Objectives: This case study examined the effects of treatment with traditional Korean medicine on a central post-stroke pain patient, who had impingement syndrome of the right shoulder. Methods: The patient received traditional Korean medical treatments, including acupuncture, warm-needling, moxibustion, and cupping, throughout the treatment period, and extracorporeal shock-wave therapy and physical therapy for part of the treatment period. The effects of treatments were measured with a manual muscle test (MMT), numerical rating scale (NRS), range of motion (ROM), and gait staging index (self-invented). Results: The clinical symptoms of the patient were improved considerably after the complete treatment. Conclusions: Traditional Korean medicine may be effective for treatment of central post-stroke pain in patients with impingement syndrome.

Diabetic cataract is a major complication of diabetes mellitus. Excess accumulation of sorbitol plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications such as cataract formation. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of the extract of the aerial parts of Aster koraiensis (AK) on diabetic cataractogenesis. To examine this further, we evaluated sorbitol accumulation during cataract development using streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat, an animal model of type 1 diabetes. Diabetic rats were treated orally with AK (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg body weight) once a day orally for 9 weeks. In vehicle-treated diabetic rats, lens opacity was increased, and lens fiber swelling and membrane rupture were observed. In addition, sorbitol accumulation in diabetic lens was markedly enhanced. However, AK treatment delayed the progression of diabetic cataract through the inhibition of sorbitol accumulation, and prevented lens fiber degeneration in a dose-dependent manner. These observations suggest that AK treatment can delay the progression of lens opacification in the diabetic rats during the early diabetic cataractogenesis.

Background : Currently, the absence of a unified terminology and proper translation about Traditional Korean Medicine is a problem that should be solved. Although Traditional Korean Medicine has undergone steady growth in popularity during the past years, the Westerner's poor access to information has been drawback to its reception in the West. Objective : This research is aimed to seek system for standardization of stroke terminology and proper translation into English. Conclusion : We proposed the method of making unified terminology and translation about stroke in Traditional Korean Medicine.

Objectives: There is no report on treatment of acute traumatic rotator cuff tear in Traditional Korean Medicine. We reported Traditional Korean Treatment for pain relief and better movement of acute traumatic rotator cuff tear. Methods: Shoulder MRI was used to confirm the diagnosis of tear of rotator cuff. The patient was treated with Traditional Korean Methods (Acupuncture, Herbal medicine, Pharmacopuncture) for 6 months. We evaluated the patient through VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), UCLA shoulder scale, ROM (Range of motion) and Shoulder MRI. Results: After 6 months of treatment, the patient's VAS was decreased whereas UCLA score and Shoulder ROM were increased. Rotator cuff tear was repaired on Shoulder MRI images. Conclusions: In acute traumatic rotator cuff tear, Korean Traditional Treatment is good method for pain relief and better movement.

Objecitves: Peel of Citrus unshiu (Rutaceae) has been used in traditional herbal prescriptions. Hesperidin and naringin contents of Citri Unshii Pericarpium were determined and compared to herbal prescriptions. Then, the different extractions from prescriptions are explained with traditional herbal theories. Methods: The herb and herbal prescriptions were extracted in boiled water. A quantitative analysis was made of hesperidin and naringin using HPLC with-reversed-phase CIS column and a UV detector at 204nm. Elution was carried out at 1.0ml/min with $38\%$ methanol. Results and Conclusions: The extract of Citri Unshii Pericarpium for 180 min was the better method for extracting naringin and hesperidin. The flavonoid contents in remedies are different among several traditional herbal prescriptions. The reason for the difference can be explained with traditional drug interaction theories.

Purpose: To review the effectiveness affecting to the shoulder functionalities and upper numbness by Traditional Korean Medical treatment who are given a surgical operation for breast resection by breast tumor Method: To report the patients with dysfunction of shoulder joint and numbness in upper limb after breast surgery who improved by Traditional Korean Medical treatment and to study Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) management of complications of breast surgery. Results: After about 2weeks treatment, patient's symptoms and signs were improved. TKM management was effective in recovery of shoulder function and upper limb numbness after breast surgery. Conclusion: We need to actively participate in management of complications of breast surgery as adjuvant therapy. And more study is needed for developing Traditional Korean Medical indication of complications of breast surgery.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of traditional Korean medicine treatment (TKM) on a patient with ACA infarction and hemorrhagic transformation with hemiplegia and urinary disturbance. Methods: A patient diagnosed with left anterior cerebral artery (ACA) infarction and hemorrhagic transformation was treated with electroacupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine. Results: Improvements in the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), modified Barthel Index (MBI), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), modified Rankin scale (mRS), and K-MMSE were observed following the TKM treatment [MMT Gr. (3/0)→Gr. (4+/4+), MBI 20→89, NIHSS 8→2, mRS 5→1, MMSE-K 21→28]. Conclusion: TKM treatment could help improve the symptoms of patients with ACA infarction and hemorrhagic transformation.

Objectives : This study was performed to review the research trends in treatment for acute alcohol intoxication in traditional Chinese medicine. Methods : 19 studies were selected by searching CNKI(China National Knowledge Infrastructure) from 2006 to 2011, and we performed a systemic review of them. Results : All studies are controlled clinical trials using pharmacopuncture therapy. Each experimental group was given various kinds of pharmacopuncture therapy, whereas each control group was given another western medicine or treatment. Emergent treatment was used in both groups. The results of 15 studies showed that pharmacopuncture therapy has an effect on the treatment of acute alcohol intoxication. However the quality of these clinical trials wasn't high. Conclusions : It seems that the researches for acute alcohol intoxication have been performed actively in traditional Chinese medicine. We hope that our study can activate clinical research for this disorder in Korean traditional medicine.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes of quality of life after reduction of muscluloskeletal pain treated with Korean traditional medicine. Methods : The authors observed reduction of musculoskeletal pain and recorded pain reduction by VAS. And we surveyed SF-36 twice, admission day and one month later and compared each other. Results : 1. Musculoskeletal pain with Korean traditional medical treatment decresed significantly. 2. As patients' musculoskeletal pain reduced, all parts of quality of life increased. Especially, the improvement of Bodily Pain(BP), Physical Function(PF), Vitality(VT), Mental Health(MH), General Health(GH) were statistically significant. Conclusions : Reduction of muscluloskeletal pain improved patient's physical, mental, emotional and social quality of life. But Social Function(SF) and Role Limitation(RP,RE) were less than others, so we need to develop complementary programs.

Medicine has a past, a present, and will have a future; the same can be said for many diseases. Even with the surprising development of modern medicine, traditional medicine, especially eastern Asian traditional medicines still exist and are widely used in those regions. But modern medicine and western pacific traditional medicines have different theories and applications for the same disease. In this review, traditional medical theory, used together with modern medicine, can be combined to shed light on the area of neuronal death.
