  • Herbal plants or traditional Oriental medicine have been considered as a potential resource of new drug development worldwide. However, traditional Korean medicine has given little effort to the field of new drug development. This study reports on a plant-derived hepatotherapeutic drug, silymarin, which has been popularly used in many countries. It was discovered as an active compound from Silybum marianum (milk thistle) which has been known as a medicinal plant having hepatoprotective properties in both European and Asian countries. While it has been used as an herbal prescription in Asia, its active compounds or scientific mechanisms were intensively studied in Europe. Currently, silymarin is one of the most powerful herbal extracts in the world, and its usage is being expanded to many other medical purposes. This report would be helpful for providing an informative example of herbal-derived drug development to Oriental doctors or scientists in the Oriental medicinal field.

  • Traditional oriental medicine and western medicine have not only their own views of disease but also their own practical approach to disease. So, We should not identify the thing which is expressed as ‘ai’(癌) in traditional oriental medicine with the thing which is expressed as ‘cancer’ in western medicine. In traditional oriental medicine, the name of malignant tumor is also designated by it's sign and symptom as same as different disease. So it is difficult to compare directly ‘ai’(癌) with cancer. However, when we analysed processes and characteristics of disease, we can find many instances which is related to the things which is called as cancer by western medicine. So at first, we analysed the meaning of word, ai(癌). Secondly, through the searching many instances which are mentioned above, we classified four groups and investigated these. Four group is following like, First, the cases that ai(癌) is used in. Second, the case that is recognized as mass. Third, the case that has different shape with ai. Fourth, the case that has similar sign and symptom with cancer.

  • After recovery from acute carbon monoxide poisoning, some patients suffer from neuropsychiatric problems such as cognitive impairement, movement disorder, change of personality and mental disorder after lucid interval in which the patient has no symptom. This sequela of carbon monoxide poisoning is called delayed post-anoxic encephalopathy(DPE). No neuroprotective drug has yet demonstrated ecfficacy and hyperbaric oxygen treatment's effect have little scientific evidence in preventing and improving DPE. In such situation, korean traditional treatment may be helpful in treating the patient suffering from DPE. In this case report, we will describe the patient that has suffered from severe DPE involving cognitive impairment, gait disturbance and incontinence but has been improved successfully by korean traditional medicine treatment, especially Jowiseungchungtang. This case could present how we will study about DPE.

  • Cheong-Gang Medical Chart is 60 years worth of diagnosis records kept by Oriental Medicine Doctor Kim Young Hoon [金永勳, 號 晴崗 1882-1974], who held practice in Seoul's Jong-ro from 1915 till 1974. Kim Young Hoon's eldest son, Kim Ki Su (金琦洙) donated the medical records exceeding a thousand volumes to KyungHee University, and researches are being made presently. The author of Cheong-Gang Medical Chart, Kim Young Hoon, was a medical scholar who studied the essence of the traditional medicine of his time. He was handed down the quintessence of traditional medicine by keeping in touch with the prominent oriental doctors in Seoul at that time, and he constantly applied it to his practice and made records of it. Consequently, his diagnosis charts contain a whole new form of prescriptions, treatment skills, and processes of clinical application that have never been seen before in the texts of Korean Medicine. The writer has written a paper on the present condition of Cheong-Gang Medical Chart, which was published in the Journal of Korean Oriental Medicine in 2004. This manuscript reports the results of the test studies made to develop an efficient database model as a prior step to organizing the medical records into a data bank.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the controversial issues about objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) of pulse diagnosis and investigate the objectification of traditional Korean medicine and technical feasibility of pulse simulation through the suggestion of a pulse simulator. Methods: The concept, validity and reliability of OSCE and the current situation of medical simulation was described. The actual level and problems on the simulator development was presented through haptics and tactile technology in order to compose a pulse simulator for OSCE. Results: The pulse wave system of a pulse simulator should materialize through haptic technology and the classification of the differences between tactile sensation and tactile quality is essential for the development of the relevant pulse simulator for OSCE in traditional Korean medicine. Conclusions: The introduction and controversial issues of OSCE and methodology of pulse wave reappearance system are proposed for the objectification of Traditional Korean Medicine and the development of clinical technology.

  • Arriving in the '90s, the worldwide trend of longing for naturalism and popularity of complementary and alternative medicine in America has caused traditional Oriental Medicine and medicinal plants markets to develop rapidly. And China has been pursuing the globalization policy of Chinese medicine by the initiation of the society of traditional Chinese medicine. Under this situation, it is a time for us to think about in a serious manner whether existing organization and system of Oriental medicine and the department of Oriental medicine at the schools in Korea reflects reality or whether we should turn it to some different direction. The purpose of this research is to compare the educational systems in relation to the traditional medicine between Korea and China, and to seek and look into its implication, and also to make a contribution to further developments and changes of direction for Oriental medicine education in Korea. 1. I investigated carefully the educational system of the colleges of traditional Chinese medicine, and results from this survey revealed that the academic institutions for the medicinal training in China consists of varied systems, such as 7-year program for medicinal training linking with master degree course, 6-year program, 5-year program (more than 90%), 4-year program, and so on, so then China has been raising the specialists in their traditional medicine arena through those varied academic programs. Such an educational system as the department of Chinese medicine in order to educate and produce specialists or pharmacists specializing in traditional Chinese medicine is operated only by Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in terms of 7-year academic program for medicinal major that linked with master degree course, and the rest of schools run 5-year program or 4-year program (more than 90%). And other human resources required for cultivation of medicinal plants and manufacturing herbal medicines are mostly trained at 3-year course colleges or 2-year course vocational schools. 2. In connection with traditional Chinese medicine, there are a variety of departments in the schools in China other than Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology: i.e. Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Preclinical Medicine, Pharmaceuticals, Materials of Medicine, Phrenology and Law, Languages and Literature, etc. Therefore, these programs constitute multi academic system and also an appropriate educational base that fits in varied needs of market. Particularly, the university having 7-year program emphasize, English proficiency so that it can be considered that this academic program is a specialized course in order to achieve globalization of Chinese medicine. 3. In Korea, there are only 11 Oriental medicine schools with 6-year program which have been established by the private foundations and 3 departments of Oriental medicine at 4-year university. Therefore, we need to establish varied departments related to branches of our traditional medicine like China. 4. It is necessary to establish varied new departments related to Oriental Medicine that will be able to take a professional role in the course of pursuing the strategic goals such as scientification, globalization, standardization of Oriental Medicine, also that will meet needs of the world alternative and complementary medicine and herbal medicine markets. In order to achieve such strategic goals, we need to organize an academic system that will be different from existing systems and programs, also we are required to research further on the educational and training programs.
