In this paper, the authors studied a comprehensive study of national physical distribution costs used here was originally developed by J. L. Heskett(1962) and modified in Korean context by Oh-Kyung Kwon(1997). Using this method the authors calculated national physical distribution costs in Korea from 1984 to 1996. Unlke the major industrialized countries, national physical distribution costs in Korea showed continuous increasing trend in every senses. Using this time series data on physical distribution costs, we analysis the inefficiencies in the physical distribution and figured out the sources of these inefficiencies. The major sources of increasing physical distribution costs in Korea were (1) increasing traffic congestion measured by number of automobiles per road-kilometer, (2) increasing real wages, and (3) high interest rates. Especially, alternatives adopted by firms facing increasing traffic congestion were buying more vehicles, which in turn caused more serious congestion ever. This inefficient cycle in physical distribution area should be cut somehow in order to restore national competitiveness of Korean frims by reducing physical distributins costs.

In this paper, the improvement of the anti-snow performance of a high-speed train (HST) is studied using the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations (URANS) coupled with the Discrete Phase Model (DPM). The influences of the proposed flow control scheme on the velocity distribution of the airflow and snow particles, snow concentration level and accumulated mass in the bogie cavities are analyzed. The results show that the front anti-snow structures can effectively deflect downward the airflow and snow particles at the entrance of the cavities and alleviate the strong impact on the bogie bottom, thereby decrease the local accumulated snow. The rotational rear plates with the deflecting angle of 45° are found to present well deflecting effect on the particles' trajectories and force more snow to flow out of the cavities, and thus significantly reduce the accretion distribution on the bogie top. Furthermore, running speeds of HST are shown to have a great effect on the snow-resistance capability of the flow control scheme. The proposed flow control scheme achieves more snow reduction for HST at higher train's running speed in the cold regions.

As a preliminary study of enter or leaving traffic patterns of the Korea main port, port Management Information System (Port-MIS) data was used to check the volume of vessels entering and leaving the port of Busan, and three consecutive days from each seasons were selected for study. Selected 12-day General Information Center on Maritime Safety & Security (GICOMS) data was also used to analyze the traffic pattern in the main traffic lane of Busan port for dangerous goods carrier. Also, the distance between dangerous goods carriers and Oryukdo breakwater of east breakwater in the main traffic lane was analyzed. Collision probability was estimated using the cumulative probability distribution function of the normal distribution for the maritime traffic safety audit scheme based on the assumption that a ship's trajectory has a normal distribution for a section of the route. However, in case of entry or leaving thorough the Oryukdo breakwater and entry thorough the east breakwater, ship's sailing trajectories were revealed not to follow a normal distribution via regularity testing using a KS-test and SW-test. Especially in the north port, the tendency of the right side of the ship to pass was remarkable. It is desirable to develop a traffic model suitable for the characteristics of the port rather than to apply general traffic theories, and to apply this model to a maritime traffic safety diagnosis, so further research is needed.

It has well known that the congestion of traffic and it's distribution. There are very important problems in the traffic control systems. In this paper, we will purpose an ITFS(Intelligent Traffic Forecasting System) which can determine the car classes and transport them to ITS(Intelligent Traffic control System). The system will be used the Inductive Loop Detector(ILD)and the Fuzzy logic and shown the effectiveness by the computer simulation.
In the packet data network systems beyond 3G, the service quality of current users is affected by traffic load due to the packet burstiness. There also exists a hot cell problem, a well-known problem of cellular systems, caused by traffic centraliBation. Hot cell problem is one of the major reasons of degrading system performance because hot cell increases the call drop rate without fully utilization of system resource. Therefore, it is very important to distribute the traffic on the several neighboring cells so that system uses its resource effectively and maintains the quality of service. In this paper, we propose the adaptive handoff algorithms for distributing traffic in the packet data network systems. In addition, we propose a new load estimation method with MAC state diagram suitable for packet data network systems. Through the simulation results, we could find that proposed algorithm is able to improve efficiency of system resource and to assure the service quality of users through traffic distribution.

