart rate variability (HRV) was investigated for the time domain to determine the changes in driver's conditions.

  • Owing to the development of Internet of Things (IoT), the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication is going to foresee a substantial increase of mobile traffic demand. Energy efficiency and spectral efficiency are the challenges in a 5G network. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technique to increase the system efficiency by adaptive power control (PC) in a 5G network. This paper proposes an efficient PC scheme based on evolutionary game theory (EGT) model for uplink power-domain NOMA system. The proposed PC scheme allows users to adaptively adjusts their transmit power level in order to improve their payoffs or throughput which results in an increase of the system efficiency. In order to separate the user signals, a successive interference cancellation (SIC) receiver installed at the base station (BS) site. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EGT-based PC scheme outperforms the traditional game theory-based PC schemes and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of energy efficiency and spectral efficiency.

  • Bridges are ones of fundamental facilities for roads which become social overhead capital facilities and they are designed to get safety in their life cycles. However as time passes, bridge can be damaged by changes of external force and traffic environments. Therefore, a bridge should be repaired and maintained for extending its life cycle. The working load on a bridge is one of the most important factors for safety, it should be calculated accurately. The most important load among working loads is live load by a vehicle. Thus, the travel characteristics and weight of vehicle can be useful for bridge maintenance if they were estimated with high reliability. In this study, a B-WIM system in which the bridge is used for a scale have been developed for measuring the vehicle loads without the vehicle stop. The vehicle loads can be estimated by the developed B-WIM system with the reaction responses from the supporting points. The algorithm of developed B-WIM system have been verified by numerical analysis.
