When a Japanese learner in Korea tries to find Japanese dictionary, he must know the pronunciation of the target word. But it's not easy to know the pronunciation of target word from Japanese sentence. Because most of general Japanese sentence shows only HanJa(Chinese character) instead of Kana(Japanese alphabet). If the Japanese learner knows the Korean traditional pronunciation of the target word, he can input the word to electronic Japanese dictionary with the Korean pronunciation. For this solution, the dictionary service provider must convert the Japanese word to Korean pronunciation, in advance. After setting of the conversions as a additional searching process, we can find the target word through Korean pronunciation of the Japanese HanJa, This process is possible for the three reasons below, 1. Korean, Japanese and Chinese are using the nearly same HanJa. The difference is small. 2. Most Japanese learner in Korea, knows the Korean pronunciation of the HanJa. 3. The Korean pronunciation of the HanJa is nearly unique, a HanJa has a Korean pronunciation, generally.
Objectives : Many cancer patients use therapies promoted as literal alternative and complementary medicine to conventional medical care. So the health provider has to guide it by appropriate clinical guideline. The purpose is to indicate the international research tool of korean medical oncology for related investigators and help to make the clinical guideline for korean oncology. Method : We reviewed complementary and alternative therapies for cancer and cancer-related symptoms by searching MEDLINE, and using the name and synonyms of the therapy. Publications on complementary medicine were identified by searching the Cochrane Library. Results and Conclusion : Most complementary and alternative medicine used by cancer patients have demonstrable, important benefits, including decreased symptoms and better quality of life. We have to standardize the scientific research protocol for korean oncology and build evidence based medicine in the future.
Objectives: Many cancer patients have been using Korean medicine with conventional medical care. This study aimed to look into current status of Korean medicine in cancer patients in Korea. Methods: We reviewed utilization of Korean medicine for cancer by searching DB (KoreaMed, KMbase, KISS, NDSL, KISTI, National Assembly Library, OASIS, Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal). The first search keyword used was "cancer" and the second keyword used was either "oriental", "alternative" or "complementary". Results: The utilization rate of Korean medicine was 31.0%. In terms of patient's disease characteristics, most of them were suffering from stomach cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. Most of them were diagnosed as fourth stage of cancer. Ginseng (14.8%) was a favorite Korean medicine, followed by medicinal treatment (8.1%), acupuncture (3.1%), moxibustion (3.0%), and cupping (2.1%). Conclusions: In Korea, one third of cancer patients are using Korean medicine. We need to know the expectations and demand for Korean medicine for treating cancer and establish our strategy to attract public attention.
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of traditional herbal medicine (THM) in the treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) versus conventional western medicine. Methods: Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) comparing THM vs. conventional western medicine for DUB, were obtained from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, RISS, NDSL, KISS and OASIS. The risk of bias was assessed by using Cochrane's risk of bias tool. Results: 16 RCTs with 1,659 patients were identified and reviewed. 10 RCTs reported THM was statistically effective than control group in effective rate. Also recurrent rate was estimated in 6 RCTs and was lower than control group. 7 studies observed adverse events (AEs) and severe AEs were not reported. Conclusions: Despite several limitations, this review suggested that THM was safe and effective in the treatment of DUB. THM may also decrease the recurrence rate. However, this could not be proven conclusively. To ensure evidence-based clinical practice, more sternly designed trials are warranted.
Traditional Korean medicines may be managed more scientifically, through the development of logical criterion to verify their cultivation region. It contributes to advance the industry of traditional herbal medicines. Volatile compounds were obtained from 14 samples of domestic Taeksa and 30 samples of Chinese Taeksa by steam distillation. The metabolites were identified by NIST mass spectral library in the obtained gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) data of 35 training samples. The multivariate statistical analysis, such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA), and Orthogonal Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), were performed based on the qualitative and quantitative data. Finally trans-(2,3-diphenylcyclopropyl)methyl phenyl sulfoxide (47.265 min), 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-phenyl-naphthalene (47.781 min), spiro[4-oxatricyclo[5.3.0.0.(2,6)]decan-3-one-5,2'-cyclohexane] (54.62 min), 6-[7-nitrobenzofurazan-4-yl]amino-morphinan-4,5-epoxy (54.86 min), p-hydroxynorephedrine (55.14 min) were determined as marker metabolites to verify candidates for the origin of Taeksa. The statistical model was well established to determine the origin of Taeksa. The cultivation areas of test samples, each 3 domestic and 6 Chinese Taeksa were predicted by the established OPLS-DA model and it was confirmed that all 9 samples were precisely classified.

Objectives The incidence of degenerative diseases is increasing as society ages, and this increased the economic burden on society. Oxidative stress was also under suspicion as one of the causes. Recent studies have found that Curcuma longa Rhizoma had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and anticancer effects. Through this study, we figure out trends in Curcuma longa Rhizoma research and evaluate the therapeutic potential of Curcuma longa Rhizoma for dementia. Methods The search was made using domestic and international internet search sites. "Naver academic," "Google scholar," "Korea institute of oriental medicine (KIOM OASIS)," "Korean traditional knowledge portal (KTKP)," "Library of Congress," "Research information sharing service (RISS)," "National Digital Science Links (NDSL)," and "Pub med" are used to search. The searched for words were "turmeric," "Curcuma longa Rhizoma," "antioxidant," and "nerve regeneration." Results It could be seen that a lot of research done on Curcuma longa recently. In previous studies, the most common research disease was cancer. In previous studies, the most common effects of Curcuma longa was antioxidant and anticancer. Curcumin, Vitamin B1, and various essential oils were the functional components of Curcuma longa Rhizoma. Curcuma longa Rhizoma performs DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical cation decolorization activity; it inhibits NO and iNOS. Conclusion The destruction of nerve cells due to oxidative stress is a cause of dementia. Curcuma longa Rhizoma have antioxidant effects. Therefore, we believed that it is an effective treatment for dementia. Various studies will be made on Curcuma longa Rhizoma.

