  • WIPO international government committee will finish to develop toolkit for making documentation on discussions of intellectual property protection with TK, GR until the late 2003. As they construct DB of TK, GR, it becomes in a hurry to construct DB of TK information in Korea. We looked into application of copyright in force and a lot of problems in terms of analyzing medical books in the resent condition or protecting them in Korea. There are 29 kinds which have been lost, 12 kinds which could have read in parts, 136 kinds which have been existed of Korean medical books before 1900. There are also a lot of medical books which have been published after 1900 and still are unpublished. It would be 406 medical books from China totally, 111 kinds from Chosun Dynasty version, 134 kinds from Euybangeuchui, 225 kinds from Hyangyackjibsungbang, 78 kinds from Dongeuybogam. We consider to know whether Korean medical books could been applied to the copyright in force or not in accordance with discussions of WIPO on the period, subject(author), contents of protection. If it is applied to the copyright in force, it will be decided to revise according to discussions of WIPO. On the other hand, the problem which is occurred to protect Korean medical books is friction with China as importing their medical books, to find our medical books actively which has been unpublished. Finally, We have to revise administration and intellectual property standards or protect our medical books by making new administration laws.

  • The application of antique medical instructions, practices, skills and knowledge has been considered as the most affordable treatment in many developing countries. The use of these preparations and prescriptions over generations has made a useful and valuable guide for drug discovery in modern medicine. Medical herbs have been of a high importance for this purpose. The genus Dorema, of Apiaceae family (Umbelliferae) has a wide use in ethnobotany and traditional medicine around the world. It has been used as a treatment for CNS disease, convulsion, upper respiratory tract problems, gastrointestinal disorder and high blood sugar. Furthermore, phytochemical investigations have reported Dorema species to contain a wide range of constituents including terpenes, coumarins and phenolic compounds. The current review summarizes comprehensive information regarding botany, phytochemistry and pharmacological aspects of Dorema spp.

  • A number of therapeutic drugs have been developed from functional chemicals found in plants. Knowledge of plants used for medicinal purposes has historically been transmitted by word of mouth or through literature. The aim of the present study is to provide a systemic platform for the development of lead compounds against breast cancer based on a traditional medical text. To verify our systematic approach, integrating processes consisted of text mining of traditional medical texts, 3-D virtual docking screening, and in vitro and in vivo experimental validations were demonstrated. Our text analysis system identified rutin as a specific phytochemical traditionally used for cancer treatment. 3-D virtual screening predicted that rutin could block EGFR signaling. Thus, we validated significant anti-cancer effects of rutin against breast cancer cells through blockade of EGFR signaling pathway in vitro. We also demonstrated in vivo anti-cancer effects of rutin using the breast cancer recurrence in vivo models. In summary, our innovative approach might be proper for discovering new phytochemical lead compounds designing for blockade of malignant neoplasm including breast cancer.

  • Objective : The main idea of this article is to investigate the shamanistic medical activities through the traditional Chinese classics in the Zhou Dynasty. The ancient shaman played a bridge role between human beings and supernatural things like ghosts. Even though he didn't have the super power, the ancients believed that he could take care of all kinds of illness. Therefore, it can be said that the medicine of the Zhou Dynasty was still under the shamanism although it had already started to be specialized and professionalized. Method : This article is going to look into the detailed aspects of the shamanistic medical activities, for example, divination of illness, Zhuyou(祝由), shamanistic preventive medicine, and so on, through the traditional Chinese classics of Zhou Dynasty. Result : The medical knowledge of that time stayed in the early stage, so it was simple and raw. Also it had scientific and unscientific characters in itself at the same time. That's why it could be included in the shamanism. And about the shamanistic medical activities seen on underground written attestations, they will be offered through another article of mine, entitled A Research of Shamanistic Medical Activities on Underground Written Attestations in the Zhou Dynasty(兩周出土文獻所見之醫療巫術考察), which is being written now. Conclusion : From beginning of the Eastern Zhou period, the medicine gradually got to be specialized. And then specialized medical treatments and shamanistic medical activities began to be divided as the different two occupations. However, it is an unchangeable truth that the ancient shaman played an important role in the Chinese traditional medicine. Therefore, it can be said that he was in the very special position in the Chinese traditional medicine.

  • It is the well-known truth that processing of raw information is needed to a certain extent during information search. Especially for Oriental Medical information, it becomes much clearer that even more complex processing is necessary. As a means of reducing such complexity, this study suggests a way to understand effectively the organic relationships among information found on the interface. In this process, 'knowledge-based archaeological' method has been used. A new concept of interface observed by this research is the study of a system which contains realistically considered knowledge-based archaeological and historical specificity. These models are organized so that search results could be materialized in different tree-structured interface models, which can help one understand the relationships among wanted search results at one glance and confirm the details of those results via mouse click. Strength of the vertical tree structure resides in its capability of suggesting its users clear historical relationship between separate Oriental medical information. The horizontal tree structure enables deeper understanding of sectional interrelationship of searched information. The strength of the prescription tree structure is that it helps one understand the lineage of prescriptions, as Oriental medicinal treatment is often summarized into changes in prescriptions.
