  • Oriental medicine, since its origin in China, has had a long history extending over 2000 years. Today, it comprises several types of medicine predominately practiced in East Asia, including traditional Chinese, traditional Korean, and Kampo medicine. The distinctive medical system of traditional Korean medicine was established shortly after the publication of Donguibogam by Dr. Heo Jun in 1613. Donguibogam is highly acclaimed across East Asia; in 2009, in light of its historical medical value, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization registered the book on its cultural heritage list. Here, we review the historical medical value of Donguibogam. The findings confirm that Donguibogam developed a unique and independent form of traditional Korean medicine and innovatively reformed the disease classification system. Moreover, Donguibogam emphasized the importance of disease prevention and medical pragmatism. This book also accelerated the development of folk medicine. Owing to its historical medical value, Donguibogam is now considered the 'bible' of Oriental medicine. Its wide acceptance has contributed to the expansion of Korean medicine utilization among the general public. Donguibogam has also played an important role in the establishment of traditional Korean medicine as a universally valid and original form of medicine, independent of traditional Chinese medicine.

  • Understanding the present condition of Oriental traditional medicine in different country is demanded for the Korean Traditional Medicine to prepare his orientation in future. Also it is not possible to separate the present condition of OTM from history of oriental medicine as a whole. This is valid for the introduction of TCM in the west. The first information have arrived in Europe by the terrestrial and maritime travelers accounts. The diplomatic way, with special reference to Jesuit fathers, has brought cultural and theoretical precise data. The physicians of East India Company and, later, of expeditionary forces, have supplied with practical data. Five periods follow one another: 1) Period when the source reached and are used in Europe. This first step is intimately involved with the use and comparison of similar factor between the two medical systems ; 2) "Discovery" and use of needles ; 3) latent period when techniques coming from acupuncture source were developed ; 4) "Chinese Acupuncture" correctly speaking ; 5) modern period or investigating period, when Eastern and Western people are trying to correlate data of traditional medicine with those of western science. • Orthopraxia & Dermatology in traditional Korean medicine has taken a large part of our medicine from the ancient times. However, studies that have been carried out so far were mainly concerned with specific disease or treatment but studies on the history of orthopraxia & dermatology in traditional Korean medicine have not been done largely. Subsequently, it is confirmed that diseases belonging to the category of orthopraxia & dermatology in traditional Korean medicine are carried with no less weight in the books other than literatures specialized in orthopraxia & dermatology while Korean medical literature is being researched with interests in the history of orthopraxia & dermatology in traditional Korean medicine. This paper mainly introduced and analyzed medical literatures containing diseases in orthopraxia & dermatology among Korean medical literatures which were classified into books on emergency measures, general medical documents and surgically specialized records prior to DongUiBoGam.