When information professionals deal with other disciplines in the course of digital humanities projects, they often assume that they are dealing with 'needful users' who have an 'information gap' to fill. This paper argues that the traditional view that information/knowledge is transferred from an information specialist donor to a domain specialist receiver is no longer appropriate in the digital humanities context, where the gap-and-search (or gap-and-filler) approach to information has given way to more direct, explorative engagement with information. The paper asks whether information science and the practising profession are ready for this paradigm shift and examines information science conservatism in two common collaboration scenarios, library support and digital development. It is shown that information science theory still assumes a traditional donor role in both scenarios. How information scientists deal with conservatism in practice is discussed in the example of the Prior project, in which the information science team exerted an ambiguous, hybrid approach with both conservative and non-conservative elements. Finally, two rather hypothetical answers are offered to the question of how information professionals should approach scholarly collaboration in the digital humanities context, where users have ceased to be supplicants. From a purely pragmatic perspective, information scientists need to shift their focus from information needs to research practices and the implications of these practices for digital information systems. More fundamentally, the emergence of digital humanities challenges information professionals to transform information systems designed for searching into digital objects that can be explored more freely by the digital humanities community.

The purpose of this study was to prepare basic data for improving school library information service by investigating the information usage behavior of specialized high school students. Preferred information sources for each situation requiring information and the level of solving information problems using information sources were investigated, and difference analysis was conducted by department and grade. As a result of the survey, the percentage of students who preferred Internet portal services, personal information sources (teachers, friends, parents), and social media was high, while the percentage of students who preferred traditional print information sources and mass media was very low. The average score of the information problem solving level was 3.55, and the problem solving level in the areas of employment and career/admission was relatively low. Preferred sources of information were similar regardless of grade and department, and the difference between departments in information problem solving level was not statistically significant, but the difference between grades was statistically significant. In addition, there is an academic contribution in this field that specific examples of youth information use behavior have been added. Based on the results of the study, librarians should make efforts to verify the reliability of Internet portal site information, improve and promote library information sources, and expand library use education. In future studies, it was suggested to develop customized information services.
Background : Integrative cancer treatment is a holistic approach embracing body, mind, and spirit incorporating conventional treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and personalized complementary treatments. Wheel Balance Therapy (WBT) of East-West Cancer Center(EWCC), Dunsan Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University was developed to balance out all factors involved in cancer care based on the traditional theories of oriental medicine. Objective : This work aims to analytically review literatures on WBT and its related components. Methods : Literatures published from January 1st, 1990 to April 30th, 2011 were reviewed focusing on 4 main components of WBT; herbal medicine, immune activation, anti-cancer diet, and breathing/meditation. Data were retrieved from medical search engines and electronic data bases including Pubmed, Research Information sharing Service (RISS), Korean-studies Information Service System (KISS), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Korea's National Digital Library (KNDL). Results : In this review, EWCC's most commonly prescribed formulas are explored. The composition of the formulas, their use in clinical settings as well as the background studies and other therapeutic efficacies are explained. Information on incorporating anti-cancer dietary support and breathing and meditation techniques, other therapies practiced as part of the center's integrative cancer care are also covered. Conclusion : WBT based on holistic theories of oriental medicine embracing body, mind, and spirit is expected to further contribute in promotion of cancer patients' quality of life and prolonged survival time.
Objectives : This study was to propose how to translate journal references into english for enhancing citation index of the journals published in the Korean Oriental Medical Society. Methods : Journal reference is mainly composed of author name, title or book name, journal name such as Index Medicus or publisher name, etc. In order to find the appropriate equivalents to the above major constituents, head words extracted from all the references of Journal of Korean Oriental Medical Society published in 2002 to 2009. A plan for English translation of the journal reference was formulated and the glossary was prepared. Plan for English translation of the journal reference : 1. Author: Author name was represented as capitalized last name and two initials of first name and listed up to six. If there are more, the first three or six authors were listed with 'et al'. 2. Terminology of traditional Korean medicine: Standard korean traditional medical terminology was one of the current representative dictionary with as much as 6040 headwords, which was needed to be translated into English in order to provide substantial equivalents available for English translation of journal reference. Therefor 4361 english equivalents were to be newly adopted except for 1679 overlapped with them in WHO-IST. Source oriented translation and target oriented translation were allowed to be appropriately selected depending on the condition. In addition, principle of English translation of acupoint, medicinal Herbs, Herbal formula and classical works were proposed. 3. Basically the names of journals should be set in italics and abbreviated according to the List of journals indexed for medline (formerly Index Medicus) published by the National Library of Medicine. however, abbreviation of korean oriental medical journals were not yet established. Thus establishment of tentative korean index medicus should be considered. Conclusions : For the enhancement of journal citation index of korean traditional medical journals, it was suggested that english translation of journal reference should be one of the alternatives enhancing citation rate.