This paper is the part II of research results on the performance evaluation of fully interconnected ATM switch, and includes the performance evaluation results for bursty traffic and nonuniform distribution. The switch model is a fyully interconnected switch type proposed by ETRI and is the proper architecutre for a small-sized switch element. The proposed switch consists of two steps of buffering scheme in the switch fabric in order to effectively absorb the effect of bursty nature of ATM traffic. The switch uses bit addressing method for addressing shcmeme and thus it is easy to implement multicasting function without adding additional functional block. In order to incorporate the bursty nature of traffic in ATM networks, we use IBP(Interrupted Bernoulli Process) model as an input traffic model as well as random traffic model which has been used as a traditional traffic model. In order to design the various scenarios for simulation, we considered both uniform and nonuniform output distribution, and also implemented multicast function. In this paper, we presented the simulation results in diverse environments and evaluated the performance of the switch.
Increase of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)-based video popularity causes that broadband and Internet service providers' links transmit mainly multimedia content. Network planning, traffic engineering or congestion control requires understanding of the statistical properties of network traffic; therefore, it is desirable to investigate the characteristic of traffic traces generated, among others, by systems which employ adaptive bit-rate streaming. In our work, we investigate traffic originating from 120 client-server pairs, situated in an emulated laboratory environment, and multiplexed onto a single network link. We show that the structure of the traffic is distinct from the structure generated by first and second generation of HTTP video systems, and furthermore, not similar to the structure of general Internet traffic. The obtained traffic exhibits negative correlations, anti-persistence, and its distribution function is skewed to the right. Furthermore, we show that the traffic generated by clients employing the same or similar play-out strategies is positively correlated and synchronised (clustered), whereas traffic originated from different play-out strategies shows negative or no correlations.
This paper discusses models for estimating dynamic travel times based on probability theory. The dynamic travel time models proposed in the paper are formulated assuming that the travel time of a vehicle depends on the distribution of the traffic stream condition with respect to the location along a road when the subject vehicle enters the starting point of a travel distance or with respect to the time at the starting point of a travel distance. The models also assume that the dynamic traffic flow can be represented as an exponential distribution function among other types of probability density functions.

Traffic load comprise primary input to pavement design causing pavement damage. therefore it should be proceeded suitable traffic load distribution modeling for pavement design and analysis. Traffic load have been represented by equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) which convert mixed traffic stream into one value for design purposes. But there are some limit to apply ESALs to other roads because it is empirical value developed as part of the original AASHO(American Association of State Highway Officials) road test. There have been many efforts to solve these problems. Several leading country have implemented M-E(Mechanistic-Empirical) design procedures based on mechanical concept. As a result, they established traffic load quantification method using load distribution model known as Axle Load Spectra. This paper details Axle Load Spectra and presents axle load distribution model based on normal mixture distribution function using truck load data collected by WIM system installed in national highway. Axle load spectra and axle load distribution model presented in this paper could be useful for basic data when making traffic load quantification plan for pavement design, overweight vehicle permit plan and pavement maintenance cost plan.

In this study, an imputation model using circular probability distribution was developed in order to overcome problems of missing data from a traffic survey. The existing ad-hoc or heuristic, model-based and algorithm-based imputation techniques were reviewed through previous studies, and then their limitations for imputing missing traffic volume data were revealed. The statistical computing language 'R' was employed for model construction, and a mixture of von Mises probability distribution, which is classified as symmetric, and unimodal circular probability were finally fitted on the basis of traffic volume data at survey stations in urban and rural areas, respectively. The circular probability distribution model largely proved to outperform a dummy variable regression model in regards to various evaluation conditions. It turned out that circular probability distribution models depict circularity of hourly volumes well and are very cost-effective and robust to changes in missing mechanisms.
